Blog's Up!

Well, I've been pretty busy lately, but things are finally starting to calm down now.   Except for the electrical fire in the server room at work yesterday. But hey - that wasn't my fault.   Anyway... the school year at the college I work at ended a few weeks ago. This time with a twist - I graduated along with everyone else!   Well... not everyone. But the graduating class of 2007. Even though I haven't been a student since 1994.   It's a lonnnng story, but I was supposed to graduate in

The end of MacMAME.net

For nearly ten years, I ran a website originally called MacMAME News and Info. After a couple of years, I bought a domain name, and it became MacMAME.net.   MacMAME was the Mac version of MAME - the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. A fantastic piece of software that allows you to play thousands of classic (and not-so-classic) arcade games on your home computer. I say "was" since even though MAME is certainly still around, MacMAME hasn't been updated in two years. The project, by all accounts,

Tales from... THE FUTURE!

Working at a film school, dealing with technology every day, means I have to try and keep up on what's happening in video, computers and software as a regular part of my job. I seem to spend more time every year just trying to get a handle on new technology coming down the pike.   Also, I'm a Mac user, which is an interesting pursuit because of the whole rumor community that has popped up around Apple and its products. Trying to predict where they're going next seems to be a past-time for some

Vs. Vs. Golf

About a year-and-a-half ago, I posted about getting my best-ever score in Vs. Golf in MAME: 16 under par. Since then, I've kept playing and have gotten back to that score and near it quite a few times. But 18 under eluded me. I'd always have one or two bad shots that kept me from reaching it. I also started playing the Women's Vs. Golf ROM as well. If anything, I think the course is trickier. Part of that might be due to unfamiliarity with it. But it did help me practice and get better overall

A year and a week

On December 17, 2010, Disney will release Tron: Legacy.   Yes... I'm looking forward to this.   I'm posting about it now, because Disney just released a teaser poster, and a couple of publicity stills.   And so you don't have to dig them up elsewhere, and because I like to laugh in the face of "cease and desist" orders, and because I need an excuse to pull my blog back off of "Page 2"... here are the pics:   "The Game Has Changed"   Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund   Garrett Hedlund

Vroom-vroom!

Yet more mini-arcade action! This time, it's all about racing games:   Pole Position actually has a tiny little steering wheel... but it's actually just a steering wheel shaped joystick. No analog controls. Although for this version, analog isn't really needed. You also don't need to shift, the buttons just accelerate and brake, but really, adding shifting to something this small would be a little ridiculous. (Get it? A little ridiculous?  ) It's hard to justify being picky on

Cartoon Party-Time!

In previous years, I've posted about our end-of-school-year student film screenings for the Character Animation Program at CalArts (my day job, when I'm not working on homebrews).   Let's recap! 2019 2018 2017 2016 2015 2014 2013 2012 2011 2010 2009 2008 2007 I wasn't blogging before that. But I've been editing these shows since '93 (when I was still a student!).   Anyway... oh, wait a second. Those last tw

A quick digression

Jumping back to the animation industry for a second... the rumor of the day is that Apple will buy Disney. Umm... no. Not gonna happen. Why? Apple has no reason to, or more to the point, Steve Jobs has no reason to. With the Disney buyout of Pixar (or more accurately - the Pixar takeover of Disney), Steve is already in the position he needs to be in, to get whatever he needs from Disney for Apple, and what he's after is content for the iTunes video store, or more to the point - content for t

Go Speed, Go!

In case you didn't know, the Wachowski brothers (of the Matrix films) are making a live-action version of Speed Racer.   So... okay then.   This project has kicked around Hollywood for years (once rumored to have Tom Cruise attached to it as Speed, to give you an idea of how long ago this was), and although I've been a Speed Racer fan since I was a little kid, neither of the two series' revivals were any good (although the Japanese one wasn't nearly as bad as the American one), so I've alwa

Monte-Carlo's Flying Circus

The 2019 WRC (World Rally Championship) kicked off in Monte-Carlo this weekend, and the new season pretty-much picked up where last year left off: Sebastien Ogier just barely beat Thierry Neuville for the win, even though Ott Tänak was the fastest car on the road all weekend. Tänak was effectively out of the running due to a tire puncture early on. Still, he clawed his way back to third place, which was a pretty impressive feat to watch. Neuville himself only lost by about 2 seconds, and if not

The Olympics revisited

Wow... it's been four years already since I last blogged about the Winter Olympics!   I guess though, that's because it's been four years since the last Winter Olympics.   Anyway... I watched (actually recorded, then watched) the opening ceremonies tonight. I thought they were nicely done. The use of the floor with the video projectors was pretty cool, especially the parts where it "broke apart" into an ice floe, and then some whales swam through, shooting off their blowholes.   Actually,

One down, umpteen to go!

I think the forums are slightly wonky. First, daylight savings time hasn't kicked in yet. And second, October gained an extra day:And even though this is going to throw the Trick-or-Treaters into a tailspin, I like it. I can always use an extra day here or there.Since I wasn't really able to do any more work on RPS or the MiniGame MultiCart (pending various approvals), I decided to finish up the Solar Plexus label. Now I just need to get the Photoshop file to Jess, and that project's all wrappe
