New Mac mini

SpiceWare

I've upgraded my Mac mini in preparations of getting a 4K TV. My original mini would support 4K, but only at a 30Hz refresh rate. Timing for this appears to be good as a couple times last week my HDTV turned on with the convergence seriously out of whack - the Mac's white menu bar looked like a multicolored grin. Each time a power cycle corrected it, but the repeated occurrence suggests the TV's starting to go out.

Specs:

  • 3.2GHz 6 core i7
  • 8GB RAM
  • 512GB SSD
  • Intel UHD Graphics 630
  • Gigabit Ethernet

So basically I maxed the CPU and picked the middle SSD. RAM is user upgradeable, so I'll increase it at a later date.

Everything came over, though I did encounter a few minor hiccups:

  • Took a couple of reboots to get the Drobo recognized, it requires extensions to be installed and they were blocked due to increased system security
  • No more optical digital audio out the headphone jack, was able to utilize the SPDIF Optical out on my HDMI -> Component Video adapter
  • No built in hardware for IR remotes, found this late last night will most likely order that after I've done some more research.

At the moment my Drobo's hooked up via USB 3.0 rather than Thunderbolt as the port has changed. Seems to be recording OK via USB, though I'm experiencing laggy mouse movement whenever a lot of data is being recorded. Will pick up the Thunderbolt 3 -> Thunderbolt 2[& 1] adapter. Long term solution I'll pick up a new Drobo 8D which uses the latest Thunderbolt 3 port plus has bays for 8 drives rather than 5. Dad wants my original Drobo.

SwitchResX came over and the new mini correctly came up using 1080i when I connected it to my old rear projection HDTV. It's on HiDPI for better legibility, with this setting it's sending a 1080i signal but treating it as 960x540 when rendering TEXT and the UI. Video and photo content still use the full 1920x1080 to show maximum detail on the display.

I like the new dark mode of Mojave, though some of the older programs don't utilize it and thus look out of place.

No more optical digital audio out the headphone jack

Hadn't thought about that yet. That's annoying since we have a setup at work that uses the optical out from a Mini. Now I'll have to re-kajigger the thing when we upgrade.
