fire TV

My fire TV arrived today, it's quite small:

I don't have a new TV yet, and my old TV won't support it, so I have it plugged into one of my 4K monitors. 4K content looks awesome on it, as though I were looking out a window:

I've resubscribed to HBO NOW and had an unexpected surprise - another 30 day free trial :D :

I did have a minor issue though, after subscribing I could watch on the fire TV, but not via my iPad or browser on the computers. I contacted HBO and they told me I should have received an "Action Required: Complete Your Registration" email, but it'd been a few hours and hadn't shown up. Tried signing out and back in but no luck. They then had me uninstall/reinstall the app on the fire TV, and about 15 minutes after that the email showed up so I'm good to go - time to catch up on Westworld :D

I knew some of the Amazon series were in 4K, so went to watch Red Oaks (I highly recommend checking it out if you haven't seen it) again and it was still just HD:

After some research it turns out there's a separate area for 4K content:

Where you can find the UHD badged version of the show - it looks really good:

One minor issue to resolve - the fire TV only sends audio via HDMI which my monitor can handle, though it doesn't have built in speakers. I dug out some old ones, but they're not amplified so are difficult to hear (especially if the treadmill is going):

Since desk space is at a premium, I've ordered the sound bar for my monitor. Should be here this weekend.

I've also checked out some 4K videos via YouTube - they look quite good as well. Last time I checked out 4K YouTube videos on the computer I had to deal with a lot of buffering. My cable modem's been upgraded since then, but I hadn't thought to recheck YouTube until now - no longer any buffering issues on the computer.

Addendum - speaker bar and volume knob:

Sound bar arrived.

I attached it to the monitor, plugged USB cable into monitor and the power light by the volume knob came on.

Connected the audio-out from the monitor to the aux-in on the sound bar, started playing a YouTube video on the fire TV - no sound.

Dug out a USB cable and connected the monitor's USB hub to the Mac. Loud sounds erupted forth. Turned the volume knob, the Mac's system volume lowered, but the sound from the fire TV stayed at the same level.

Unplugged the monitor's USB cable from the Mac, fire TV sound still comes out the speaker bar. Volume knob still does not control the volume. Looks like I'll have to get something like this Headphone/Speaker Volume Adjuster.

If I power cycle the monitor the sound bar stops working unless I plug the monitor's USB cable back into the Mac.

Dell.

For what it's worth - I have a pair of these, which are excellent speakers. Lay them on their sides and they're pretty unobtrusive. The volume control is very handy - it has a headphone jack and aux-in built into it.

Yeah, not sure what they were thinking there. If you're using it for a computer it would be just fine, but not so much when you're using them to turn the monitor into a TV.

Nice! The soundbar was a tenth the price, though that volume control I ordered will make it a fifth.

Just watched the first episode of Orphan Black in 4K. Intriguing show, awesome picture.
