Homebrews not currently in development, but not completely dead, either:

  • 2600 Toolbox (tentative title)
Description: At some point, I need to make a Stupid Game Ideas! entry for this. The idea is to vastly expand upon the idea of the Test Cart, including color calibration patterns, hardware tests, sound tests, and various patterns for checking color combinations, flickering, and so forth. The cart can be used to test consoles, set up TVs, and be used by homebrewers and artists while developing new games.
Development status: I have a list of things I'd like to see in it, I just need to write it all up, then hope a developer finds it interesting enough to pursue. ;)

Inactive Homebrew projects:

* As always, project names that are in quotes are code-names, and not the actual titles.

I see that Project Bruce has been removed from the list - this is still something that I would like to do one day, and should be much easier using CDF.

It doesn’t look like the bus stuffing issues will be resolved any time soon, so Black Squirrell is postponed indefinitely.

I’m looking forward to the restart of your high quality home brew reviews!

Chris

I'd like to see Project Bruce come back at some point. Of course if you want to work on it, I'd be happy to help. ;) But the potential for a C&D on that is pretty high, which is why I haven't been doing anything with it.

I thought bus stuffing had been sorted out by ZackAttack. :?

As for the reviews - hoping to restart those soon. I may have to skip over a few games that I really haven't wanted to play. That's what's been delaying it.

The bus stuffing fix by ZackAttack is quite difficult to use - not really possible with the BUS driver that I previously wrote. I'm still hoping for a tweak to the Harmony hardware, or that the new UnoCart 2600, will make this unnecessary ...

Update:

  • 9-13-18: "Linus and Lucy" officially announced to be John Champeau's Wizard of Wor Arcade. This is an all-new port, not a hack. It takes full advantage of CDF bankswitching as well as a new multi-tap adapter which will allow for two players and an AtariVox to be plugged in at the same time. Why "Linus and Lucy"? When I was developing the sprites, I had placed them all in a mock-up of the maze, running in place. John mentioned that it looked for all the world like the Peanuts gang dancing in A Charlie Brown Christmas. :)

Update:

  • 10-19-18: Moved "Fun With Sawdust" to inactive projects. "Fun With Sawdust" was the code name for BurgerTime Arcade. However, since Chaotic Grill (another BurgerTime remake) has returned to active development, BurgerTime Arcade is on hold. And if you're wondering about the code name, just do a Google search for "sawdust" and "McDonald's". ;)

Updates:

  • 11-2-18: "Otis" was revealed to be John Champeau's work-in-progress port of Elevator Action during a recent ZeroPage Homebrew episode. The game is on hold for now, since Bus Stuffing is required to make the current version work, but Bus Stuffing has compatibility issues with some 2600s. And really... it shouldn't be too hard to figure out why "Otis" was the code name. ;)
  • 11-2-18: "YAUCG" was revealed to be John Champeau's work-in-progress port of Cosmic Avenger during a recent interview at PRGE with ZeroPage Homebrew. "YAUCG" is simply "Yet Another Unreleased Coleco Game". :D It was put aside in favor of completing Scramble and Super Cobra Arcade.

Updates:

  • 11-4-18: Mappy is now for sale in the AtariAge store. It's entry has been moved to Completed Homebrews.
  • 11-22-18: Created instruction sheets for Trak-Ball hacks (which are available in the AtariAge store).
  • 11-29-18: Added a new homebrew project: Zoo Keeper. A new Champ Games arcade port, John has already posted a teaser image online, and this was also mentioned during ZeroPage Homebrew's episode last night. This one didn't even stay secret long enough for me to give it a code name! ;)

Updates:

  • 2-23-19: Mappy won the 2018 Atari Awards for: Best Programming, Best Technical Achievement, Best Packaging, Best Graphics, Best Music and Sound and Best Homebrew!
  • 3-23-19: Added Amoeba Jump (I'm working on the packaging artwork).
  • 4-2-19: Added new homebrew project, code-named "Water Softener" (game graphics).
  • 4-2-19: Added new homebrew project, code-named "Copyright Infringement" (game graphics).
  • 4-2-19: Aardvark: Revised label artwork in progress.

Yet I hear today that an Intellivision game with your graphics artwork is about to be released. :-D

But yes, perhaps you only gave permission to reuse the graphics, not actively worked on them?

That's correct. I'm not directly involved in any Intellivision homebrew development, but Óscar is certainly welcomed to reuse the graphics I made for the 2600 version.

Update:

  • 9-16-19: "Neville" officially announced as a Champ Games port of Gorf! Gorf Arcade will have all five screens and AtariVox voices.

Why "Neville"? Much like "Lightman", he was a character in a videogame-themed movie. In this case, he was Mayor Neville (played by classic character actor Logan Ramsey) in the movie Joysticks. And yes - he played Gorf in the film.
