Stella at 20-something

Well, if you've been following along with this thread in the 2600 forums, then you already know that a DVD release of the 2-part documentary "Stella at 20" is in the works.   Shot in 1997 and released on VHS, this documentary featured interviews with many of the Atari 2600's designers and programmers, as well as Atari's founders: Nolan Bushnell and Al Alcorn. (See complete descriptions of "Stella at 20" at the CyberPunks home page.)   Volume 2 has long been sold-out, although Volume 1 is sti

Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Spoiler-free review

I got out to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi a couple of nights ago. But before we get to the review… two things: 1) Remember my rant a few years ago about how awful movie theaters are? And later how I found movie theaters that corrected those problems? Well, to see any movie now, much less a Star Wars film, I'm really particular about where I see it. Since I'm in Seattle at the moment, I'd hoped to go to the Cinerama again, where I saw Star Wars: The Force Awakens. However, we found an alternati

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Spoiler-free movie review

Let's start at the beginning. When I first saw Star Wars in 1977, it was at the UA 150 theater in downtown Seattle. I was too young to drive, so my parents had to take me down there, a 20 mile round trip, to see the movie. Somehow, over the course of the next year or so, I managed to convince them to do that another 10 or 11 times as I saw the movie again and again. It's pretty astonishing now to think of any movie sticking around in first-run theaters for over a year, but Star Wars did it. Th

Star Wars in HD

So yesterday finally brought the long-awaited return of Star Wars... in HD!       Yep, that's right! Season 4 of The Clone Wars debuted on Cartoon Network!     What?     You were expecting a write-up on some other "Star Wars in HD" event that took place Friday?   I can't imagine what that would be...   Anyway, season 4 started off with a two-parter, Water War and Gungan Attack. In the first episode, there was a war under water, and in the second one... well, I don't want to spoil

Star Wars Episode VII: (Insert subtitle here)

So... it's been confirmed that J.J. Abrams will be directing the next Star Wars film.   The director of the new Star Trek films, will be directing the new Star Wars films.   Two nerd-worlds collide. I wonder if the internet will survive?   "It was as if millions of nerds suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened."   Now, I didn't think Star Trek was all that bad when I saw it the first time. Preposterous, yes. Ridiculous, yes. Utterl

Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker - Spoiler-free review

Ten pounds of Bantha poodoo in a five pound bag.   Okay, that's not quite the adage, but you get the idea.   Anyway, now you don't have to read the rest of the review! You're welcome!     But in case you're still here...   When I first heard JJ Abrams would be directing Star Wars: Episode IX, I cringed. JJ Abrams is a lazy writer who substitutes hare-brained McGuffins for coherent plots and character development, and who has a complete disregard and profou

Star Trek Into Darkness - Spoiler-free Review

To recap the first film:   http://youtu.be/OTfBH-XFdSc   Okay, so with that out of the way, yet again I find myself sitting in a theater, waiting for a movie to start. In this case Star Trek Into Darkness, which I guess is supposed to be read as a sentence. So we're trekking, into darkness. Or something. Anyway, since I effectively "trekked" to the theater, and am sitting in relative darkness, the title seems somewhat apropos.   Unlike Iron Man 3, where we were hustled into the theater mer

Star Trek 3... and beyond

Since the Star Trek reboot seems intent on recycling old story elements for their films, I thought I'd help them out with a plot summary for the next one.   Okay… it starts out with a group of space hippies who steal Spock's brain.   Their society (which is based on ancient Rome) is under the control of an intelligent supercomputer named Landru (who talks like a 1930's gangster), and they need Spock's brain to build a weapon to defeat their enemies (space Nazis) on a neighboring planet. Spit into the Wind! - revisited

I've been playing Incoming! lately, and it's brought back to mind one of my Stupid Game Ideas!™, namely Spit into the Wind! - which is basically Artillery, with Cheetos.   One of the things I didn't have in the original mock-ups, was a feature I mentioned that I really liked from Artillery, which is that it would leave a trail behind when it fired a shot, so you could see the trajectory.   I figured it probably couldn't be done on the 2600, but then as I was thinking about the game again rec

Spit into the Wind!

