Using digitized bitmapped graphics, this is the updated version that goes beyond just the basic rock blasting.,. (thanks to Lucasfilm for the state of the art graphics). Of course atari has had many updates and upgrades since this game has come out, including the free asteroids online. 2 basic game ~~~~~~~~~~- You are a spaceship, you will travel through various areas of space destroying rocks mostly, but also spaceships, space turtles, and other craft that try to destroy you. Your challenges get harder and harder, as you progress. but you also have a lot more firepower, extra shields, double firepower, crystal magnets etc. You do have a time limit, which is your fuel/energy. which you have to monitor. NOTE: you need to make them come to a complete stop, or the level will NOT BE COMPLETED! On the second hit, the seeker asteroid will stop moving. NOTE : there are red seeker crystal which act the same, however when destroyed, they leave an energy crystal 500 points ~~~~~~~~~ other ~~~~- eggs - contains leeches that will attach to your spaceship, and drain energy from you.. you can speed up to loosen them from your ship Each egg contains 6 leeches. ~~~ crystals - when you blow up the smallest red asteroid, it will turn into an energy crystal that will give you an increase in energy. if you are maxed out, it only gives you points these move in a slow fashion ~~ 250-2250 points starts off at maximum and decreases with time ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ super crystal - these are purple crystals that move in a very fast manner. you cannot just pick them up directly, it's best to have the speeder, and then try to intercept it's path...is not impacted by the crystal magnet. If you approach them directly, they will be slightly repelled. turn into the speeder, and let the super crystal move in lines, adjust your direction and speed, and when it is near, thrust and you should be able to pick it up. One method that works pretty well, is to move vertically near the very edge of the screen. points - 10000 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 6 enemies ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NOTE : I alternate between calling the enemies by their official name, and my nicknames which are more descriptive and easier to recognize. All enemies can collide with you causing energy loss (unless you have shields) There is also a shift in momentum and inertia, depending on how fast you are moving, and how fast they are moving. if you are moving faster, you will shift momentum to them. if they are faster than you, or if you are not moving, you will be bumped by them hitting you. Also, they can break down asteroids, and sometimes fire shots at them. Turtles, ufo's, thief, and bombers are all permanent, and will not leave until destroyed or the level ends. It makes a loud airplane sound when onscreen points 4000 ~~~~~~~~~~~ bandit ~~~~~~~ This purple ship will come out, and steal any powerups on the screen, however if you kill it first, you can recover the powerup. if it steals more than one, you can only recover the last one. points 10000 ~~~~~~~~~~~~ dervish ~~~~~~~ Satellite dish - these can be hit from all sides, the dish acts as a shield and you can't damage as much that way. they rotate and spin constantly to make them more difficult to destroy. If they flash when hit, then they are taking damage points 4000 ~~~~~~~~~~~~ reboz ~~~~- Space turtles - these will steal you energy crystals so destroy them quickly. they move quickly and reverse to avoid fire. note : they can also steal SUPER crystals! At times they can help you, by destroying the smallest asteroids. however, they do try to ram you also. so avoid them. Also they can be destroyed if they take enough damage hitting rocks points 3000 ~~~~~~~~~~~ bomber ~~~~~~ These blue spaceships are fast and EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, they will shoot bombs at you that cause massive damage.. kill them or lead them away. They can still hit you when you are warping away from a sector! so kill them when they are on screen. points 5000 ~~~~~~~~~~~ leeches ~~~~~~~- Suck energy from your ship 500 points ~~~~~~~~~~ mukor ~~~~- Large green boss mini ships - 500 points blobs - 2000 points tubes - 7500 points Note, the mini enemies cause MASSIVE damage, as they swarm and bump and shoot at you.. shoot the mukor tubes and keep moving, and STAY AWAY from all the swarms and blobs. use ripstars if you have them. Also, DO NOT BUMP INTO THE MUKOR, as you might lose energy. 