Got my Windows 98 PC and CRT monitor up and running. Keyboard and mouse are mismatched and Im having to use earbuds as speakers but it's such a nostalgia trip to run this thing. I checked out all the screen savers and different sounds. Time to play some Myst, a game I suck at but it works on this computer at least.

yeah thanks. might try and upgrade video card and ram so I can run some of the better late 90's games. currently trying to figure out how to transfer my GOG.com games to it. I think I have to burn them to disc
      3. bent_pin

        Or a USB drive.
      4. dudeguy

Yeah I tried my USB to SD card with an SD card formatted for FAT32. doesn't show up on either my Windows XP laptop or the 98 desktop. looking for my other thumb drives
      5. bent_pin

Yoooo, try this: VOGONS Vintage Driver Library (vogonsdrivers.com) lets you use USB drives with 98. They aren't natively supported as they barely existed back then.

Interesting, but the lift potential of those propellers is quite unrealistic, given their size. Increase them maybe eight-fold and you'd be approaching something realistic. There are also some crazy eddies between building even when one is not on fire, but stronger when there is an extreme and erratic thermal difference between them.

Still, it's a neat idea. I love seeing advancements in fire suppression systems engineering. My former father-in-law wrote the book on Naval firefighting. Like his name is literally on the cover. Cool guy, for lack of a better term.

    • I'm just going to ad my $0.02 here in terms of hardware possibilities and realities..  like other systems, the O2 has had decades of post life homebrew and support.  All of these systems have their passionate contributors who some have the needed brain power and know how to expand these capabilities.    For the 2600 you have the harmony cart and probably others I'm just ignorant too.  This multicart also has an arm CPU on it which can be utilized to accelerate games.  Look at Champ Games Robot War and others to see how insane things can go still using the original systems hardware limitations.  The added calculations just allow that much more to be going on the screen.     The Intellivision has the JLP.  This standard has allowed INTV devs to have save games as well as acceleration.  Not many (maybe one?) game has leveraged the arm cpu on the JLP board acceleration, but it's there if someone were so inclined (and lucky to have an LTO cart) but yea it's not been used, but it's there.   I would imagine by now if there were workarounds for the O2, the brilliant and passionate devs would have found them by now and it would be common knowledge.  From what I've learned there are very real (and unfortunate) shortcomings with Magnavox's decisions on what hardware to make their games with. The plus side though to this is that making games for the O2 is "much easier" to code for than the 2600.  Yes it's assembly, which isn't the most user friendly language, but the code and how it's able to make things happen relative to the 2600 is easier.     I do imagine that some kind of boosted multicart maybe could help take it to new heights, but this isn't something done by just anyone.  It's going to take some serious knowhow and dedication from someone to produce this.  I'm all for innovation and I'm not saying this couldn't be done in 2024, but I'm pretty confident that if there were some "chasing the beam" techniques out there that could work for the O2, we'd know about them by now.
    • I'm looking forward to seeing more of this. I'm hoping it's an improved version of Daedalic Entertainment's game,  The Long Journey Home.    https://store.steampowered.com/app/366910/The_Long_Journey_Home/   Watch tutorial video #2 and #3 to get an idea of what I'm talking about.
    • Thanks to all who have made and continue to make this console what it is and what it will be.  I’m here for the long haul. I love  buying plastic devices to place into other plastic devices to have interactive experiences.
    • If anybody with a DF cart has a moment, could you please run the attached rom? I'd like to see if it runs fine and the cursor blinks at the end.   I'm asking for DF, because I really want the test to be pure, with a clean bios startup, and no other non-bios code hitting registers before this program. 7800locktest.a78   Thanks!

    • Did not work unfortunately. But I'd rather have a solution that does not require sector editing of the file.   Yes usually I just use the Level 3 LOAD to dump the file straight into the VDP tables for displaying splash screens and such. But here I need to access the data byte by byte so I can process it. Pascal has a BLOCKREAD facility which allows for the raw reading of any data from files sector by sector, but sadly no such thing in XB. I'll look into the level 2 subprogram.   I've used DSRLNK and GPLLNK with XB before with Kroll & Prumni to display the splash screen. Here's the code for these utilities (courtesy of @senior_falcon: ***************************** * FROM THE SMART PROGRAMMER * ***************************** * GPLLNK AND DSRLNK GPLWS EQU >83E0 GR4 EQU GPLWS+8 GR6 EQU GPLWS+12 LDGADD EQU >60 XTAB27 EQU >200E GETSTK EQU >166C GPLLNK DATA GLNKWS DATA GLINK1 RTNAD DATA XMLRTN GXMLAD DATA >176C DATA >50 GLNKWS EQU $->18 BSS >08 GLINK1 MOV *R11,@GR4 MOV *R14+,@GR6 MOV @XTAB27,R12 MOV R9,@XTAB27 LWPI GPLWS BL *R4 MOV @GXMLAD,@>8302(R4) INCT @>8373 B @LDGADD XMLRTN MOV @GETSTK,R4 BL *R4 LWPI GLNKWS MOV R12,@XTAB27 RTWP *DSRLNK PUTSTK EQU >50 TYPE EQU >836D NAMLEN EQU >8356 VWA EQU >8C02 VRD EQU >8800 GR4LB EQU >83E9 GSTAT EQU >837C DSRLNK DATA DSRWS,DLINK1 DSRWS EQU $ DR3LB EQU $+7 DLINK1 MOV R12,R12 JNE DLINK3 LWPI GPLWS MOV @PUTSTK,R4 BL *R4 LI R4,>11 MOVB R4,@>402(R13) JMP DLINK2 DATA 0 DATA 0,0,0 DLINK2 MOVB @GR4LB,@>402(R13) MOV @GETSTK,R5 MOVB *R13,@DSRAD1 INCT @DSRADD BL *R5 LWPI DSRWS LI R12,>2000 DLINK3 INC R14 MOVB *R14+,@TYPE MOV @NAMLEN,R3 AI R3,-8 BLWP @GPLLNK DSRADD BYTE >03 DSRAD1 BYTE >00 MOVB @DR3LB,@VWA MOVB R3,@VWA SZCB R12,R15 MOVB @VRD,R3 SRL R3,5 MOVB R3,*R13 JNE SETEQ COC @GSTAT,R12 JNE DSREND SETEQ SOCB R12,R15 DSREND RTWP
    • I just pushed an update.  Now it will take in user-supplied defines, and there's a syntax for adding options, saying if they're words, strings, what base to use when printing, and how many bytes the label refers to.  You can also turn off the built-in labels, which are now in four separate categories: atari, cio, floating point, and basic.  I have basic off by default, as I figure most disassembly will be of code designed to run without BASIC.   There's a README file that hopefully explains all this now.   Of course, I probably broke something.   https://github.com/pcrow/atari_8bit_utils/tree/main/disasm
    • That is bizarre - and make me wonder even more how some people were able to come up with something amazing as the Freezer or the Black Box, but nothing much else of such impact. But then your work on your guide is even more important...
