Whatever Rally Championship

For each of the past several years, I've posted a blog entry about the WRC (World Rally Championship). But the series has gotten so predictably boring over the last several years, there's little point to it. Someone named Sebastien wins most of the races, then the championship, and everyone else sort of flails along behind.   This entry, more likely than not, will just sit here as a season-long placeholder, in case something interesting happens.   But so far, this year, it's more of the same

Not even "Weird Al" could save it...

Over my Christmas vacation, it was with a tinge of sadness that I noticed that the Radio Shack I had grown up with had closed its doors.   My Radio Shack.   I suppose I shouldn't have been so surprised though, since I was often puzzled at all of the other Radio Shacks that were still open.   More surprising, was that when I went to go see a movie that week, this commercial ran in the theater beforehand. "Weird Al" Yankovic singing the joys of holiday shopping at Radio Shack, in a Radio Sha

The Imitation Game - Spoiler-free review

Okay… here's the actual review for The Imitation Game.   The Imitation Game is based on a book about the life of Alan Turing - one of the founders of computer science, and creator of the Turing Test (and if you don't know what that is, you need to turn in your nerd card). Given the somewhat obscure subject matter of the film, and the low-key advertising campaign, I was surprised to show up to a theater with a long line waiting to see it, and a packed house.   The movie flips between three t

The Imitation Game - Review-free review

The Imitation Game is…   Wait a second.   It just occurred to me that writing these reviews is an awful lot like writing book reports back in high school.     I hated writing book reports.   The Imitation Game gets an 8/10.

Big Hero 6 - Spoiler-free review

I went to see Big Hero 6 well over a month ago during the Thanksgiving weekend, so this review is a bit late. In fact it's really late, because I saw the movie a couple of weeks before that, and still hadn't written a review.   I first saw it at work, when co-director Don Hall screened it for our students, and did a Q&A afterwards. This was a great chance for the student to see the film and hear Don talk about it, but I was stuck halfway behind a pillar in the back corner of the room durin

Christmas Special rerun

Well, if it works for Charlie Brown and the Grinch...   I figured since Stay Frosty 2 and the AtariVox+ are now in the AtariAge store, this would be a good time to rerun this strip. All I'm missing are the commercials for Dolly Madison.     And in case you're wondering, yes - Artie has been modded so he can run Stay Frosty 2.   Merry Christmas!   rerun < PreviousIndexNext >

Interstellar - Spoiler-free review

December 1st, 10:34 PM   Well, since I didn't have any laundry to do tonight, I decided to go catch a late showing of Interstellar. So at the moment I'm sitting in an entirely empty IMAX theater, waiting for the 10:50 PM showing to start. And yes... I know I'm in for a three hour movie that I will keep me here until nearly 2 AM, but that's okay since my internal clock has been way off lately, and getting to sleep after 3 AM has become the norm.   I'll admit to not having had much interest in

Post Clone Wars

No no no... Post Clone Wars is not a breakfast cereal. But that would be kind of awesome - a breakfast cereal where all of the pieces looked exactly the same! No odd-shaped ones or broken bits in the bottom of the box, because, you know... they'd be clones.   Ummm... right.   Where was I?   Oh right, Star Wars: The Clone Wars.   So, I used to blog about the show while it was on the air. Then Disney pulled the plug after season 5 without wrapping up the series properly - mainly because Cl

Fun with epoxy!

I recently bought several Sony video presentation stands off eBay for work.   As with any eBay purchases, the results were a bit hit-and-miss, especially when it came to packing and shipping. One of the stands was so poorly packed that the camera had broken off, and an entire corner of the base had broken off.     Fortunately, all of the electronics still worked, so with a judicious application of J-B Weld PlasticWeld epoxy, I was able to repair the damage and getting a working stand out

To-Done?

Another year, another To-Do list. This one's pretty late. Usually I write these early in the year, but this year there wasn't really much to update. I'd finished up most of the projects on my last To-Do list and decided I wasn't really interested in taking on anything new. This new To-Do list (half-written in January) originally wasn't going to contain any homebrew projects. Between Star Castle, Ixion and Stay Frosty 2, I pretty-much got burned out on working on homebrews last year. I ended

Let's get lame, boys!

"Weird Al's" latest album - Mandatory Fun - may ironically be his last. With this album, Al reaches the end of his 14 album record contract (not including his collaboration with Wendy Carlos for Peter and the Wolf/Carnival of the Animals pt. 2, which was on a different label). The reason it may be his last, is that while he could certainly seek out a new contract, he's stated that he'd be able to be more timely by releasing singles digitally, rather than waiting the two or three years it takes t
