Would you want to move here?

This is the kind of photo the Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce doesn't want people to see:   (Top number is outdoors, bottom number is indoors.)   I used to think 89 degrees was unbearably hot when I lived in Seattle. That was 20 degrees ago!   Fortunately, the forecast says it will be back "down" to 99 next Monday.

The next 16 reviews

Here's the next batch of games I'll be reviewing. There will be quite a few more coming after these, but these are here now since they were all on my to-do list for one reason or other...

Goodbye, Maynard

Maynard Ferguson passed away yesterday at the age of 78.   I won't try to recap his life or career. You can read all about that here.   Maynard wasn't the reason I started playing trumpet originally, but he was certainly the spark that ignited my interest in playing jazz, and in fact, kicked off my love of jazz in the first place.   He toured pretty much his entire life, right up until the end. I hope that I can find something that I love to do that much, and be able to leave something of

Let's look at this from a standpoint of status...

What do we have on the spacecraft that works? ;)The RPS Manual is nearly finished now. The only thing left to do is finish up the instructions on how to play, and list the game options. You'd think that would be most of the manual right there. But no. I wrote an introduction to the game, a "getting started" page, character descriptions, created new background illustrations for each page, re-formatted the label artwork to fit the cover, and then made the back cover. But that's all done now, so I'm

24 years later

Yep. Another album review.   I've been waiting for this one to come out on CD since, well, since CDs first came out.   Why some albums take forever to come out on CD is beyond me, but better late than never.   In this case though, it's not just one album... but two!     MF Horn 3 and MF Horn 4 & 5: Live at Jimmy's by Maynard Ferguson. This finally completes the CD release of all of his Columbia albums.   Now, not all of the work he did while he was with Columbia was all that gre

You can't erase dirt

I spent more time fixing the RPS label today. There's been an area of the drawing that's been bugging me all along, but it wasn't until I printed it out and actually drew on top of it with a pen that I figured out how to fix it. It ended up being a line that needed to be moved, and an area re-shaded a little bit. Then all of the sudden that area seemed to "snap" into place. I was also able to make a couple of other areas work better, so it was worth the effort.Sometimes you just have to see it i

One and Only

About a month before passing away last Summer, Maynard Ferguson recorded what turned out to be his last album. It's just been released, and is now available exclusively through Maynard's website (and iTunes).     I was rather disappointed with his previous album, MF Horn VI: Live at Ronnie's. Of course, recording live albums is always hit-or-miss. However, since that album was recorded, Maynard had gotten into better shape physically, and his playing had improved dramatically, according to

Movie review - Quantum of Solace

Well, it took me awhile to see the new James Bond film - Quantum of Solace - but last week, see it I did.   I thought Casino Royale was an excellent restart to the Bond franchise, which had really ground to a halt. As much as I thought Pierce Brosnan should've made a good James Bond, the films he was in just never distinguished themselves, and seemed to all sort of blur together.   In Quantum of Solace, Daniel Craig firmly establishes himself in the role, much in the way Sean Connery did. The Stupidest Thing I've Ever Purchased

As you know if you've read my blog, I'm a fan of "Weird Al" Yankovic. I've bought all of his albums, books, videos, and many years ago went to one of his concerts (and really would like to have gone to more).   But one thing I didn't buy, was a boxed set of all of his recordings that came out in 2017 called Squeeze Box. Why? Well, first, I have all of his albums. And even though there was a bonus CD of extras called "Medium Rarities" there just wasn't enough on there to warrant buying

Sloggin' through Sweden, Mixing it up in Mexico

Usually, I post one WRC blog entry for the season, then just add comments for each subsequent rally. But since I had already named this year's entry after the first rally in Monte Carlo, I thought I'd post new entries for each of the other rallies too (or every other rally... or every third rally...). Rally Sweden was a bit of a disappointment in that the weather was unusually warm, and so what's supposed to be the only full-snow rally of the year turned into a slushy mud bog. Now, driving o

On Corse for the win

Man... I sure hope I can come up with enough puns for the rest of the WRC season. Anyway, Tour De Corse (Rally Corsica) was last weekend, and the unpredictability of the World Rally Championship continued! This week's fastest driver was... Elfyn Evans?! Yep! The Ford M-Sport driver was dominant most of the weekend. Even though he lost the lead in the final Saturday stage, he roared right back on Sunday and took an 11 second lead from Thierry Neuville heading into the final power stage. And

LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special - Spoiler-free review

Yes, there's a new Star Wars Holiday Special. The most infamous piece of Star Wars lore returns to Disney+, but this time in LEGO form (and yes... LEGO is supposed to be all caps).   If you're unaware of the first Star Wars Holiday Special... well, I just don't know how to describe it. It's unbelievable in its awfulness. Imagine some weird, unfunny mash-up of the worst 70's variety show you've ever seen, featuring has-been TV comedians doing painfully unfunny "comedy" sketches, a coupl

New old music - part 3

Once again, Sleepy Night Records digs through their vaults an old trunk, and dusts off some more "Lost Tapes":     Maynard Ferguson - The Lost Tapes Volume Two, revisits some more vintage demos and live recordings of Maynard and his big band from 1968-1974.   As with Volume One, these were never intended for release, and are presented warts and all. These are recordings for fans, to be sure. Fans of Maynard, or any fans of hard-core, heavy-hitting big-band jazz. Yes, that's a weird descri

Sure... and Sony will buy Apple, too.

So the big brouhaha in the animation industry over the last couple of days is the age-old rumor of Disney planning to buy Pixar.   As far as I've been able to tell, all of the articles have been based around one article which originally appeared in the Wall Street Journal. What's interesting to me about all of this, is how all of these other "news" services seem to be treating this as fact. The buyout is practically a done-deal by their accounts. Although at the end of most articles, most are
