Next XBox will install all games to hard drive

from http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/03/20/xbox-durango-requires-all-games-to-be-installed

"Every Durango console will have a hard drive, although its exact capacity has not been chosen," reads help documentation in the Durango XDK. "It will be large enough, however, to hold a large number of games. All games will be installed on the hard drive. Play from the optical disc will not be supported."

My question is why. I can't think of anything (anti-piracy or anti-resale) which would require entire games to be stored on the hard drive. Any data which is stored on the drive has to start on the disk, so why not leave it on the disk?

I have bad feeling that all games are available by downloading them. Of course you have to pay for them.

That's how the new game generation works.

No, games will still be delivered on and installed from Blu-Ray discs (presumably in addition to the download option), but they won't be played from the disc.

I smell used games control in here somewhere. Too bad MS and Sony are smart enough not to reveal at launch..

That is certainly how the industry is going. Publishers look at each used game sale as a lost new game sale. I don't think it's a one-for-one per title, but it might be dollar-for-dollar.

However, the used market isn't always about buying something for less. My Rock Band instruments were written off in the fire and the only way to replace them was via the used market.

As far as modern consoles go, I either only buy used games, or wait a year (or two) until the prices drop to under $20. Otherwise I couldn't afford to buy them at all.

I doubt I'll be buying a next-gen console for many years to come - I only just recently bought a PS3. By then, most early games for the systems will only be available as used, or more likely, downloads. But they still should be cheaper. I'm patient.

I must have been thinking of the Xbox 1080.

Ok. I get it. Disks are used for install games only. You play the game from hard disk. The games would load more faster than from disks.

From now, I wonder if expansion packs games are possible.

Yes, and many games already do that - copy chunks of code & data to local storage for faster access & patchability. But there's still chunks of content (e.g. pre-rendered video & music tracks) which could stay on the optical disc - saving both hard disk space and reducing the install time.

I've used the copy to hard drive feature on Fallout: New Vegas and it still seemed to use the disc. Hopefully they really, really will use this feature this time.