After reading Mezrabad's review of Human Cannonball, and the subsequent comments about the classic game Artillery, I remembered a graphical hack I did of Kirk Crawford's version of Artillery for the Mac.   I created this back around 1990. Re-titled "Spit into the wind", it featured two caricatures of my college profs hocking loogies at each other. So I thought, "Hey! This is another (fanfare please)... Stupid Game Idea!" It would be a natural for the 2600. While there's already an Artillery-ty

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse - Spoiler-free review

When I first heard Sony was making an animated Spider-Man film, my first thought was, "Ugh. Really? Have they learned nothing from their past failures with Spider-Man? Why can't they just leave creative control of the character to Marvel, and take whatever money Marvel gives them?" Then, when I heard it would feature the Miles Morales version of the character (from the Ultimate Universe), I was even less interested. Even though I knew people really liked that character, I had stopped reading c

Spider-Man: Homecoming - Spoiler-free review

I finally got around to seeing Spider-Man: Homecoming a few days ago. I was debating whether or not to go see it because frankly, I'm a little tired of Spider-Man movies. Even though some of them had their moments, and Spider-Man himself was handled pretty well, it was Peter Parker who just never really clicked. For one thing, he was always way too old, and for another, he just wasn't very likable. Tobey Maguire played him like kind of an endlessly crying jerk, and Andrew Garfield was a tortured

Spider-Man: Far From Home - Spoiler-free review

I saw Spider-Man: Far From Home a couple of weeks ago while on vacation, but since I was on vacation, I didn't feel like typing up a review at the time. I had other, vacation-y things to do.     Also, while I think the forum changes at AtariAge have been a welcomed and much needed upgrade, I don't care for the changes in the blogs at all. In fact, I've all-but stopped visiting the blogs. The main page is a cluttered mess with banners that should be hidden unless you want to view them,

Spider-Man (The Amazing) - Mostly-spoiler-free review

So, here we go again. I'm killing time in a movie theater, waiting for a movie to start. However, there are only a couple of minutes to go, so I'm not going to get much typing done. I wasn't sure whether to go see The Amazing Spider-Man or not, since I can't say I was all that intrigued by the trailers. But I had a couple of hours to kill, and a free movie pass burning a hole in my pocket, so here I am. Well... time for the show.   (One movie and a late dinner at Chick-Fil-A later...)   (BT

Spending $50...

Or he could buy a Star Trek pizza cutter. And a pizza.   But for those (like me) who dug the first two installments of Carmageddon, here's a link to their Kickstarter page.   115 < PreviousIndexNext >

Nathan Strum in Comic Strips

Space Cadets (pt. 1)

I've been spending about the last week and a half going through my stuff.   You know the kind of stuff I'm talking about. Everybody has some of it.   Cardboard boxes, with stuff in them, jammed into the back of a closet or attic somewhere.   Stuff that you haven't looked at in years. Years and years. In some cases... decades.   (An aside: the fact that I'm measuring what I consider to be relatively recent events as having passed in "decades" bothers me.)   I didn't think I'd really acc

Somewhat less blingy

About a year-and-a-half ago, I posted about a couple of Lynx upgrades I bought - McWill's excellent replacement screen, and SainT's Micro SD multicart. When repairing my 2600 last year, I ordered a bunch of parts from Best Electronics - chips, joystick repair kits, and so on. Also, I added one of their Lynx replacement speakers. Now - my speaker actually worked, but for $12.50, I thought maybe the upgrade would be worth it. But it just sat in the box, waiting for me to get around to it. Since

Somebody at Disney likes video games...

First Tron: Legacy, now Wreck-It Ralph:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPSQOomMWro   I'd first heard of this years ago (it's been in development for ages under different titles) and was skeptical of it, but it looks pretty good. I've heard some good reports coming out of the studio about it as well (in fact - they have a number of arcade classics set up there for "research").   (Edit: replaced trailer with higher-quality version, without annoying introduction)

Solo: A Star Wars Story (that nobody asked for) - Spoiler-free review

When I first heard that they were making a Han Solo solo movie, my first thought was, "Why?" I already knew what I wanted to know about the character. I didn't care about unanswered questions from his past. Sometimes, a character is more interesting because you don't know everything about them. Take Darth Vader, for instance. He was a much more interesting character before the prequels revealed that he was an annoying, cherubic urchin, who grew up to be a spoiled, whining, obnoxious emo-brat.

So... what is Brave, anyway?

Watch this teaser trailer for Pixar's Brave...   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYg0VgPy6Uk   Then this trailer...   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEHWDA_6e3M   Then this extended scene...   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4EZULqhP2E   Sounds like typical Disney fare, right? Where you have a girl with hopes and dreams, but has to break free of society's conventions and expectations of her to find true freedom and happiness. And probably some dude to hook up with.   But then watch
