    Carina BBS is released (observed)

    An ad for the Carina BBS software created by Jerry Horanoff appears on page 36 of the July 1986 issue of Antic magazine (Volume 5 Number 3). It retailed for $69.95, which included tax and shipping.   Prior to its general release, the BBS software was used by a few BBSs in Florida, according to the August 16, 1986 issue of Z*Magazine.     The Basement BBS returns online

    On July 4, 2017, the Basement BBS returns online. The Basement originally operated from November 1986 through September 1998.   The Basement's telnet address is: basementbbs.ddns.net port 9000.   More information on the Basement BBS is available at http://basementbbs.loginto.me:7000/.

    Southern Amis BBS Reopens

    On this day, July 12th, in 2020 Southern Amis BBS returned online. Southern Amis was originally called Southern Comfort and was an AMIS BBS in the 516 area code during the mid-80s (source: BBSMates website). Southern Amis was started as a tribute to the original Southern Comfort BBS. The BBS runs BBS Express and is hosted in the AWS Cloud. As of this writing, it is the only "Atari only" BBS online

    The Cleveland Freenet Goes Online

    On this day, July 16th, in 1986, The Cleveland Freenet (CFN) went online. CFN was a a free public community computer system, the first of its kind in the world. The success of CFN lead to the creation of other Freenet systems located throughout the world.   CFN would host several Special Interest Groups (SIGs) including an Atari SIG.     Original 850 BBS Express! released

    Orion Micro Systems starts shipping the original 850 version of BBS Express! on or around this day, July 19th, in 1986 (source: July 19, 1986 issue of ZMagazine). The software was written by Keith Ledbetter using the Action! programming language. The software retailed at $39.95 plus $4.00 shipping.

    Alcatraz BBS returns online

    On this day, July 20th, in 2017, Alcatraz BBS returned online.  Alcatraz BBS had been offline for about 28 years prior to its resurrection.     Bulletin Board Construction Set is released

    Bulletin Board Construction Set (BBCS) was first announced/reviewed in the August 1985 issue of Antic (Volume 4 Number 4 page 41). Antic also announced in this issue that it would sell BBCS through its Antic Arcade catalog. BBCS is a BBS program written in 100% machine language by Scott Brause of the Jersey Atari Computer Group. BBCS allowed the SysOp to customize the BBS through easy to use menus

    Atari Corp BBS goes online

    In August, 1985 Atari Corp began operating a BBS. The BBS began on two Atari 800 computers and a Corvus hard disk, running the  Nite Light BBS Software. By February, 1987 the BBS had 5 phone lines each connected to an Atari ST. Also in February, 1987 the Atari BBS was averaging 12,000 monthly calls (source: February 1987 issue of Antic Magazine - Volume 5, Number 10 page 52).

    MPP Reorganizes as Supra Corp

    This month in 1985, Microbits Peripheral Products (MPP), was purchased by Supra Corporation. MPP was the maker of the popular MPP1000C and MPP1000E 300 baud modems that plugged into the Atari 8 bit's joystick port.
