And yet still another small diversion

And my home video arcade grows! Last time, I added three new Tiny Arcade games: Galaga, Dig Dug and Frogger. This time, it's Q*bert and Tetris: In my first review of these, I mentioned Q*bert as a good candidate for becoming one of these Tiny Arcade games. I didn't think they'd make it though, because it requires the joystick to be turned 45°. Well, they actually did it - and it plays really well! Q*bert moves pretty quickly, and Ugg and Wrongway come out almost immediately in the second lev

A small diversion

I picked these up the other day: There are quite a few of these mini-arcade cabinets on the market. Different manufacturers make their own versions with various games being available. Some are available at Target and other stores, but I decided to pick up these particular ones from Amazon after seeing Ben Heck hack one of them into a multi-game keychain: There have been a number of reviews of them online, most of them being pretty favorable. To me they just looked... cool. I liked that

Ant-Man and The Wasp - Spoiler-free review

I really liked the first Ant-Man movie. I thought its light-humored approach and small scale (no pun intended) was a nice change from the overly-busy mess that was Avengers: Age of Ultron. And while I thought Avengers: Infinity War was excellent (in fact, it was the first movie in quite a few years I've seen more than once in the theater), it was kind of exhausting. I left the theater feeling like I'd just been out running. Admittedly, I could stand to exercise more... Ant-Man and The Wasp

X-Men: Apocalypse - Spoiler-free movie review

Well... I had completely lost any interest in seeing this movie after being completely underwhelmed by the trailers. But I was really bored yesterday evening, so I decided to go. I thought the last X-Men movie was good, and I'd finally rented Deadpool the other week, and thought that was pretty good, too. So maybe Fox was going to do okay with this movie. As an aside, how faithful Deadpool was to the comic, I couldn't tell you. He came along after I had stopped reading comics. His movie was en

New time, new station!

Another year has come and gone. And no, you didn't collapse into a coma and wake up seven months later (well... for all I know you didn't) - rather, another school year has come and gone.   And as usual, the annual screenings of our student films have been taking place (here's the obligatory link to last year's blog entry).   The Open Show, where we show all films from the Character Animation Program, took place in the Main Gallery at CalArts at the end of April. Here's a wacky fish-eye phot

Real Arcade Play: Achieved!

Yet another mouth to feed:     Huge thanks to Albert for hooking me up with this Vectrex! This is a pretty sweet unit - very clean, works great, solid controller, and it included several games and overlays (gotta have the overlays).   I've been wanting one of these since, well, since the early 80's when I first saw them in stores. More recently though (like, ten years ago) Alex Herbert sent me copies of a couple of his Vectrex homebrews as a thank-you for work I did on the manual and labe

iBlog 4

I really, really like my iPad Mini. In the year since I bought it, I've used it far more than I ever expected to. So much so, that my iPhone's use dropped way off. I almost never play games on my iPhone anymore (unless it's the only iDevice with me), and only surf the 'net with it if I don't have Wi-Fi access (or again, if the iPhone's all I have with me). Although the iPhone is a lot easier to hide under the table during meetings. Plus, the iPhone is still my main music player, especially at wo

Man of Steel - Spoiler-free review

Yep. Sitting in a theater again, waiting for a movie to start. But this is one I really have no expectations for, one way or the other. I'll admit I didn't have high hopes when I first heard they were rebooting the Superman movies, since after all - it's Superman. How much can you really do with it? Besides, DC's track record for movies is generally pretty bad. But some of the trailers looked pretty good. So in just a few minutes here, I guess I'll find out. The theater is mostly empty though, s

Stella at 20-something

Well, if you've been following along with this thread in the 2600 forums, then you already know that a DVD release of the 2-part documentary "Stella at 20" is in the works.   Shot in 1997 and released on VHS, this documentary featured interviews with many of the Atari 2600's designers and programmers, as well as Atari's founders: Nolan Bushnell and Al Alcorn. (See complete descriptions of "Stella at 20" at the CyberPunks home page.)   Volume 2 has long been sold-out, although Volume 1 is sti

Stripping

I was digging through some old files on my computer, and ran across a few comic strips I did while participating in Pitfall Harry's Contest of Doom. This was in May, 2003, about six months after I signed on at AtariAge.   These were done as parodies of Pitfall Harry's strip Crane's World. I named mine Carl Wonders, since it's an anagram of Crane's World, and the contest (a series of puzzles) included anagrams in it (among other things - it was a very tough contest).   Anyway,

100th Stupid Blog Entry!

Somehow, I've stuck with this whole "Blog" fad long enough to crank out 100 entries. And much to my surprise, just this past week, I passed Manuel's Blog as the "Most Viewed" at AtariAge:     So to all of the people who have been reading my blog, all I have to say is...   ...don't you have something better you could be doing??     Seriously though, thanks for reading. Hopefully some of it has been interesting, and maybe, occasionally, even useful.   Pffft! Ha! I knew I couldn't k

One hundred, ninety eight...

Well, who knew?   With all of the games I've been getting through AtariAge, plus a few used ones I was given by a friend of mine, my collection of Atari 2600 games has reached nearly 200 unique titles (from the 131 I originally had, back-in-the-day).   This is my 2600 Game List (36k PDF file - you'll need to zoom in to read it). It's sorted based on when I bought the games - as part of my original collection, or as a recent acquisition, with duplicates listed at the bottom.   Actually, I d

Straight Outta Newhall

So, I've been waiting for this CD for awhile...     Was it worth the wait?   Well - yes! Although I have to admit I was more than a little worried about it, since Weird Al's last album - Poodle Hat - was, I thought, his weakest effort to date. Maybe that's because the album before that - Running With Scissors - was (and still is) his best.   But this is a return to good form for Weird Al, and both his parodies and originals are excellent. I don't really keep up on current music anymore,

Space Cadets (pt. 1)

I've been spending about the last week and a half going through my stuff.   You know the kind of stuff I'm talking about. Everybody has some of it.   Cardboard boxes, with stuff in them, jammed into the back of a closet or attic somewhere.   Stuff that you haven't looked at in years. Years and years. In some cases... decades.   (An aside: the fact that I'm measuring what I consider to be relatively recent events as having passed in "decades" bothers me.)   I didn't think I'd really acc

WarGames

After years of searching, I finally found the WarGames soundtrack on CD.   While the soundtrack never did have an official, commercial release, a limited production run of promotional CDs was made, and I managed to locate one.   A complete review of it is now up on my website - MacMAME.net - in the Reviews section.   Enjoy!
