    • If you wait till the end you will miss all the oohs and aahs from your fellow developers.   But I can release a bit of text from my game already:   "The little girl and the frog exchanged curious glances as they noticed the absence of the rainbow in the sky." "What has happened to our vibrant rainbow lately?" the frog asked.
    • I made the intro screen and the title screen, and I'm already at 37.7 KB, Too much? don't know. Most of the GFX I need are already in.   Let's See. I plan to make 3 mini games, if I go short of memory I'll make only 2 or 1, but it would be a pity.   Can't remenmber how is the rule about previews. Can I post WIP screenshots and demos, or is it better to release everything at the end?
    • VideoGames & Computer Entertainment (1993) I finished reading through the 1993 issues of this mag.  Although Aug 1993 was the final issue of this magazine, it did continue the following month as VideoGames - The Ultimate Gaming Magazine, though by this point it was pretty much a completely different mag (the core team of Eddy/Katz/Kunkel/Worley was gone, and they not only dropped PC game coverage, but injected a lot of 90s attitude.. including a completely embarrassing editorial that definitely reads like a grown man trying to sound hip and with it).  So I'm not gonna bother continuing with the successor mag.   ---   This magazine had a lot of problems, but I'm sad to see it go.  It had a pleasant layout and nice screenshots, and when they managed to get the right person reviewing the right game, their console game reviews were quite good.  Their PC game reviews were mostly excellent, though the quality for even this content began to really slip in '92 and especially in '93.   ---   My biggest problem with the magazine is their poor selection of reviewers.  Several of their reviewers couldn't tell a good platformer, shooter, or beat'em up from a bad one, which is absolutely insane for someone professionally reviewing console games in the early 90s.  Instead, they would just go on and on about meaningless stuff like how funny they thought the animation was when the character stood still, or how great the digitized voice was, but not mention anything about level design, play control, difficulty, or whatever.  The problem is that this was true for several of their regular reviewers!  This would lead to absolute nonsense like their review describing unparalleled masterpiece Contra III: The Alien Wars as a mediocre side scroller that's just Contra with nicer graphics, but then turning around and praising the absolutely dire Dragon's Lair (SNES).  Yes, they were different reviewers, but this is not GameFAQs where everything goes... you need to exert some editorial control so that people can actually trust your reviews.  Imagine being the kid that passed on Contra III to pick up Dragon's Lair, thanks to VG&CE.   They also had one reviewer in particular, Howard Wen, who seems completely miserable in every single one of his tedious, sarcastic reviews.  The guy comes off as hating every game he plays, even those he scores highly, because he just goes on an on about how dumb the story is, and how he's reviewing yet another platformer/shooter/beat'em up.  His reviews are honestly a complete waste of space, and it's unbelievable that he was one of their main reviewers.
    • Because number of sprites is dependent on a variety of things like color depht, size, collision checks, quality of animation and everything else what is going on in the game.   Native is already a "tour de force" for the OP processor, with 16 bit color sprites, large animated parallax background layers and transparency effects.    I wonder how you want to improve on that 8x?? I mean, I  agree it could be improved, but 8x, seriously?   Again, name the source and the quote where that was stated. Any of these boastful claims surely does not sound like originating from Duranik (or any sincere developer by that measure), and would be quite out of character.       Now, Olivier Nallets quote from the interview needs to be put in the correct context as well.   Super Burn Out is a totally different game and optimized for scaling static 8 bit images very fast.  Nowhere it says you could render 1000 16 bit color sprites in a game like Native.   Maybe it is possible, but I doubt we will ever see you doing the necessary work to realize your lofty expectations.             .
    • I use 0.5mm solder for pretty much everything. I do have 0.3mm but as it's so small there is so little flux in it i find it's only usable with added flux and I only usually it on the really fine pitch SMT I use unleaded solder nowadays and actually prefer it to the old leaded but it has to be the stuff with 3% silver in it, the cheaper unleaded without silver is horrible to use. This is the stuff i used, it's silly expensive but a reel that size would last a hobbyist a lifetime. https://uk.farnell.com/multicore-loctite/631719/solder-wire-96-5-3-0-5-217-deg/dp/1257142?st=97sc Luckily work pay for mine.   Despite soldering since I knew which end of the iron was hot, I've never mastered drag soldering. 😞
    • As is well known, Lynx is capable of displaying video at different screen refresh rates. The original screen was designed for this and at any frequency we had a smooth display without any tearing. Sadly it might not be the case with modern LCD/IPS mods. I have myself a unit modded with McWill LCD upgade and I've spotted that even with the default refresh rate (as close 60 Hz as Lynx can no) the display has visible tearing when certain things are displayed. So I've decided to write a simple demonstration that displays something characteristic on the screen and that allows to change the refresh rate smoothly withing the limits and resolution allowed by hardware. It allows to scroll the stripes with D-PAD and change the FPS with A and B. OPT1 resets it to the default 59.89.   I've run the tool on my Lynx and recorded it using my phone with 59.845 fps. As you can see there are noticeable tearing in every refresh rate. And for some rates the colors are changing and some distortions appear. Those distortions are really strange and I wonder whether running this code on modded Lynx is safe, but mine did not explode and I've run it multiple times.     Generally I did it to check whether there are indeed issues with some LCD mods after discussions with people claiming that there are no difference in the display quality in different refresh rates. It can be safely run on original non-modded screen - in every FPS the scrolling of the stripes should be smooth. My McWill mod seems to have fixed refresh rate little above 55 Hz for some reason. If someone is brave enough I would be very interested in knowing how different mods perform with this test. fps_test.lyx   Here is also a source code if someone want's to check it before running the code.   fps_src.zip
    • What size solder do you use, Jim? I really must get better at this for doing those CF connectors on the Mini-Cortex.
    • Unfortunately the 2600+ doesn't offer this option (yet?). Since the Stella emulator supports save states (and the R77 makes use of them), there is hope that access to the Stella UI will be added with future updates. E.g. Stella's command menu for R77 looks like this: Here you have direct access to some options. And with "Settings..." there are many, many more options available. A command menu for the 2600+ would look similar (or identical).
