Fish and Chips and Mario

Lent, 1981....The video game craze is in full force and my brother and I are relentlessly pummeling my parents to get us an Atari because it's educational, everyone has one and whatever other brainwashing tecniques we could think of....an effort that would pay off at Christmas time. As per usual for us at the time we headed down to my Grandparents house in Lorain, Ohio for Easter weekend....a 3 hour trek from our suburban Detroit home. We arrived on Thursday night at 9:30, my brother and I con

fall

ah fall. Fall has always been my favorite season. I love the weather...not too hot...not too cold. I love football, halloween, and the leaves changing color. As a kid, school would start and the days of playing street baseball and street hockey were coming to an end by the beginning of October. It was time to break out the video games. We would hold tournaments with players competing head to head, highest score would move on to the next round. In college we used to have two tvs on on monday

Ah....the Arcade

Its ben about 23 years now since I first heard the word "arcade". I came to love those dim lit dungeons where you could spend a saturday afternoon pumping quarters into the classics. I suppose I look back at the arcade days the way my dad looks back at the matinees at the theateres of his youth. Due in large part to the rise and advancement of home video games, arcades are largely a thing of the past. Sad.....but thats the way things seem to evolve. My father now hits Blockbuster on a saturd

mowing the lawn

I am a suburbanite. I live in a typical midwestern townjust like the movie "the burbs". Lawn maintenance is how you are judged around these parts. I'm not doing so well.Ive got pretty severe weed problems right now, and because I have no sprinkler system, Im always fighting to keep it from drying up. Our lawn is one of the worst on our block...and I can almost feel people laughing at it.I dont like doing yard work as much as most people around here do. Tonight I mowed it. At least when its

fake sports baseball

just a quick little thought. Remember "real sports baseball"? My favorite part of that game was that any ball that was headed for the stands could be caught if an outfielder got in front of it. Funny stuff. Watching the all star game this past week, I was bombarded with footage of Reggie Jacksons' 1971 HR the last time the all star game was in detroit.I'm pretty sure my right fielder would have caught that one if the game were played on real sports baseball

Fireworks and 2 year olds

Well I missed our towns fireworks for the third straight year. My daughter(2 years old) is just not quite able to stay up that late yet. Next year I think we'll be good to go. I think fireworks are one of those nice family activities that you keep with you all your life. Some good video game firework displays1. MVP Baseball 20042. Peles' Soccer

reality tv

I know I am wierd. I was born that way. Most people like ketchup..I go for Mustard. Most people like Playstation 2, I prefer VCS 2600. Most people like speedboats, I wish I had a sailboat. Ok...I could go on like that all day but I think Ive made my point.I recently realized that my taste in television is also quite.....wierd. There are two reality TV shows that I really look forward to watching, and I think they are about the least popular shows of thier genre. The first is called "Blowout

Thanks Pistons

Well...they dug a hole and tried to get out but in the end they were buried. Congradulations to the spurs The NBA can breathe a sigh of relief...it can now go back to promoting its star players(Tim Duncan), and creating stars (Manu Ginobli). I hope that doesnt sound too bitter of me, because i've always thought that was the case.Thank you Pistons for reminding me what team sports are about. Before I go I have to mention that I found out theres going to be a Bad News Bears remake coming out.

Comebacks

With my Pistons needing a great comeback to win the Finals, I started thinking about comebacks. I think last years world series is about the best ive seen in sports in my life. As it pertains to video games, ive had several good ones on madden football and other sports games. I think the thing to do when youve started something in a disasterous way and you are hanging on by a thread is to forget the big picture and focus on one small thing. When you complete that small goal, move on to the n

Williamsburg

I Was 12, me and my brother had to ride down to Williamsburg, VA with my mom, my aunt and my grandmother.....they brought us along on thier womens potery vacation....it sucked. My brother and I did have a handheld pac man game for the ride. It was a clunky round yellow thing, but it was a fun little game. This fun ended when my aunt...who was driving...became annoyed with the sounds of the game, banned us from further play.moral....no matter how bad things get, be thankfull, they could get worse.G

my unhappy aniversary

It happened 1 year ago today. I got laid off.I went into work on that friday....just like I always have. 2 hours later I was escorted out with my stuff in a box. I was in shock. With the job market sucking, I would have to try to find a new job. Worse yet, I lost my health benefits 1 week before my daughters 1st birthday and several scheduled immunizations.4 months and a lot of prayers later...I was working again...In a different department of the same company that canned me.Going through t

The Breakfast Club

I noticed this little fact a couple of weeks ago while I was playing Some video games. I had the other TV on. "The Breakfast Club" was on...and most of my attention was being paid to my efforts at Missile Command.Anyway, I noticed that you can pretty much follow that movie without looking at it. There are a few visually based scenes, but its mostly dialogue driven. Its also in my all time top 10.GO PISTONS

Atari Basketball A.I.

Well, the Pistons are in the finals....Beat the Spurs!....another 90 degree day in D town. Watching the NBA playoffs lately got me thinking about basketball video games.I love NBA Street and the newer EA NBA and NCAA titles, I'll always love playing Dr J vs Bird on the C64......and then....theres the bizzare Atari Basketball....yeah.Theres one thing that makes this game unlike any other of its time. The computer opponent has....."Emotions". Thats right, if a human gets 8 or 10 pts ahead, th

the summer of decathalon

Well, my Pistons are still alive...yay. I spent my day painting several rooms in my house...now after I finish this....its game time.A quick story. Its summer 1984, the olympics were coming to America and i just got "Decathalon" by Activision. My summer would be spent watching the Olympics, having mini Olympics with my friends, and plaing Decathalon.I played against my brother...and we kept going back and forth alternating high scores. Then it happened. I found "the glitch"...and imortallity

Hello

Hello. Just thought id give this a try....I started a diary as a child...but quit after a couple of days...so we'll see.I got my 2600 on Christmas, 1980...the best gift ever. It came with Combat of course, and I also got Asteroids, Space Invaders and Breakout that day....not bad.We played that thing as a family all day and I was instantly hooked for life.I continued plaing my 2600 through the mid 80's, and in 1987, i saved my money and bought a NES. Thats the system I packed and took to colle
