I really, really like my iPad Mini. In the year since I bought it, I've used it far more than I ever expected to. So much so, that my iPhone's use dropped way off. I almost never play games on my iPhone anymore (unless it's the only iDevice with me), and only surf the 'net with it if I don't have Wi-Fi access (or again, if the iPhone's all I have with me). Although the iPhone is a lot easier to hide under the table during meetings. Plus, the iPhone is still my main music player, especially at work and in the car. And I also use it for something else too… what was that other thing again?

Oh right, phone calls.

Anyway...

I like my iPad Mini so much… I got rid of it.

Because I wanted a new one.

Even though the Mini was only a year old and worked perfectly fine… I craved a faster processor for graphics-heavy games. Most games played great but some frame rates would noticeably dip (Real Racing 3 - I'm looking at you). Plus I was always filling the Mini up (usually with games), so I wanted more storage. I kept having to remove things, and didn't have room for any of my music on there (annoying when traveling, and wanting to do something on the iPad but having to listen to music using the iPhone). And then… there's that whole retina display thing. Small text would sometimes get pixelated and hard to read. Generally not a problem, but a minor annoyance, and one that would be solved by taking care of the other two issues by getting a new iPad Mini with Retina Display.

So I set my sights on a new iPad Mini Retina. I sold my Mini to a co-worker (for the same price I would've gotten online), so with that plus a little extra money I had stashed away (and a conveniently-timed tax return), I strolled into the Apple Store, 99% sure I was going to buy a new iPad Mini Retina. I loved the size of the Mini. I could easily hold it in one hand and draw on it with the other, it was just large enough so I could type in landscape mode (mostly), and it was super lightweight. The iPad 2 - not so much. I'd used one of those before, and while "brick" might be a bit unfair, it was certainly heavy enough to be uncomfortable holding with your thumbs for very long.

But then… there was the iPad Air.

Funny thing about that 1% uncertainty.

I went back and forth comparing the two for quite some time. I even brought my own stylus to the store to try writing and drawing on them. The Apple salesperson was even nice enough to let me borrow an untethered Mini to compare with the Air side-by-side (hint for Apple: put both models on the same table). And the more I used the Air, the lighter it seemed. The weight difference between it and the Mini was effectively negligible. Sure, it was bigger, but not as massive as the iPad 2. I'd be hard pressed to get my hand completely around the back of the Air, but then I rarely held my Mini that way anyway - I usually held it by the edge, or rested it on something. The CPU is effectively the same between the Mini Retina and Air, the cameras are the same, the resolution is the same (the Mini Retina's color gamut has been criticized some, but that wasn't a factor for me). In the end, the only real difference is that the screen on the Air is a bit bigger. Actually, it's significantly bigger, and that's what sold me on it. After I got my iPad Mini, one of the reasons I moved away from my iPhone was how much easier everything was to see. Text, games, videos, everything. As I compared the two iPads, and looked at the same apps (like StockTouch), websites and other text on them - even though I was seeing the exact same amount of information - I could just see everything on the Air easier, and from a greater distance. The more I thought about it, the bigger that 1% uncertainty became, and I finally decided that in the end, I'd be much happier not squinting at my new iPad.

The extra $100… well, not quite as happy about that.

But about three hours into it I'm very happy with the Air. Everything is so much easier to see on it. It's a little strange at first though, getting used to needing peripheral vision a bit more on some games, but given the extra clarity, higher resolution (than my old Mini) and the silky-smooth gameplay, the cost was well worth it. Oh, and the color gamut thing? Yeah… the Air's display is downright gorgeous. The colors are incredibly rich - there's almost a depth to it. The speed of everything is dramatically better - frame rates are higher, apps load more quickly and run smoother (and I never thought my old Mini was all that slow). The only thing really slowing it down now is the pokey Wi-Fi I have at home. It is a bit heavier to hold, but not uncomfortably so (at least, not so far). I ordered a new case for it that should arrive tomorrow, so that will add a little bulk to it, but not much. I was really pleased with my last Invellop case because it was light, unobtrusive, cheap and actually better than Apple's overpriced ones, so I went with them again for the Air.

Looking at the iPad Air now it almost seems… massive. I keep looking for my little iPad Mini and seeing this huge thing in its place. It may take some getting used to, but my eyes will thank me.

