Two very empty islands...

The world of entertainment lost two legends this week...

Ricardo Montalban passed away at 88.

Patrick McGoohan passed away at 80.

To me, Ricardo Montalban will best be remembered as Khan. Coincidentally, I watched Star Trek II last night - it was showing in HD on U-Verse's "free preview" week - and I relished his performance. He was the only villain to really match Kirk's bravado. Space opera at its finest. Most articles today I've seen refer to his stint on Fantasy Island. Of course, like everyone else back-in-the-day, I watched that show too. It was brainless fluff, but Montalban always managed to bring a sense of class, dignity and mystery to Mr. Roarke. In recent years he'd done some voice-over work as a villain on Disney's Kim Possible. His voice was immediately recognizable, and on several occasions where another actor filled in, he was sorely missed. Always entertaining. Always seemingly the very definition of a perfect gentleman. Even when trying to kill off Captain Kirk.

Patrick McGoohan created the iconic series The Prisoner. It's one of the few complete series I own on DVD. I first became hooked on it in the 80's when it first was released on VHS, and a friend of mine and I rented as many episodes as we could find (and a VCR from Rent-A-Center, because they were too expensive to buy at the time), and spent a weekend camped out in front of the TV with far too much junk food, soaking it all in. The subject of endless discussions, it's a remarkable series, and innovative in content, story telling and filmmaking. Last time I taught editing in college, I used a number of examples from the series in class. McGoohan was a tremendously gifted actor, writer and director. Even outside The Prisoner, he always brought a unique personality and intensity to the characters he played, that were solely his. The series is being re-made, but without McGoohan's vision, it will merely be just another TV series.

I just watched Star Trek II, for the first time, a week ago. I wasn't real impressed. It seemed, basically, like a Star Trek episode, only longer - complete with cheesy lines, overwrought storyline, and bad special effects. It was fairly enjoyable, but I was expecting/hoping for much more.

But that's what makes it so good. :)

Just the first time watching it? Not much of a Star Trek fan I'm guessing? At the time it came out, it was the Trek movie everyone had been waiting for. ST The Motion Picture was a disaster, and we had to wait another excruciating three years for them to bring out ST II. Compared to the first, this one really felt like Star Trek, but also had an epic quality that a movie really needed to have. Plus the battle of the overacting leads (Shatner and Montalban) really made it fun to watch. Was it "good" acting? Probably not. But it was sure entertaining. :)

For what it's worth, I don't consider myself all that much of a Star Trek fan. I'm a fan of good Star Trek, but I'm not a fan of all of it by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm not a huge Star Trek fan...it was before my time, really, though I've seen my fair share of reruns. :)

And I've seen the Star Trek movie where they travel back in time to the present, though its been a long while since I saw it. I remember something about a whale in a giant glass tank also. :)

Star Trek IV

The scene where Scotty is talking into a mouse is a classic. :)

I'm not a big Trekkie either but I think perhaps the significance of that story may be lost on you if you're not familiar with the backstory. I remember when the film first came out and, of all people, my mom was raving about the movie. She was always a closet sci-fi fan growing up and explained to me that The Wrath of Khan was actually an extension of an episode of the series from many years earlier. For fans of the original series it was kind of a big deal at the time to see the story come full circle.

Montalban rocks as Senor Senior on Kim Possible. He was also pretty funny in the Spy Kids movies. Of course, he'll always be Kahn and Mr. Rourke to me.

Two empty islands. Hehe. I didn't get that at first.

Another great bit of voice casting was Eartha Kitt as Yzma in The Emperor's New School (spin-off from the movie The Emperor's New Groove). Very funny series in large part due to her character, and one of Disney's more underrated movies as well. Sadly, she passed away in December, although I think the series had ended its run already.
