George ! ! !

So, it turns out that George Lucas has decided to release the original versions of the Star Wars Trilogy after all.   Now, this is very cool news, because I'm a fan of the original Star Wars.   "Episode IV - A New Hope"? Phooey! Ever since I first saw that appear in the opening crawl in 1981 it's looked out-of-place to me.   The original "Star Wars" opening crawl synced better with the opening music, and well... it was Star Wars! The movie I grew up with, having seen it a dozen times durin

In case you were wondering...

In case you were wondering what was up with the two "Stupid Game Ideas" posts from earlier today, the actually-stupid blog software malfunctioned and made two Draft entries into Published ones. For some reason. Basically, those entries are placeholder lists of games I plan to mock-up for my Stupid Game Ideas series, one of which led (eventually) to Draconian. I have a lot of drafts sitting "on hold" at the moment while I work on them. Probably 20. Most are game reviews in various states of i

Adaptability

Live - RIGHT NOW. The Virtual 2020 CalArts Character Animation Open Show: https://youtu.be/zjXrDox2a08   We didn't have a show in the Spring, and can't meet in person yet. So we're kicking off the fall semester remotely by screening the films online that our students were able to complete over the summer despite the craziness of the Coronavirus pandemic and resulting campus shutdown. Enjoy!

The Sixer Fixer-upper: Part 2

Welcome to part 2 of my 2600 repair blog thing! Didn't have to wait very long for that, did ya'?     Part 1 was just getting a little bit too long, so I decided to break this up into two parts. Or maybe three. Probably three. I haven't written that far yet.     In Part 1, when I wrote that I wanted my 2600 fixed permanently, there was still one thing that had been bugging me for years...     My 2600 has been taken apart and put back together so many t

iThink i'llPass on the iPhone

So AT&T announced their iPhone rates today.   Thanks, but no.   The minimum is $70 per month, all the way up to $130, and that's assuming you don't do any text messaging. You want that? Another $5 - $20.   I don't use my existing phone all that much (land line only - no cellphone), and even though the iPhone is an extremely cool device - I just can't see dumping that much extra money per month down the dumper just to use the thing. Especially since there's no sign of the one third-part

Stripped

Finally! Someone found a way to make Garfield funny...   Garfield minus Garfield           The kicker to this, is that not only did Jim Davis not sue, but he liked the idea so much, he had them published in a book.   (And yes, for those observant blog readers, originally this entry's title referenced Jay Leno, since his humor is just as stale and repetitive as Garfield's. But I thought people might get confused since the entry doesn't have anything to do with the current late-n

Shifting priorities, with a "manual" transmission

Well, it turns out that not only am I designing the manual for RPS, it looks like I'll be writing it now, too. But that's cool, since I created new characters for the game, and I kind of relish the idea of writing their back-stories.So this moves it to the top of my "things to do" list, and I ended up getting a pretty decent first pass at the layout done last night. I haven't started any of the writing yet, since I wanted to see how much space I was going to end up with, but between some e-mails

The Sixer-Fixer-upper: Revisited

So, remember when I foolishly wrote this? I guess two years counts as "some longevity".   Because yesterday, after recently moving back to Seattle*, I finally unpacked my 2600, hooked it up for the first time, and got this:     Looks suspiciously like the pics in that other blog post, doesn't it? (I'm assuming you clicked on the link. If you didn't... how do you know I'm not lying? Or maybe there's something really spectacularly awesome you're missing o

One more four the road

This is going to be a lot shorter than the last couple of projects. You can pick out details from those blog entries if you need to install a UAV mod of your own, but I'm not going to go over it all in detail again here - much of it is the same.   One last console to mod, and no repairs needed! This time - a four-switcher. Or as I like to call 'em, a four-banger: Somehow, I don't think my console nicknames are catching on. 4x4? Foursider? No?   Anyway... here's its

More cartoons! Now with 75% less!

A couple of weeks ago, I posted about our students' 2021 Open Show. An eight-hour marathon of animated films, produced over the last two academic years (since we couldn't have a show at all a year ago). For the first time ever we held it online, since we still can't have large screenings in person. But that meant anyone got to watch it! Quite literally, from all over the world.   Of course, not everyone wants to sit through an eight-hour show.   But this Saturday night, you c

The 7800 Mod Mess Mixup Fixup - pt. 5

Well, this blog entry just about ended very differently.   But it's all-good now.   So close to the finish line... just a couple more things to do after this. But first, here's where we're at now.   When we last left this poor, abused 7800, I was about to install a UAV mod, using one of -^CrossBow^-'s 7800 UAV Mount Boards.    First - I need to install the wires (or a header, but in this case, wires). I soldered the first one, then held each successive wire in place

2600 Chewnyor Fixit & Mod kit - pt. 2

So, it's time to throw a UAV mod into this 2600 Jr.   As far as installing mods, this isn't exactly my first rodeo. But it is my first time installing a mod into a Jr., and it's my first time installing a UAV mod into a 2600.   When I installed a UAV mod in John's 7800, I had the advantage of using an auxiliary board from -^CrossBow^- that served as both an audio board and a mount for the UAV. This made installation pretty simple.   For the Jr., though, the UAV inst

Herb Alpert Is... A Spoiler-free review

I've been a fan of Herb Alpert since I was a kid. We just about wore out the Tijuana Brass Christmas Album playing it every year. Then for some reason, in my early teens, I started really getting into their music. I'm not sure why, other than it was probably because I was getting into collecting records at the time (the Monkees), my folks already had a number of TJB records at home, and I was playing trumpet in band at school. And, well, the music was fun and catchy. It was already at least a do

Spider-Man: Far From Home - Spoiler-free review

I saw Spider-Man: Far From Home a couple of weeks ago while on vacation, but since I was on vacation, I didn't feel like typing up a review at the time. I had other, vacation-y things to do.     Also, while I think the forum changes at AtariAge have been a welcomed and much needed upgrade, I don't care for the changes in the blogs at all. In fact, I've all-but stopped visiting the blogs. The main page is a cluttered mess with banners that should be hidden unless you want to view them,