7 powerups ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Powerups are the key to the game. You will need to know when to use them, and how to get them..ideally you will choose the best levels to get them on. Powerups stack, and you can have multiples of some of them. Some are time limited, others are shot limited. In order to get a powerup, an enemy ship will come out on some levels, shoot several shots at it, and it will transform. these are NOT random. and remain constant from game to game, and level to level Beware turtles that will eat energy crystals. (except for popcorn asteroids) This is limited to a certain amount of shots, but stacks with double firepower ~~~~~~~ Blasters - this is a double turret you gain double shot power, which affects super shots also. (for advanced levels, you need to hit the seeker and popcorn asteroids first) ~~~~~~~~~~~ due to the slow speed of turning, transform your ship to fighter or speeder, turn, and then transform more to change back to the large warrior NEXT - transform to the fighter ship, and fire as quickly as possible knocking out the rest of the rocks. including seekers and popcorns.. this will give you best balance of firepower, turning, and armor finally, when only a few items are left, transform into the speeder ship, and zip around with the thrust and fire. dive closely after the smallest rocks, but DON'T HIT THEM...since your range is small, fire quickly when warping through levels ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ you gain a slight amount of energy for finishing a level the first time.. if you revisit a sector, YOU DO NOT GAIN ANY ENERGY.. so warp quickly and you won't lose any energy either.. you will eventually lose some energy so you can't keep going back and forth either. gravitational pull of stations/warps ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ one thing to note, is that when you complete a level, or a level with a warp shows up. it has an area slightly larger than itself, that will exert a gravitational pull on your ship, and bring you into it. be careful if you are near it, and don't want to exit or are getting powerups nearby. wait or don't wait for bonuses? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ on some levels you are GUARENTEED powerups, memorize which levels have what, and that way you will be able to judge whether you should stay on a level or not hit rocks early or not? 11min:07sec score - 2777830 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 15 (advanced gameplay strategy 2) time is your enemy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ the energy bar should be viewed as a timer... you are CONSTANTLY losing energy.. there are a few times, if you warp quickly enough, you won't lose any.. also, you gain back a small fraction for every sector you complete THE FIRST TIME... the harder the levels, the quicker the energy bar goes down. you should be aware of it, but don't fixate too much on it, or you will lose focus of playing. try getting through levels quickly, but get all the powerups that you can safely. don't waste time chasing down enemies, if you memorize which ones are worth it, it will save you time in the end. try to get the main powers, the rest of the enemies will just add to your points. once you get good enough, you can go for points. but initially, you should be trying to survive through the boards, and clear as many as possible. there are a lot to go through, and if you can figure out the best paths that are detailed above as guidelines and below. you will be well on your way to mastering the game. momentum and inertia ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ each ship handles differently. different thrust, different turn rates, etc. the better you know how to control each ship precisely, the more you can assess each threat and deal with it. when you get hit by an object, depending on your shield count, this happens: ~~ shield 0 - no shields, if you are travelling at a certain speed, you will transfer momentum to other ships, sluggos, etc will then travel faster when you hit them, and you lose energy, a lot of it! shield > 1 - each hit you hit take will subtract one from the shield count, the best part is NO momentum or inertia is lost if YOU ARE STAYING STILL. if you are moving, you will maintain angle and velocity in the direction and speed you are currently going. you have the freedom to rotate at any time you are active. of course your turn rate depends on how quickly you can spin the dial controller. ship transforms ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ultimately, you will be doing this a lot.. become warrior (largest) - shoot most of the largest rocks... and then alternate between fighter, to shoot the fastest, or speeder and turn... then cycle through them.. counting shots or not ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ i don't count mine.. but you really need to be careful with every special shot you get.. if you have double shots, use them wisely, also special power shots.. i know i tend to spray them, but if you are careful, you can make them last a long time egg strategy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ for levels with eggs, try not to shoot them until the very end of the level. that way you do not have to deal with the leeches which suck energy from you. if you have to shoot the eggs, use the warrior (largest) to shoot them, so it will kill some of the leeches. once the level is cleared of other enemies, and you shoot the eggs, you should be able to finish the sector without having to kill off the leeches. using popcorns as defense ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ if you're on a level with these, try to use them defensively. they will block enemies shots, and also force enemy ships and asteroids to bounce off or find their way around them. use this to your advantage, and you can move out of the way of shots, or turn on enemy ships, and shoot them first. crystals, and powerups, and your shots CAN GO