Christmas Carol: A Short Story - Part XXXIII

I just finished writing chapter 14, the penultimate chapter to the story, where the final climactic confrontation between Carol and her foes takes place. I'm quite happy with it. I think I need to re-read it a few more times and tighten and polish the narrative a little here and there, but overall, I'm satisfied with how it turned out.

It has all the elements I wanted -- not only the narrative elements of the interplay between the characters, but the tone and excitement of a final epic battle. At nine pages it's also the second longest chapter in the book.

Did I tell you that I really like this story? To me its fascinating -- and I'm not just saying that because I wrote it. Well, perhaps there's an element of pride and ownership in there, but for the most part, I have to tell you that I feel like a passive reader just experiencing the story as it unfolds. Every time I re-read a section, instead of thinking, "wow! I'm so good, I liked how I wrote that"; I think, "wow! That was awesome! Tell me some more!" :)

Plus, it's about Christmas, which is my favorite time of the year -- and I'm already filled with the Christmas Spirit!

Anyway, I've come up with a title for the last concluding chapter: "The Homecoming." As the title suggests, Carol will finish up her adventure and return home to a hero's welcome. Then, after a brief celebration (in which the elves christen her "Christmas Carol" for saving Christmas), it's back to work loading Santa's sleigh and completing their tasks on their most important night of the year.

That should take about five or six pages. Right now we stand at 73 pages, the entire thing should come close to 80 in total. Not bad for a short story. Not bad at all.

We're almost there now ... almost done. I expect to complete the story by the end of the week. After that I'll draw some illustrations and its off to Staples to get a color printed copy for my sweet granddaughters, just in time for Christmas. I plan to bind it myself, scrapbook-style, with hard cardboard covers tied with colorful ribbons, perfectly proper and fitting for our favorite girl elf. :)

See ya',
-dZ.