Now then… time for an update on the apps I've accumulated since the last update:

Watch Food Network - Does what it says. Lets you watch Food Network shows. I bought it for… something. I forget what. I rarely watch Food Network anymore, except for some shows like Worst Cooks in America and The Great Food Truck Race. Everything's just become tiresome. I miss Good Eats and Unwrapped.

MacWorld Digital Magazine - Because for some reason, I still get the print version. The digital edition comes with it. I'm not sure if either are worth it anymore, but the nostalgic luddite in me still likes flipping through magazines.

Angry Birds Star Wars HD - Already had Angry Birds Star Wars, but wanted the HD version for my iPad Mini. Plus, I think it was on sale. Might have played it a few times since getting the HD version.

How To Cook Everything - Well, not everything. I didn't see squirrels in there anywhere. But I needed to look up something, and I think this was free. I forget what I was looking for now. This was back in July.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Again, I think it was on sale. Again, back in July. Still haven't played it. But now I have a bigger display to look at it on, so maybe...

Tiny Wings HD - See: Angry Birds Star Wars HD

Turbo FAST - Tie-in to the Turbo movie from last summer. Free-ish. Played a few times, then deleted it. Never saw the movie.

Nest Mobile - I bought a Nest thermostat last summer, and it's one of the best purchases I've made (despite Google having bought the company since then). It's easy to program (it learns as you adjust it - which works remarkably well), but the kicker for me was being able to turn on my air conditioning remotely from my iPhone on days when it was 110° outside. Coming home to a nice cool apartment (or a warm one in the winter) is well-worth the price. Plus, it's just looks really cool on the wall.

Bad Piggies HD - See: Tiny Wings HD and Angry Birds Star Wars HD

Smash Bandits - The sequel of sorts to Smash Cops. And Smash Cops Heat. More of the same. Played it a couple of times I think.

Asphalt 8: Airborne - This is Burnout on the iPad. Get it. 'Nuff said. (Be careful you don't crash into pay walls, however.)

Angry Birds Star Wars II - Because one isn't enough? I don't know… I haven't really played it all that much. More of the same.

NFL Mobile - Because the Seahawks were awesome last year, that's why. This app, however, isn't. You can't stream games live, and their live game stats are terrible. They need to just rip off MLB.com At Bat.

Splashtop 2 Remote Desktop - Lets me control my Mac from my iPad. Works pretty well. However, now I can mirror my iMac to my Apple TV, so if I need my Mac in my living room, I can just use that with a wireless keyboard. But I've never really used it. It's just nice to know I can. For some reason... I suppose.

LEDit - Turn your iPhone into one of those scrolling LED signs. Great for flashing messages to people during boring meetings at work.

Star Wars: Tiny Death Star - Sounded like a winner to me, since I really liked Kairosoft's Mega Mall Story. Bought this in November. Still haven't played it.

GT Racing 2 - A pretty good alternative to Real Racing 3.

Apple Store for iPad - Because you need to spend MORE money.

Doctor Who: Legacy - Picked this up while the whole 50th anniversary thing was going on. Not so much Doctor Who as it is a fairly mediocre shape-matching game. I guess. I just played it once. It's smaller on the inside.

Limbo - Very highly acclaimed game. It was either free for a day or on sale. Haven't played it yet.

Star Command - Again in the vein of some of Kairosoft's titles. And no, I haven't played this one either.

Rube Works - A video game based on the comic strips of Rube Goldberg. It sounds better than it is.

Angry Birds Go! - A cart game. Played it once.

Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga - I've played through the original trilogy versions on… PS2? PSP? Something. Anyway, now I have it on my iPad, and the camera is just as terrible as ever. Controls are about as you'd expect - less-than-ideal. But how can you not love Star Wars and LEGOs?

Cut The Rope 2 - Because there aren't enough games on this list that I haven't played yet. So here's another.

Reckless Racing HD - Still one of my favorites, so I bought the HD version for extra goodness on the Mini.

Scanner Pro - Free app of the day, or something. Trying to remember why I downloaded this now… it's not a game, so I didn't get it to not play it.

Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD - Hey! Sonic games! I hear these are great conversions! People really love Sonic! I never owned a Genesis! So I haven't played these either! Must have been on sale! !!! !!!!

Sprite Something - I needed something to animate a couple of sprites for Stay Frosty 2 while I was away from my Mac, and this fit the bill. It even has a 2600 palette in it. Nice.

