Oh sure... you may love Anime, but do you love it as much as these people?

Well, in that case, you've likely been at the 2008 Anime Expo. Even more likely, you're into Cosplay.

And frankly, you're creeping me out just a little right now.

That said, it's time to check out the Expo's Cosplay photo galleries, and play everyone's favorite game...

Dude... or Chick?

Play along at home! Just peruse the galleries below, and ask yourself whenever you see someone festooned in all their costumed splendor, "What is that?! Dude... or Chick?"

It's not as easy as you might think. ;)

Have fun! :D

I never liked anime with few exceptions like Saint Seya, Evangelion and now Death Note (this last I recomend).

Anyway have many of these anime events with tons of cosplays in my country, the most interesting cosplay I see are two girls, one Chun-li and another Vanessa from king of fighters, very sexy, and most funny was a Card Box from Metal Gear Solid with a guy inside walking around. lol

Never been into Anime at all. I don't understand what's all about it. Even though there is a Japanese Comic shop less than 10m from my door!

That shop is probably more specialized to sell Mangas then though... :)

I love Animes. Half of my childhood was spent watching Heidi, Sindbad, Captain Future, etc... :ponder:

What it's all about depends on which show/movie you happen to be watching. There's as much variety in anime as in any animation, although you have to dig a bit to find it sometimes.

As with anything, there's good and bad. Some stuff is really interesting, some of it is agonizingly boring. Some is very thoughtful and intelligently written, some of it is mind-numbing kiddie-fodder.

I don't like all anime by any stretch, and I stayed away from it for years. I was addicted to Speed Racer as a kid, and later Star Blazers, and a few other series. I would have really gotten into Robotech in the early 80's, but it was hard to catch it when it was on, and finding videotapes of it at the time was impossible. After that, I stayed away from it until just a few years ago.

In recent years, my favorite series are R.O.D. the TV, Fooly Cooly, Cowboy Bebop, and Paranoia Agent (although I only own R.O.D., and haven't seen all of the others in their entirety yet). I've also watched some Fullmetal Alchemist which looks interesting (although I already know how it ends), and Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo - which is like a parody of everything anime, with so much bizarre stuff thrown in, that it's pretty-much impossible to describe. But it is extremely funny - if you get what it is they're making fun of, that is.

Some series that are popular that I don't like, are Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex (some interesting episodes, but too much incessant talking), Inuyasha and Naruto (both have extremely annoying main characters). I also hate Pokemon and series like it, that are designed solely for the purpose of selling stuff to 8-year-olds. There's also a lot of series that I've watched a few episodes of, and just wasn't interested in, for whatever reason. I tend to get tired of the giant fighting robot stuff pretty quickly now, since there's so much of it.

The trick with anime series, is that you pretty-much have to watch them from the beginning to get what's going on. Some of them are rather unforgiving about missing an episode, too. It's easy to get hopelessly lost, if you come in on the middle of something. Some series are a little bit better about that than others though.

And this doesn't even begin to cover movies. Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service (and other Miyazaki films)... the list goes on and on. (I never got into Akira though. Visually interesting, but just didn't care for the characters.)

Nope. Although I have heard good things about it. The thing is, I know that if I'm going to watch something like that, I've got to commit to watching it regularly, and when it started airing, I just didn't have the time. I don't have a DVR either, so recording it isn't an option right now. Maybe someday.

Same here, loved Speed Racer and Star Blazers as a kid. I was introduced to Robotech in college - we used to have a weekly "Star Trek" gathering at my place and one friend started bringing over VHS tapes of Robotech he'd recorded and we'd watch that before Star Trek.

Of the other things Nathan listed I really liked Cowboy Bepop, and also didn't care for Ghost in the Shell.

Others I like:

Akira - most people I've shown it to really like it until it gets to the ending when they go "huh?". I have this one on a Criterion Collection Laser Disk and will most likely upgrade it to the Blu-ray version when it comes out.

Tenchi Muyo - the OVA(original video animation - aka direct to video) is great, though I'm not a big fan of the later TV series. This series is the one that caused me to buy a Laser Disk player because I was able to find the series on laser disk but not VHS.

Macross Plus - part of the Macross series, of which Robotech is kinda sorta part of. Music plays a big part in this, I have a few music CDs from it. Check out the Sharon Apple Concert at YouTube. Another one on Laser Disk. About half my Anime is on Laser Disk, the other half on DVD.

Serial Experiments Lain - Kinda Matrixy, though it preceeds Neo and Gang.

A couple others worth your time are Haibane-Renmei and The Irresponsible Captain Tylor.

Anime, Manga,... whatever. :)

Though Captain Future was ok (back then).

Animes are movies/TV series, mangas are comics :ponder:

And how do you call a manga movie? :)

That's just anime again then :D

Speaking of which, besides the Miyazaki flics did I also enjoy Vampire Hunter D. The long "cinema" one, not the older one.

I've liked a lot of anime I've seen: Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Last Exile, Serial Experiments Lain, Stellvia of the Universe, Yokohama Kaidaishi Kikou, Future Boy Conan, Star Blazers, Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Death Note, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Lucky Star, Kanon, Air, Shuffle, Fate Stay Night, Claymore, Nodame Cantibile and The Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Sadly, I think I find myself drawn more to High School Dramas and Magical Girl Transformation stuff. Since there are many, many bad examples of these, I find myself spending more time filtering out what I don't want to watch than actually watching anything. :ponder:

My family and I just finished watching Future Boy Conan which starts in JULY 2008 when SUPER ELECTRO MAGNETIC BOMBS DESTROY THE WORLD!!!! I'll feel a lot better after we make it through this month.

Miyazaki is good stuff, too. My daughter and I just watched Spirited Away again, today (English dub, so I don't have to read her the subtitles.)

Cosplay scares me somewhat. When we were in Korea we went to a SoftMax convention. If you are familiar with the art of Hyung-Tae Kim, you might be surprised to find that there are plenty of women/girls who can actually dress up and look like the women/girl in this guy's art. It's quite a sight for sore eyes. It isn't a question of Chick or Dude as much as it is Legal or Jail Bait. I'm married anyway, so it's a moot question to begin with, but it was like being drawn into a trance...anyway, Cosplay. *shudder*

I'm not worried... we've been without a moon for almost nine years now, and we're still doin' fine. :ponder:

No Moon? Holy Cow, I don't think I ever knew that! It has suddenly occurred to me that I've never seen a single episode of Space:1999, UFO (never even heard of UFO) or Blake 7. Thank doG, I've at least seen some Doctor Who (though I can't say I've ever seen a full story arc)...jeez, I've been remiss in the British part of my Geek inculturation.Space: 1999 was always one of those shows I thought I'd get around to and now its too late!!! (well, too late in that I've really lost interest, kinda like how I feel about Sliders now...)

Oh hey... the 2011 Anime Expo is on. And that means, it's time once again for everybody's favorite game...

Dude... or chick?

Just head over to IGN's Cosplay Battle, click through the pics, and ask yourself, "Is that a dude... or a chick?" :o
