Two very empty islands...
The world of entertainment lost two legends this week...
Ricardo Montalban passed away at 88.
Patrick McGoohan passed away at 80.
To me, Ricardo Montalban will best be remembered as Khan. Coincidentally, I watched Star Trek II last night - it was showing in HD on U-Verse's "free preview" week - and I relished his performance. He was the only villain to really match Kirk's bravado. Space opera at its finest. Most articles today I've seen refer to his stint on Fantasy Island. Of course, like everyone else back-in-the-day, I watched that show too. It was brainless fluff, but Montalban always managed to bring a sense of class, dignity and mystery to Mr. Roarke. In recent years he'd done some voice-over work as a villain on Disney's Kim Possible. His voice was immediately recognizable, and on several occasions where another actor filled in, he was sorely missed. Always entertaining. Always seemingly the very definition of a perfect gentleman. Even when trying to kill off Captain Kirk.
Patrick McGoohan created the iconic series The Prisoner. It's one of the few complete series I own on DVD. I first became hooked on it in the 80's when it first was released on VHS, and a friend of mine and I rented as many episodes as we could find (and a VCR from Rent-A-Center, because they were too expensive to buy at the time), and spent a weekend camped out in front of the TV with far too much junk food, soaking it all in. The subject of endless discussions, it's a remarkable series, and innovative in content, story telling and filmmaking. Last time I taught editing in college, I used a number of examples from the series in class. McGoohan was a tremendously gifted actor, writer and director. Even outside The Prisoner, he always brought a unique personality and intensity to the characters he played, that were solely his. The series is being re-made, but without McGoohan's vision, it will merely be just another TV series.