Sudoku - My dad's into Sudoku, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I like Scrabble better. You can't spell veeblefetzer in Sudoku.

Oculus Visualizer Free - I was looking for something like the iTunes Visualizer. I'm still looking.

Jet Car Stunts 2 - Loved the original! I've played this once. Or twice.

Umoove Experience - Interesting tech demo using face tracking.

Pong World - Free. Downloaded solely to use as a punchline.

LEGO Star Wars Microfighters - Ah! Here's how can you not love Star Wars and LEGOs. It's a mediocre vertical shoot 'em up, a product tie-in, and a dessert topping. (Okay, not so sure about that last one.)

King 5 News HD - Because I'm from Seattle, and I want to check up on Bertha from time to time.

Flappy Bird - If everyone else downloaded something, would you download it too? The answer apparently is "yes". I've actually played this a few times. It's Joust with obstacles. Williams (or whoever owns Joust now) is missing a big opportunity here.

WRC - Finally, a new app that lets me follow the WRC and read about Sebastien Ogier winning all the time.

NBC Sports Live Extra, NBC Olympics Highlights and Results - Because Women's Curling is awesome.

Toast Time - Cute game about flying toast that blows stuff up. Played it at least twice.

StockTouch - Someone actually made looking at stocks interesting! (No they didn't. But the app still looks cool.)

Whew! That's sure a lot of stuff! So if I don't play all of those new games - what do I play? Mostly Bejeweled and Scrabble. Plus some Crystal Caliburn (which looks fully awesome on the Air) and Tristan. A lot of the games I haven't played yet because I figured they're going to be big time-sucks, and I just haven't felt like committing my already-constrained time to yet-more-games. But with a new iPad (and better visibility) maybe it'll encourage me to dive into some of them.

As a final aside - I haven't updated some of my apps to the HD versions (notably Scrabble and Bejeweled), because a few iOS updates ago Apple made a nifty little change where the iPad now uses iPhone retina assets for games, instead of just chunkily scaling them up. So I get HD without re-buying the apps. It's not quite full-screen, but I'll happily live with it.

The iPad Air is really nice. I picked up one in November. Mom tried mine and went out right away to buy one to replace hers - all because of how much easier it was to hold due to the weight reduction. She'd inherited dad's iPad 2 when he replaced his with the first retina model with cellular support (he found WiFi to be too limiting with all is work travel).

I do wish they'd have put the Touch ID on it.

You might like to check out the iHome iDL100, being able to dock the iPad and iPhone for charging is quite convenient (plus there's a USB port on the back that can charge a 3rd device). I picked up one over the holidays from Bed Bath and Beyond for under $100 and liked it so much I picked up 2 more, one for my guest room and one for mom's birthday present.

Touch ID would be nice. About the time it came out I started locking my iDevices with a passcode. Annoying, yes, but I don't worry about someone getting into my stuff as much now. The trick is setting auto-lock to a reasonable amount of time, so you don't need to enter it every time you pick the thing up. But I'm envious of Touch ID - a co-worker has it on his 5s. I'm sure now that I've plunked down money on a new iPad, Apple will add Touch ID to it any day.

More apps.

Picked up Bamboo Paper - Notebook to use with the stylus I have. It's a pretty low-end app as far as it goes, and you have to buy brushes with in-app purchases. If you've already bought their stylus, the brushes should be free.

Domino's Pizza - because I like to know exactly what's happening to my pizza at all times. I've come to a conclusion: as far as chain pizzas go, Round Table is way better fresh, but Domino's microwaves better for leftovers. I can't get the pizza I want down here, so I have to settle. And to be fair to Domino's, they have improved.

Hulu Plus - compared to Netflix their video quality is terrible, and they have ads (which is ridiculous when you have to pay for it anyway). So why did I get it? Way more episodes of classic Doctor Who. I'm starting at the beginning and working my way up.

Top Gear: Race the Stig - not nearly as cool as it sounds. No - you don't get to drive a bunch of hypercars around the Top Gear test track, to see if you can beat the Stig's times. It's an endless runner, with cartoony cart-type vehicles, and vaguely Top Gear-themed graphics. But it was free.

Threes! - the biggest gaming sensation since Flappy Bird! I guess. Anyway, it's an interesting puzzle game. Good for a few minutes' worth of diversion at a time, which is about all I look for in an iOS game.

