SAM1982 does HAL9000

youTube's A.I. random clip recommendation algorithm has been recommending clips from 2001: A Space Odyssey.  The movie was released in 1968.  It would be another 14 years before The Software Automatic Mouth(SAM) for the Atari 400/800 from Don't Ask, Inc. was released. But what if, SAM could have been used for the voice of the HAL9000 computer?

Now I know….kind of.  A voice over was recorded using SAM with the Reciter option. The text to speech program is OK but using SAM's phonetic alphabet would have greatly improve the speech at the expense of the time needed to program the phonetic spelling for each word and using the Speed and Pitch controls for expression.

The scene is where Dave is deactivating HAL.  Dave pulls the memory cards out of the memory card slots in the memory room until HAL slowly looses its memory.

If anyone syncs the audio to the video, I would like to see it.  I lost my desire to work with video long ago and I'm not interested enough to find the free software to do it myself.

The steps I used to create the  voice over and the BASIC file for use with SAM are below.

  1. Record the scene's audio from the Kindle to the Olympus.  Quality is not of any importance.
  2. Transcribe a script.
  3. Boot up Sam on the Atari 130XE - Requires Translator to run Sam with Reciter
  4. Create BASIC program to read DATA statements, speak and a delay between phrases
  5. Type phrases into DATA statements
  6. Import original scene into track 1 of avalible audio recording and editing software. (Audiotonic used)
  7. Record Sam program output into track 2.
  8. Split track 2 into sections between phrases and position phrases to match track 1.
  9. Use the speed and pitch Effect to adjust SAM voice during deactivation.
  10. Track 3 is the background noise and Dave's breathing. Copy and past from sections of track 1.
  11. Track 4 - copy Dave's voice from track 3 and paste to position to match track 1.
  12. Export Track 2-3-4 into an MP3 file.

Dos 2.0 ,Autorun.sys(Sam and Reciter), DEACTIV8.BAS, RECTEST.BAS(makes sure SAM installed)
