So we're down to 16 great sports games on the Atari 2600. It was an exciting first round.

Some great match-ups coming up:

  1. BMX Airmaster (TNT Games) vs California Games (Epyx)
  2. Enduro (Activision) vs Winter Games (Epyx)
  3. Decathlon (Activision) vs Skiing (Activision)
  4. Tennis (Activision) vs My Golf (HES)
  5. Pole Position (Atari) vs Realsports Boxing (Atari)
  6. Realsports Volleyball (Atari) vs Pete Rose Baseball (Absolute)
  7. Super Football (Atari) vs Summer Games (Epyx)
  8. Track&Field (Atari) vs Super Challenge Baseball (M-Network)

Are we going to see car racing game making it to the next round? Will one of the athletic games survive into the next round? Will America's favourite sport make it home?

So let's not delay any further and start the next round!

1. BMX Airmaster (TNT Games) vs California Games (Epyx)

Two radical games make it to the next round (goodbye Skate Boardin'). Both have great sounds and excellent graphics, coming in the later phase of the 2600 lifetime. Luckily we can make some direct comparisons: BMX Airmaster does it stunts on the ramp, and CG has pretty much the same game on a skateboard, and plus 3 other games! It's a tough and neither one gives an inch and it goes all the way.

Winner by unanimous decision: California Games.

2. Enduro (Activision) vs Winter Games (Epyx)

This face-offs are getting pretty intense. In one corner we have one of the most popular games in the history of the console, and on the other side we have a veteran from the computer platforms. Enduro bring in a straight-forward game with awesome gameplay and blazes through the foggy roads. Winter Games weathers the cold snap but ultimately just is trying too hard, swinging wildly and is exhausted in the second round.

Winner by KO in the 3rd round: Enduro!!

3. Decathlon (Activision) vs Skiing (Activision)

Yes, we have an Activision deathmatch here between one of the most polished offerings versus a veteran from the silver age of 2600 gaming. Decathlon just vaults through all obstacles while Skiing just runs out of steam is not able to slalom, wiping out completely after providing a simple affair. Putting a brave fight to get this far, Skiing's corner throws in the towel.

Winner by TKO in the 2nd round: Decathlon!!

4. Tennis (Activision) vs My Golf (HES)

Tennis doesn't feel confident facing against the flash graphics, extensive gameplay and variety of club selection. Tennis tries really hard to keep the rally of punches and jabs going, but they don't do any damage at all with My Golf. My Golf delivers a hit that would carry most to 280 yards and puts Tennis right on the canvas.

Winner by KO in the 1st round: My Golf!!!

5. Pole Position (Atari) vs Realsports Boxing (Atari)

And now Atari has to put two titles against each other. You would hope that Realsports Boxing would have the inside information on the sweet science, but there's nothing you can do when 600 horsepower just charges at you and you get trapped in the slipstream. Pole Position just keeps enticing the player to try another round to improve your score, while Boxing just becomes another curiosity on the pile of games.

Winner by TKO in the 2nd round: Pole Position!!

6. Realsports Volleyball (Atari) vs Pete Rose Baseball (Absolute)

Volleyball looks nervous here, one of the latter games of the Atari heydays it knows it has its work cut out against Pete Rose Baseball. The graphics and gameplay are way on the side of Pete Rose Baseball, there's nothing that Realsports Volleyball can offer to stop the pummeling. It puts up a brave fight, but after swinging for the fences, it simply strikes out.

Winner by TKO in the 2nd round: Pete Rose Baseball!!

7. Super Football (Atari) vs Summer Games (Epyx)

This is a tough fight, an innovating Football game on the VCS versus one of the heavier games released at the end of the console's lifespan. Football is able to run a solid offence and just doesn't give Summer Games any room. SG counters with some impressive graphics and sounds, but ultimately it's the gameplay that triumphs in this match-up.

Winner by unanimous decision: Super Football.

8. Track&Field (Atari) vs Super Challenge Baseball (M-Network)

This bout will certainly be entertaining. Track&Field has the impressive technical details and great gameplay that mirrors its arcade offering. SCB just cannot cope, and commits a series of errors. This does not bode well for SCB.

Winner by TKO in the 1st round: Track&Field

There were some excellent fights in the Round of 16, seeing some titans fall to the wayside like Summer Games, Winter Games, and the evergreen Tennis.

So for the next round we will have:

  • California Games (Epyx)
  • Enduro (Activision)
  • Decathlon (Activision)
  • My Golf (HES)
  • Pole Position (Atari)
  • Pete Rose Baseball (Absolute)
  • Super Football (Atari)
  • Track&Field (Atari)

We have two racing games, two athletics games and some heavy-duty contenders left. This will be very exciting to see the quarter-finals!
