DESCRIPTION:\n	In March\, 2013 STar Fleet HQ BBS (SFHQ) is resurrected a

Atari ST BBS). SFHQ originally started around 1993 as the support BBS for
the STARTREK Role Playing Game (RPG) echo on FidoNet.  On April 14\, 20
19\, the SysOp announced that the BBS is now offline due to a hardware fai
lure from a lightning storm. More information on SFHQ's history is availa

DESCRIPTION:\n	api-page1-1.pdf api-page2.pdf\n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	In Cleve
land\, Ohio\, a group of Atari software pirates calling themselves Atari P
irates Incorporated (API) made the front page of the Cleveland Plain Deale
	r on Sunday\, August 4\, 1985. One member\, known as The Dark Knight\, had
even boasted on local BBSs beforehand that the article would prove their
dominance over rival pirate groups.\n\n\n\n	The article\, however\, had mi
xed effects. Non-Atari readers mocked the group after stumbling over terms
like “Happy Disk\,” while rival Commodore groups ridiculed them as ch
ildish.\n\n\n\n	Worse\, the publicity directly led to their downfall. In t
he photo accompanying the article\, a pirate named Dr. Demento appeared be
side a household telephone. Since phones of the time often displayed the n
umber on a tag\, the Feds zoomed in on the photo\, traced the number\, and
quickly identified and busted the group.\n\n	\n\n	Attached are pdfs of th
e two pages that carried the original story.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:\n	On this day in 1983\, the American film \"Wargames\" is r
eleased. \n\n\n\n	WarGames (1983) is about a teen hacker\, David Lightman
\, who accidentally accesses a U.S. military supercomputer\, mistaking it
for a game company. He starts a game called Global Thermonuclear War\, nea
rly triggering WWIII when the system treats it as a real attack. David use
s his modem to autodial phone numbers looking for systems to hack. This te
chnique inspired the term \"wardialing\"\, named after the film\, and was
later used by hackers to scan for active modems.\n\n\n\n	 \n\n

DESCRIPTION:\n	 \n\n\n\n	BBS: The Documentary was released in May 2005.
Produced by Jason Scott\, this 3-DVD documentary set contains many storie
s of the BBS era\, including interviews with pioneers like Ward Christense
n and Randy Suess. It explores the experience of being a SysOp\, Fidonet\,
the underground hacking scene\, the art scene\, the BBS industry in the 1
990s\, and the rise of the Internet that led to the decline of the BBS.\n\
n\n\n	This documentary predates the BBS Renaissance we’re experiencing t
	oday\, so that aspect isn’t covered. Nevertheless\, it’s a fantastic w
atch that captures the rich history of BBSing. A must-see for anyone who w
	as—or still is—into the hobby.\n\n\n\n	 \n\n

DESCRIPTION:\n	On this day\, in 2020\, the Fujinet's WiFi modem support
was declared stable for calling BBSs. Prior to 12/14/2020\, the Fujinet
had trouble staying connected to BBSs\, especially Atari 8-bit BBSs. This
turned out to be caused by a TCP/IP SDK setting in Fujinet's networking la
yer. If a host sends too many one-byte packets (due to the Nagle algorithm
being disabled by the host to improve interactive performance)\, then Fu
jinet's processor\, the ESP32\, does not respond fast enough to them\, and
the host re-sends the packet\, ultimately resulting in a duplicate acknow
ledgement (DUP ACK). The duplicate acknowledgements would lead to dropped
packets or worse\, BBS disconnections\, or race conditions. After spending
about a month combing through Fujinet firmware\, network packets\, and lo
ts of experimentation\, the needle in a haystack was found by yours's trul
	y. An option in the TCP/IP SDK known as CONFIG_LWIP_TCP_QUEUE_OOSEQ\, con
trolled the queuing of packets that are out of sequence\, forcing the ho
st to re-send (which it will anyway)\, but avoiding the duplicate acknowle
dgements. Once this single byte was changed from a 'y' to an 'n' in the Fu
jinet firmware\, the lost packets\, random BBS disconnections\, and race c
onditions ceased. This elusive bug was squashed\, and it was now safe for
users to call BBSs with Fujinet.\n\n	\n\n	To commemorate this milestone\,
we declare December 14th as Fujinet BBS Day. To celebrate\, connect to an
Atari BBS today. Better yet\, connect to it with a Fujinet if you own one.

