new TiVo Mega - 6 tuners, 24 TB storage

TiVo announces TiVo Mega, a rackmount DVR with six tuners and 24TB

The new TiVo can record up to 4,000 hours of HD or 26,000 hours of SD. Price hasn't been set, but they're estimating it to be around $5,000.

It sounds like a lot, but as a comparison my setup with 4 tuners and 5.4TB of storage cost $3084. Granted I have gone a little overboard ;) - the Drobo + drives was $1515, I could have easily for something like this 6TB raid drive that currently goes for $550 (don't know what it was back in 2012, but it was probably more). The appeal of the Drobo is the ease of adding more storage over time.

My cableco offers the Cisco 9865HD - which has 8 tuners & 1TB of storage. But the real advantage is you can network in additional STBs so record once & watch on another TV.

OTOH, I has 3 of the older 2 tuner HD PVRs - one for each TV, so I have to plan where I want to watch stuff. Not as much storage space, but that does mean I can't let stuff sit unwatched forever. But the new STBs don't autoselect between 720p & 1080i, so I'll keep my old boxes.

Yeah, the TiVo Mega works with the TiVo mini for watching the content on other sets in the house. I wonder if the Mega even hooks up to a TV consider it's made for a server rack.

My folks have Dish and mom loves using the Joey to watch shows on other sets in the house. She'll often pause something on the set in the living room then resume watching it in bed.
