Flash Cartridges & Other Hardware

I'm obsessed with video games and homebrew, but I don't have enough space to keep all my games and consoles out. My (somewhat expensive) solution is flash cartridges. Here is a list of the flash cartridges that I own, those I plan to get, and some I wish existed.

Have:

Atari 2600 - Krokocart, Starpath Supercharger

Vectrex - VecFlash

Vic-20 - Megacart

ColecoVision - VecFlash Adapter

Nintendo Entertainment System - Powerpak

Super Nintendo Entertainment System - Powerpak

Gameboy Advance - EFA Linker

Nintendo DS - CycloDS, TopToyDS

Want:

Commodore 64 - 1541Ultimate (ordered and paid for in February... waiting on shipment)

Sega Genesis - Everdrive (waiting to order)

Intellivision - Cuttle Cart 3 (Chad doesn't accept Paypal, I don't keep a checkbook (after having been ripped off), and I hate using money orders)

Turbo GrafX 16 - I haven't really researched what is out there. Of course, it might help if I score myself a console first. :P

Wish:

TI-99/4a Flash Cartridge

Of those I have, the only one I cannot recommend highly is the EFA Linker. While I was able to get it working, I didn't have any luck loading multiple games onto it. Still, I can't complain much because I bought it for only 10 bucks on Dealextreme.

So, what flash cartridges and similar solutions do you use and/or recommend?

...

On occasion, I also pick up other homebrew hardware peripherals to use with my consoles. Here is a very short list of those I can remember off the top of my head:

Atari 2600 - AtariVox, Atari Memory Card, SMS Lightgun Adapter

The ease of use of the Harmony Cart is certainly enticing... and the price is decent. I may get one yet.

I finally went back and looked at the DC link you gave me. I NEED one of those!

I have an Starpath Supercharger for the 2600, a CuttleCart 2 for the 7800 and the Homebrew Channel for the Wii. I've considered getting a DS flash cart, mostly for playing NES/SNES/GB/GBC games. And if I had more time for homebrew programming, I'd want a Vecflash & a Vectrex to go with.

I forgot to mention that I have a modified Supercharger... somewhere. I don't think I've used it since the day I got it.

Now and then I think I should just sell everything. Doesn't that sound crazy? I don't have or make a lot of time to play any of the games I have. I'm just so darn obsessed with them.

Heh, I have the same problem. Too many toys, not enough time. Yesterday I saw a guy selling an Asteroids in a mini-cab for C$350. I almost decided to get it except:

  1. I really shouldn't spend $350 on a game, no matter how cool or good the deal.
  2. I don't really have the space to store one, even a mini-cab.
  3. I don't have time to play/work on/finish my Tempest cab, why do I need to spend $$ on something else I won't have time for?

That being said, I think I spent an hour and a half playing Civilization Revolution last night. Time I really should have spent doing other stuff.

Now I need to get me a Tempest cabinet. Gosh, I'm jealous.

I have nowhere to put an arcade cabinet if I did, but I can't guarantee I wouldn't snatch it up if I caught the perfect deal.

I limit myself to only purchasing/keeping games I like, however. I can only imagine how the clutter would be if I didn't!

The Tempest cabinet I rescued from the curb several years back. The monitor was missing so I squeezed in a 21" PC monitor and set it up for MAME. The plan was to set it up with a front end to play games which could be played with the original controls. However, while it does play Tempest, the rest of the plan has stalled.

Since I spoke about my bad hoarding habits...

I just noticed a Vectrex pop up in my area on Craigslist (garage sale). I already have a Vectrex, but I had to buy mine from a seller here on Atariage; I have never seen one in the wild. Well, I can't help myself once again... I am going on Saturday to see what the seller wants for it. I'm sorta hoping that this is my big break where it is boxed and they have a bunch of cool peripherals for 30 bucks or something. That's never happened to me before; I'm not going to hold my breath.

You need two in case one of them breaks - those vector monitors won't last forever

Well crap! I just noticed this on Craigslist:

****1982 VECTREX SYSTEM**** - $200 (Hill & Collister)

That's a little bit more than I was willing to spend. I may swing by anyway to take a look... and to drop an offer of 60-80 bucks... should they not find another buyer.

What a sucky way to end the day.

I went over to the yard sale this morning. It was worth it, if only to see the thing in the wild. A young child (12 or 13) was playing the Vectrex when I arrived.

I asked the seller if there were any games besides the built in Minestorm. She told me there weren't. Then I asked her how much she wanted for the machine. She told me that she was asking 200 dollars. Then she asked me if I wanted to try it out. I told her that I already had one at home. I told her that 200 was a little bit out of my range, but if she was interested I'd leave my number and an offer of 70 bucks in case she was unable to sell the Vectrex for 200 dollars. She told me that she hadn't been sure what to charge for it, so she looked it up on eBay. She said that she found a few, but they were boxed and had a couple of games. I told her that having the box jumps the price up quite a bit. She asked me what I had paid for mine. I told her that I paid 60 dollars to someone in an online forum.

She took my number and so I guess I'll see if she calls. The Vectrex was loose, but it had a fairly beat up Minestorm overlay. I didn't test it, but the controller appeared to be fine. The lady was super nice... I almost felt bad that I didn't buy the thing. :)

...

I feel lucky that I got my Vectrex (in great condition and including Clean Sweep, Armor Attack, and Pole Position), for such a deal here on Atariage. I forget who I bought it from (I'm sure it was Mert or Myrtle or something), but THANKS AGAIN!