Oh, and I finally got around to using Scanner Pro. Works pretty well. Good lighting helps a lot.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed - I played this once or twice. Must have been cheap or free. It's a cart game, like every other cart game in the entire universe.

Vevo - You can watch music videos on this. At least, that's the theory. The problem is, today's music is all crap. Was hoping for something I could watch old music videos on. I guess that's what YouTube is for.

As an aside, I've found myself playing Top Gear: Race The Stig quite a lot. Yes, it's basically just another endless runner, but after spending some time with it, I've found (to my surprise) it's an enjoyable endless runner, with non-intrusive IAP. The only thing I've spent money on was 99¢ to remove the ads. Needs more Top Gear-isms though, and the option to change your environment would be nice (the environment has changed twice so far, but I don't know if my game progress or an update triggered it, and I can't revisit the earlier ones).

Just bought an Otterbox Armor case for my iPhone (for going to the beach). Much cheaper than most other waterproof alternatives. Tested it (without the phone) underwater for a half-hour. It held up just fine. I could only hold my breath for a couple of minutes though… I must be doing it wrong.

Some more stuff, recently picked up:

Star Wars Scene Maker allows you to position characters, objects and cameras in a 3D environment, then record a movie of it. Way too much work to set things up for the results you get (and of course, you can't do much without IAPs). Deleted it shortly after installing it.

Top Gear: Stunt School Revolution - Sort of like a Top Gear themed Jet Car Stunts. Jump your car, crash into stuff. It's okay - nothing spectacular.

Tides Near Me - Free - Went on vacation recently, and wanted to know the local tides. Doesn't seem to have very complete lists, although that depends on whatever source it's pulling its data from. Interface is a bit clunky and dated, but it works.

My Tide Times - Seems to use Maps (or Google?) to locate the tide times you want to look at. Nicer interface that Tides Near Me. But again, you can't always find the tide table you want.

Monument Valley - A very cool isometric puzzle game. Great graphics and sounds, cool concept. The sort of videogame M.C. Escher would have made.

Easy Writer Lite - Needed a text editor so I could do some writing on my iPad. This was free, and worked very well.

Also, while on vacation I played Tiny Death Star. Quite a bit, actually. While cute for its take on Star Wars, it's nowhere near as good a game as Mega Mall Story. Tiny Death Star doesn't have nearly the depth of MMS. You can only build vertically, with one elevator, so it becomes very tedious scrolling up and down all the time, and there's not as much variety in what you build and how you manipulate your resources. After awhile all you end up doing is just restocking items once or twice a day, as the times (and costs) to build new levels skyrocket in an attempt to get you to buy more IAP "bux" to hurry the game along (I did once - buying a bundle that included an elevator upgrade). So adding new levels to the game (arguably the best part) becomes less frequent, more expensive, and because of all of the scrolling, more annoying. MMS is a lot more involving and fun to play. Too bad Disney didn't choose MMS to be the basis of their Star Wars game instead. Mega Death Star Story would have been awesome. Meanwhile, the novelty of TDS has largely worn off. Maybe I'll go back and start up a new game of MMS instead. It's been awhile.

Not a whole lot going on in the app world. At least, not much I've been paying attention to.

Picked up Saturday Morning RPG after a price drop for the Deluxe version. It's an RPG which thrusts you into the world of Saturday Morning TV from the 80's (using non-copyright-infriging parodies). It's kind of a cute idea, but I watched Saturday Morning TV in the 70's, so it doesn't quite resonate with me. I like the concept though.

Also downloaded Epic Zen Garden, which was one of the iOS 8 demos they showed at WWDC. And that's all it is - a demo. It's a nice demo, with interactive trees, gravel, fish and water. But there's no game here, and after a minute or two, I was done with it.

I just haven't had a lot of time to play games in the last couple of months. Usually during commercial breaks I'll play a game or two of Top Gear: Race The Stig (since it requires almost no effort), or Tiny Death Star (again - minimal effort required). I'm at the point in TDS where you just tap a bunch of times once or twice a day to restock, and add levels when you sock away enough money. This is where modern "gameplay" has gone? At this point, I'm more curious if the game eventually ends than in actually playing it. So I'll eventually plod away at building all of the Imperial levels, and hopefully some Rebels will come along and blow the whole thing up after I'm done. :D
