Spider-Man (The Amazing) - Mostly-spoiler-free review

So, here we go again. I'm killing time in a movie theater, waiting for a movie to start. However, there are only a couple of minutes to go, so I'm not going to get much typing done. I wasn't sure whether to go see The Amazing Spider-Man or not, since I can't say I was all that intrigued by the trailers. But I had a couple of hours to kill, and a free movie pass burning a hole in my pocket, so here I am. Well... time for the show.   (One movie and a late dinner at Chick-Fil-A later...)   (BT

Real-world Lynx fun

I recently added a Lynx to Artie the Atari. The reasons were twofold: I've had a Post-It note on my computer for well over a year that says, "Atari Lynx whose battery always dies by fourth panel".   . I've had a list of Lynx games I've been meaning to buy from B&C Computervisions for even longer than that. Much, much longer. . I'm not a completist, by any stretch of the imagination, but there are some games I've always wanted to pick up for the system (I own a Lynx II).   Nearly 22

The death of "Cartoon Brew"

Let's see, what bad things have happened in animation recently?   Well, DreamWorks is reportedly laying off 20 - 25% of their employees.   Rhythm & Hues is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.   And the website Cartoon Brew is dead.   Where did I read about all of these? Why, Cartoon Brew, of course!   Cartoon Brew has been, for better or worse, a central source of animation-related news and opinion for the last nine years.   Co-founded by animation historian and author Jerry Beck a

Welcome to the basement!

So, MLB Spring Training begins next week.   That magical* time of year, when baseball fans from across the league look forward to the new season with hope and expectations.   Especially those fans whose teams sucked last year.   Like my home team - Seattle.   Yes... we've had a few bad years up there. Bad signings (Chone Figgins - I'm looking at you), veteran players who faltered (Ichiro Suzuki - I'm looking at you), repeated injuries (Franklin Gutierrez - I'm looking at you... a whole b

Summer Full o' Superheroes pt. 5 - Green Lantern

Five down... one to go.   I only had a couple of Green Lantern comics as a kid. I knew he had a power ring that was recharged by sticking it into a lantern, and that he could fly and shoot energy blasts with it... and that was about it. It was only later as I began collecting comics that I peripherally learned more - that he was only one of thousands of Green Lanterns patrolling the galaxy, and that they make giant green things ("constructs") like dinosaurs, fists, and sledgehammers out of the

A Brief History of the History of Computer History

As I mentioned in a previous post, I recently rented Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview from iTunes. Here's the trailer:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmguwF7ruoM   I'll admit to having a fascination with the history of computers, for a couple of reasons. First of all, my dad worked as a computer programmer, so even from the earliest days I was at least peripherally aware of things like punch cards and ASCII printouts on continuous feed paper (someone at his work would print out Peanuts calen

Apple's next cloud service

So on Monday at the WWDC, amongst a spate of ho-hum announcements, Apple announced their forthcoming Documents in the cloud feature for OS X Spotted Ocelot, or whatever.   But here, and here only (unless someone else already thought of this) is the scoop on Apple's next big cloud service:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQpsckFdiMo

(Marvel's) The Avengers - Spoiler-free review

Well, I was going to write up some ridiculous, overlong blog entry about The Avengers and superhero movies in general. But then 2/3 of the way through it, I realized that even I didn't want to read it. I got off on some tangent about Batman and... anyway, I'll leave that for when The Dark Knight Rises comes out.   So here's what you need to know:   The Avengers is awesome.   The action is great. Everyone gets a chance to show why they excel at what they do. You could see how Captain Americ

John Severin

Well, they say death comes in threes... Ralph McQuarrie, Moebius, and one I missed a month ago... John Severin, who passed away February 12th.   I grew up reading Mad and Cracked magazines. There were numerous Mad knock-offs over the years, but the longest-surviving one was Cracked, and that was in no small part due to Severin's excellent work. His draftsmanship was something I aspire to even to this day. During a period from about 1977-1981, his work in Cracked was a huge influence on me. His

5-minute movie review - Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is a decent popcorn flick. The stunts and gadgets are completely ridiculous, unbelievable and well... impossible, but they're still pretty fun. Animation director Brad Bird (Iron Giant, Ratatouille, The Incredibles) makes his live-action debut here, and although he doesn't have any writing credits on the film, his distinctive fingerprints (especially his sense of humor) are still present throughout the film.   Don't expect a plot that makes any sense, since t

The Last Carfighter

Remember the movie, "The Last Starfighter"?   It's mostly notable for two things: being an early attempt at sort-of realistic CGI special effects, and being about video games. Otherwise, it's completely forgettable b-movie science fiction.   The premise was that there was an arcade game called "The Last Starfighter" which turned out to be a recruiting tool for actual starfighters. The game was a test of skill, and if you were good enough, an alien would come to earth, and haul you off to do
