Repainting the house

Thought for sure I'd be back into the 2600 by now, but been too busy with other things like household maintenance.

Started off by sanding the garage door to get rid of a small amount of rust. Primed the previously rusty areas with Rust-oleum, then put an additional primer coat of Killz over the entire door as the paint had faded in an odd way (the top-right panel was noticeably darker than the rest of the door). Mom & dad helped replace the board on the left that had started to rot at the bottom:

They also helped replace the split boards around all the windows on the backside of the house. The afternoon Texas Sun is extremely harsh on that part of the house - you can see how much the paint has faded were the water hose box used to be (also contrast it to the front of the house, which gets hit by the morning sun). Some of the darker areas are the result of my power washing the house as part of my preparation for the repainting.

Still have one board to replace - the sun didn't damage it, but the board split lengthwise while we were removing the old vertical boards. My neighbor helped me pick up the new board yesterday after work as the 12 foot board wouldn't fit in my folks' car (and there was no chance of it fitting in my S2000!)

Decided it was a good time to replace the front and back doors and have them on order - they should arrive in another week or so. With new entry doors come new door knobs. I'd been having issues with some of the door knobs int the house "snagging" when they were turned, so I opted to replace all of them throughout the entire house.

Old door knobs:

New door levers:

Dad suggested the levers as they're easier to open with his arthritis (which I suspect I'm starting to develop :(). Still have about half the door knobs to replace - but those doors need their paint touched up first and I'm not going to worry about that until after I've finished repainting the outside.

Yeah - real life has a habit of getting in the way of hobbies. I haven't touched much of anything Atari-related in months. Finally getting around to wrapping up a long-dormant project though... :ponder:

Oh, we won't. We still deal with analog at work all the time, due to all of the old archive tapes we have. We're in the process of digitizing those too, but that's going to take much, much longer.

Fortunately, a lot of high-end analog equipment is showing up on eBay now as broadcast companies move to digital, so we can pick up gear we never could have afforded when it was new. There are still a few places in the L.A. area that can repair this stuff too. Getting parts for it is becoming difficult though now, so we can't do this forever. Plus some of our oldest tapes are deteriorating, so those have to be sent out to be dealt with by preservationists. The Stella tapes are all in excellent condition though.

Nice!

My new doors are getting installed right now.

Mom and dad came up this morning and finished prepping all the boards around the windows while I was working. On my lunch break I helped install the 12 foot board. I've been spending evenings up on a ladder painting the eaves of the house. Mom & dad plan to be up again on Saturday to help finish painting the sides and back of the house as well as the new doors and the garage door. That should go fairly quickly as we'll be able to use the paint sprayer for most of that.

I worked for a house painting company one summer, doing prep work. Hardest (physically) that I've ever worked in my life. I did sanding, scraping, taping, then the paint guy would come along with the sprayer and whoosh! Done. Then I did clean-up. Never got to use the sprayer.

Yeah, it's definitely a difficult task. Ended up taking a break last night, by the time they finished installing the doors it wasn't worth dragging everything out for the 15 minutes or so of time I'd have before the sun went down.
