The Olympics and stuff

I'm still tired from typing out that XBox/PS3 thing, so I'll make this short. ;)Late-night Olympics are much more interesting than the daytime stuff. I've seen enough downhill skiing and figure skating to last a lifetime. The sports they show late at night are usually the ones they figure nobody will watch. Like the biathlon and curling. Both are pretty interesting sports. But I guess neither is "flashy" enough for prime time.Right now I'm watching women's curling.I don't really understand curling much, but some of those players are cute! And they can really work those brooms, too.Of course, I mean that with the utmost respect.Oh, and I guess they have men's curling too.Anyway...I got a color rough approved from Zach on the Four-Play label, so I'll be working on that for the time being. I've got a couple of different approaches that I'm going to try with it. One's 3D, and one's 2D. 3D may be easier to get the perspective correct, but sometimes it's hard to get the textures to look right.I'll probably also start in on the Juno First sprites. They don't look like they'll take all that long to do.Also, I've got some more graphics to convert for LadyBug. However, I don't actually know what they look like yet. I'm going to have to cheat my way to that part of the game. :ponder:

Women's curling is fast becoming my favorite Olympic sport. The US team is attractive, which doesn't hurt, but mainly I'm sick of snowboarding and "extreme sports" and all that crap. Curling rules. If only it snowed/iced in Memphis often enough to play.

You just like hearing them shout "hard!", don't you? :) I watched a fair amount of curling when I was in Canada, but I still don't know the rules. With those brooms, it's the closest thing we've got to Quidditch.

Nathan's Four-Play label is looking great, everyone. I'll probably ask him to debut it when the software is nearly finished, sometime before the summer. But if you have been following Nathan's blog, you can get a good idea what it looks like.

So... a couple more Olympic sports that caught my attention.

First is Skeleton.. Someone decided that the Luge wasn't insanely dangerous enough, so they decided to start going down the track head-first. This seems like a really good way to have your head impaled onto your spine. Perhaps that's where the name came from. I still like the Luge better. What I'd really like to see though is one where they go down the track feet-first, but laying face-down. They could call it "Blind Luge" or something.

The other sport is - and I'm not making this up - Snowboardcross. Several snowboarders go down a track at the same time and race for the finish line. Now that may sound exciting - like downhill skiing - but it's not. Instead of a fast, steep, dangerous course, they go down something that reminds me for all of the world like one of those giant slides they have at state fairs. This almost takes the prize for Most Ridiculous Winter Olympics Sport away from Ice Dancing (which is just about the winter equivalent of either Synchronized Swimming or Rhythmic Gymnastics).

Which got me thinking... why not have Synchronized Swimming at the Winter Olympics? In a partially-frozen lake? The teeth chattering alone would make it worth watching.

Yes, it doesn't look exciting to me too. Usually the one wins which stays out of trouble. There should at least be a rematch, so those who got kicked out in the first race can have their revenge. That would probably make it much more exciting. :)

But I am not really a fan of any snowboard sports, so I might be a bit biased.

Two of them are sisters too... which never really flipped my a/b difficulty switch, but I hear some guys are kind of into that thing. I have to say the US curling team in Salt Lake was much hotter.

Also, I haven't watched this year's Olympics much, so correct me if I'm wrong, but does anyone know why there isn't a Pakistani bobsled team? We could even send them Drew Carey, since John Candy is no longer available to coach. Bin Laden could come and tell his eldest son he has to go to school to be a doctor, which the son would refuse to do, and they crash in turn 14 during the final run. With the somewhat lackluster response to Cool Runnings, I always just knew there would be a sequel. Afghanistan, anyone?

EDIT- and as a side note, I once read shows with "X" in the title are rated 12% higher on average than other shows in the same genre when running during like time slots.

Thanks - I will soon have some free time to rewrite the kernel, and hopefully get the basic game mechanics in place.

A "first" look: :)  Still to do: different sizes, some animation

Wow - looks great to me so far!

Thanks,

Chris