DESCRIPTION:\n	Just your regular Atari BBS Community Zoom Meet Reminder\
n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	As always\, we meet on the first Sunday and third Frida
y of every month.  The next meeting is Sunday\, December 3rd at 3pm Easte
rn.\n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	No real agenda for this since my work project is in
it's final stages\, but those tend to be the most fun!  (Rumor has it\,
we might have some people showing off some new IGS work!)\n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n
\n	Also\, since the first of the month was a Friday\, the next meeting wil
l be a little earlier\, December 15th at 8pm.  Since that is the deployme
nt for my work project\, I probably won't have a huge agenda planned for t
his either.  However\, the first of January is a Monday\, so our \"First
Sunday\" meeting of the new year will be on January 7th at 3pm Eastern and
will be our Christmas/New Years/Show &amp\; Tell what retro gifts you got
	 (yourself).\n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	(Don't worry\, more reminders will go out

DESCRIPTION:\n	In January 1984\, the Boot Factory Atari BBS goes online
for the first time. Boot Factory has undergone many changes over the years
including a version that was run on a PC. Today\, it is an Atari 8 bit BB
S running BBS Express Pro!. SysOp Abdul acquired the BBS Express Pro! soft
ware from his friend\, Keith Ledbetter. Ledbetter had shut down his BBS af
ter he sold the rights of the BBS Express Pro! software. Abdul did not do
anything with Keith's old BBS until 1999 when he resurrected the BBS as a
telnet/Internet based BBS. He made the BBS his own by renaming it Boot Fac
tory 2K+ (or simply BF2K+). Despite the name change\, many of the original
message bases and file downloads have been preserved. You can check out t

DESCRIPTION:\n\n	Bill Metcalfe\, co-owner of @ircular Logic\, passed awa
	y on May 6\, 2020. He was 62. Bill\, along with co-owner Tom McComb\, cre
ated several popular games for the Atari 8 bit computer in the 80s and ear
ly 90s. These games ran under the BBS Express Pro! Bulletin Board System S
oftware.\n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	Bill and Tom marketed these games under the co
mpany name @ircular Logic. Their catalog includes \"Nebula Elite\" which
was an intense multiplayer space empire game. They also created an earlier
version of the game called \"Nebula\". Other games include ZSS Express
(a space adventure game)\, Chess\, Reversi (an Othello like game)\, SeaWar
(a Battleship like game)\, TACTX (an army simulation game)\, and Gotcha (
a paintball simulation game). @ircular Logic games were written in the Act
ion! programming language and featured Artificial Intelligence (AI) that w
as quite impressive for games running on a 64K 8-bit computer. BBS users c
ould play against other BBS users or against the Atari computer. Atari was
no slouch as an opponent thanks to the well written AI algorithms in thes
	e games.\n\n	\n\n	@ircular Logic also released a \"Life Expectancy\" modul
e and an amusing SysOp Secretary module which would answer SysOp pages\,
chat with the caller\, and take a message for the SysOp.\n\n	\n\n	Bill wi
ll certainly be missed\, but the games he created with Tom will live on. T

	International Atari Online Magazine (Issue #92-12) mentions three dates\;
	January 27\, 1992\, March 6\, 1992\, and January 28\, 1992 (written at the
end of the announcement as o1/28/92). However\, the copyright date mentio
ned in the announcement is 1991-1992. So\, it was probably released in Jan
uary 1992 or late (perhaps December) 1991. \n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	This softw
are runs on an Atari ST\, Atari STE\, or Atari TT030 with at least 1 megab
yte of RAM. The BBS retailed for $50.00 and came with many features includ
ing a powerful scripting language\, the ability to run doors written for
FoReM ST and ///Turbo Board BBSs\, full color support in messages (e.g.\,

DESCRIPTION:\n\n	In January 1987\, the Basement BBS upgraded its softwar
e to the original BBS Express! software by Keith Ledbetter. The Basement a
lso added an Avatex 1200 modem connected to the BBS' Atari 800XL with an I
	CD P:R: Connection.\n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	The Avatex 1200 modem was a rather
inexpensive 1200 baud modem. However\, it was partially Hayes Compatible.
The partial Hayes compatibility worked OK with BBS Express but created som
e compatibility challenges with other BBS software. Some SysOps\, therefor
e\, would refer to this modem as the \"Avayuck\".  Another non-standard f
eature was its \"Data/Voice\" switch (see photo below). Modems typically a
llow a telephone to be plugged into them so the user can make voice calls
with the modem plugged in. On full Hayes compatible modems\, this just wor
ks. On the Avatex 1200\, the user had to push out the \"Data/Voice\" butto
n before making their voice call. This meant if you forgot to push the \
"Data/Voice\" button back in after your call\, your BBS will not answer an
y more calls (until you remember to push the button back in). This was ye
t another reason why it got the \"Avayuck\" name.\n\n\n\n	 \n\n\n\n	Later
in 1987\, the Basement would add a 10 meg MFM hard drive\, a 1 meg ICD MI
O\, and an Avatex 2400 modem. The Avatex 2400 modem was a full Hayes Compa
tible 2400 baud modem and would run without issue for several years.\n\n\n