THROUGH them. priority ~~~~~~~~ it all depends on whats on a level usually it would go like this: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ seekers popcorn large gray large red medium gray small gray small red eggs leeches it's hard to selectively shoot those, so you have to be careful with your shots. if you have special shots, or special double shots, use them, it will take out most of the enemies quickly as far as the ships go- ~~ bomber - and shots bumper dervish - because their shots seem to track you reboz - because they eat energy bandit sluggo of course, you need to shoot whatever comes out, and get the powerups quickly, but you have to gauge your energy, how direct the threat of these ships are. crystals ~~ if you can, leave the small red rocks with energy (or red seeker) until the end. especially if you have a lot of energy. if you overfill the bar, it is NOT extra. the super crystal of course, since it fills you to maximum, can be delayed. but don't get too low, or you risk dying. there are some levels with more than one. memorize which sectors have these, and if you are running low, try to get them quickly. of course, sometimes, its on the very last sector you finish before the mukor. so you don't really need, unless you want the points. point pressing bandits ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ at the end of the harder levels, like expert. if you leave a powerup floating around, a bandit will come out and try to get it. you can kill the bandit, and another will come out. you can do this 3 times before they stop. utilizing powerups ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ in order to be most effective, know how to use the powerups effeciently for shot power - use warrior (largest) to do the most damage. if you need speed shots, use fighter. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ double shots-limited, but powerful, well double the amount of damage you can inflict, and clear out boards quickly special shots- will instantly make popcorns big, take out seekers, and change large to small rocks. anything smaller will be destroyed, or turn into energy. will kill enemy ships as warrior quickly. ship powers ~~~ crystal magnet - lasts for a few levels, but you must learn to control the ship so that you don't end up flinging or chasing the energy away due to gravitional effects turbo booster - helpful when running away from enemy ships shields - will help you when you get hit, so you don't lose energy until they get to 0. the more you get, the more hits you can take. will take out leeches, 1 per hit. cloak - will make sure harder to locate from enemy ships, and leeches. Continuation shows the number of times players continued their games. 0 Mins shows the number of minutes of idle time. 1 Mins shows the number of minutes played as a one-person game. 2 Mins shows the number of minutes played as a two-person game. Red Mins shows the number of minutes played on the red side. Green Mins shows the number of minutes played on the green side. Sessions shows the total number of sessions. One session is the time between the first player starting and both players dying, regardless of time, number of coins inserted, or how many people have played Blasteroids. Error Count shows the number of EEROM errors that were detected. Replace the EEROM at location 2A/B on the Game PCB if the errors detected exceed more than 75 per week. Total Coins shows the total number of coins deposited in both coin mechanisms. Avg Time/Coin shows the average game time per coin, in seconds. Histograms ~~~~~~~~~~~ The seven histogram screens show the length of the games for both players in bar graph form. To move through the histogram screens, press the red Fire button. The histogram information accumulates from the first time the game was turned on or from the last time the histograms were cleared. To clear the histograms, simultaneously press the red Thrust and Transform buttons. The first three histogram screens show the new game time in seconds for the easy, medium, and hard level selection. (The hard and expert player-selected levels are displayed together on the hard level screens in the game time and continuation time histograms.) The next three screens show continuation time in seconds for the easy, medium, and hard level selections. The final screen shows session length in minutes. Self-Test Playfield Test ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It tests the condition of the playfield circuit. If you see errors, check the circuitry and the ROMs at 1L and 1M on the Blasteroids PCB. (If your game has EPROMs instead of ROMs, check the EPROMs at 1L, 3L, 1M, and 5M on the Blasteroids PCB.) If you want to look at all the playfields, turn off the Self-Test switch while you are in the Self-Test Playfield screen. Next, press either the red Transform or Thrust button to advance through all the playtields. You can also see all the playfield screens as the game cycles through the Attract mode. If a screen is incorrect, this could indicate a failure in the playfield circuitry. Press the red Fire button to go to the next screen. Playfield Test Motion Object Test ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Motion Object Test indicates the condition of the motion-object buffer circuit. Hold down the green Thrust button and turn the green knob to see all the objects used in the game. To rotate an object, release the green Thrust button and turn the green knob. In the upper left comer of the screen are three lines of text. The First gives the number and short name of the object. The second gives the rotation view number and the name also. The last line gives the horizontal object size. Check to be sure all of the objects in the game are shown in the test. If an object is missing, you have a ROM error. Press the red Fire button to move to the next screen. NOTE If you cannot enter the sound self-test, the cause may be a harness disconnection between the Audio and Game PCBs. Color Test ~~~~~~~~~~ This test indicates the condition of the display color circuits. The screen should show 16 vertical grey-scale bars and three blocks of red, green, and blue, each containing 16 vertical bars. The brightest bars should be on the red and darkest (black) on the right with a grey frame around the screen. This frame helps to identify the darkest color band. If the display characteristics are not correct, refer to the display manual for the color-gun adjustment procedure or to determine the possible cause of failure. If this error is displayed when entering the test, then the sound processor cannot run further. Press the red Fire button to obtain the next test. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Communications Error #1 Counts the number of errors caused by either the Audio PCB or Game PCB. Communications Error #2 Indicates a probable disconnection of the Audio PCB from the Game PCB, or the chip at 1M is not inserted into its socket. The darkest column (not black) with the red, green, and blue colors. This Column should be just barely visible. Press the red Fire button to move to the next screen. Color Purity Test ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Color Purity Test consists of five color displays that indicate the condition of the display color-purity circuits. The first display is a red screen with the word Red at the top of the screen. Press the red Thrust button, and the next display is green with the word Green at the top of the screen. Press the red Thrust button to obtain a blue, white, and finally a grey screen. After the grey screen, the display will repeat the red, green, blue, white, and grey sequence again, If the display characteristics are not correct, refer to the video display manual for the color-purity adjust­ment procedure or the possible cause of failure. Press the red Fire button to move to the next screen. Convergence Test ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This test indicates the condition of the display size, centering, linearity, and convergence. The grid pattern should be white. Press the red Thrust button and the grid pattern turns violet. Pressing the red Thrust button again causes the grid pattern to turn green. Check the grid pattern for the following characteristics: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The four corners of the frame around the grid pattern should touch all four corners of the screen. Grid lines should show little pincushioning or barreling, and the lines should be straight within 1.2 mm White pattern convergence should be within 1.5 mm. If the display characteristics are not within these limits, refer to the display manual for the linearity and convergence adjustment procedures or to determine the possible cause of failure, Use the violet and white patterns to adjust the display convergence. Press the red Fire button to move to the next screen. Sound Test ~~~~~~~~~~ This test indicates the condition of the coin mechanisms and the music, speech, and sound-effects circuits. The game may take up to three seconds to produce the first sound because the sound microprocessor is reset at the beginning of this test. If the sound-microprocessor resets correctly, check the coin mechanisms and the sound microprocessor circuits as described below. If the sound microprocessor reset fails, the message SOUND PROCESSOR NOT RESPONDING should blink near the top of the screen. The sound test screen shows the following messages; CURRENT COIN VALUE consists of four zeros, When you hold down the left coin switch mechanism, the third 0 changes to 1 and changes back to 0 when you release it, When you hold down the right coin switch mechanism, the fourth 0 changes to 1, then changes back to O when you release it, NUMBER OF SOUNDS indicates of the number of sounds used in the Blasteroids game. SOUND CPU STATUS indicates the condition of the sound microprocessor. If the sound microprocessor is good, the word Good appears. If the sound microprocessor or associated circuitry is faulty, a number will appear (to indicate sound status) in addition to an error message located at the top of the screen. SOUND #indicates the number of the sound. Choose a sound by turning the red knob. To hear the sound, press the red Thrust button one or more times. Press the red Transform button to silence the sound. You can also select the following integrated circuit (chip) tests during the Sound Test: Sound 4 (Music Chip Test) consists of eight tones in a major scale that alternate between sound channels (16 tones in all).
