  1. Early CD game support is now available with the latest firmware. Any game ISO's (CCD/IMG, CDI and CUE/BIN) will need to first be converted into JCD files before they can be run on the GameDrive cartridge. To do this you will need to run your ISO's through this Windows command line tool: https://www.retrohq.co.uk/product/jaggd/cd2jcd.zip You may also need to install the latest Visual Studio runtime libraries from Microsoft if you don't have them already: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads-2647da03-1eea-4433-9aff-95f26a218cc0 The JCD files need to be stored contiguously on the memory card for the CD support to be able to work. Basically this means you need to use a freshly formatted memory card to copy the images onto. The launcher will tell you if there are any issues with the JCD image when you try and run it, if the file is not contiguous it will not try and run it. You will also need to make sure you have the latest firmware installed on your Jaguar GameDrive cartridge. To do this press OPTION when prompted as the cartridge is booting and visit the URL given to you on-screen. If (and only if) you do not have the "Press OPTION for firmware update." prompt come up during boot and you bought the cartridge directly from me a long time ago, then grab the firmware update from the product page. This is early support for CD games, there are issues, but it's at a point people can start playing with it and get something out of it. There is currently no memorytrak support either (yet), so you will not be able to save progress in this way on any CD games. Also be aware I have had reports (and experience myself) of some memory cards not working with CD support. I believe this is due to the cards being too slow to respond to data requests and starving the data through to the Jaguar and causing games to fail.

  5. Still working on the overview screen. It's become an obsession to make it a playable 1-pixel thing. A few changes. I've gone to this "chequerboard" idea - where object shapes are based on which square they're on as if it were a board. The idea being, pieces side-by-side in 1-pixel-world are impossible to tell apart. Think of a row of boulders, or of butterflies. Now I choose a different image to display based on if the object is on a "white" or a "black" location on the board. Now for most objects this makes no difference - same shape is used. But for the ground, for example, compare the ground in the video with the image in the post above. I use different shapes in this case, so I get that nice much less dense 1-pixel ground. Another place I've used this is in the "shape" of the boulder. When there's a huge block of boulders, well it doesn't look like a huge block of boulders, more like a ... splodge. So I use odd/even parity on the boulder shape just by one scanline. The effect is that each side-by-side boulder is a different colour. But because I use a different shape, every two frames both colours are displayed. So boulders "shimmer" at 30Hz. It's noticeable, I guess, but not nearly as bad as the video shows. That's because the video capture on my machine can't cope with 60Hz, so it's about 38 Hz, and then the video conversion on top of that. Much better IRL. Also I've used alternate animations on the chequerboard for the butterflies, so they also seem distinct when side by side. The diamonds do it because of their random flashing so I left those alone. And the amoeba, of course, I want to be a gigantic splodge, so I left that one alone. So there you have it. 1-pixel gaming. overview13.mp4

  8. Much to my delight, I found a bit of legacy code in the scrolling. In my earliest efforts here, I had a triple-screen Interleaved ChronoColour(TM) system -- that is, the colours rolled over 3 frames. To prevent "shearing" during the scroll, I limited the scrolling to only occur on the start of each frame triplet. I neglected to remove that limitation when I went back to the single-frame ICC display. Having just discovered (and removed) that limitation, the scroll is now super-silky-smooth. A wonder to behold, actually. Here it is in action...

  12. I am not, this game only got to this state because multiple iterations, feedback and ideas from you (community), and no pressure on a release date. Hello AtariAge Community, I have many people in the community to say thanks. My game only got to that state because of you. Now I am really close to the 4KB, I cannot add anything else to the game. The cartridge release is coming, so I want to use that time to make sure we have no bugs, and that the game is well tuned. This is an open invitation for you to post highscores or even gameplay videos, also to freely post ideas and feedback. After the game is released, I don't want to change anything else. The Journey has been amazing, thanks!

  14. I seem to recall that in the beginning bitcoin people had some noble ideas about it being an alternative, untraceable currency (ultimately a good thing), hence "crypto", but I doubt anybody remebers or cares about it now (kind of like with the idea that internet was supposed to be free and open...). When people lose their minds over using gaming cards to "mine" for digital fool's gold, or pay millions of US$ for a bunch of .jpgs you know it's all back to "normal"

  15. To be fair, the "I-can't-believe" games usually use WAY more advanced additional hardware than what was available and affordable back then. I have respect for their decision to stay within the limits of the CPU and RAM. Anything else wouldn't have been even remotely authentic.

  18. Here are my retro times for the week, I played allot of Castlevania 3 Dracula's Curse while doing some other work at the same time, so those minutes are a rough estimate. Atari 2600 Demon Attack - -50 Minutes This game is so fun to just be able to pick up and play for quick moments at a time, although I can't seem to surpass my high score. NES Castlevania -20 Minutes Castlevania will forever be one of my favorite games, and a really difficult one at that. In my opinion its not as difficult as Castlevania 3, but the Grim Reaper and Dracula will always be challenging to me. Castlevania 3 Dracula's Curse -605 Minutes This game is a classic and I was able to go through two different routes of this game. I like to use save states because if I don't, the game can be really difficult and anxiety inducing at certain times.. An interesting note is after you beat the game, it gets even more difficult with new enemies spawning in different areas of the game. My favorite new enemy was the medusa head replacement, which are now skull heads that fly around and are really difficult to avoid. Galaga -20 Minutes I think this is my favorite shooter on the NES. This game got me thinking about how back in the day when playing arcade games, there were no pause button and how it would have made it even more difficult to play for long periods of time. Ghosts' N Goblins -25 Minutes This is a great side scrolling action game for the NES, and is in contention to be my favorite game on the system. It's a toss up between this and the Castlevania Games. Turbo Grafx 16 Final Soldier -25 Minutes I would definitely recommend this game if you can get a chance to play this shooter. The music is great, the weapons are really interesting, and the game is definitely difficult. PS1 Tomb Raider -150 Minutes I am really enjoying playing this game, and although the controls are not perfect, the game is really fun. I think I would put this game in the category of Adventure/Exploration with action/shooting elements in some parts of the game, but it might be to early to tell. Either way it is really fun to explore the giant levels in this game, but I didn't realize the amount of time it would take me find certain areas in this game.

  20. Hi everyone. I've just got the Spitfire (Looping) and Jaxxon (Zaxxon) carts in my collection few days ago and noticed that no one ever dumped any cart made by Splice. So, I sent them to Alexandre Casella, a repro expert, and now, almost 40 years after Splice released those carts, we dumped them successfully. In this post I'm releasing the Spitfire ROM. Jaxxon will follow shortly. Enjoy! spitfire (splice vision).col

  21. Got this from Amazon, and it does support 15kHz on my Amiga 1200. Which leads me to wondering if we can get a VGA -> socket made for the Geneve/Mechatronic/EVPC/EVPC2/AVPC and try it on these systems, or least crowdsource the cable pinout and stick them here in this thread. (Sidebar: I went looking for the SNUG website to see if they had pinouts, but my bookmark must be old - I can't find it. Anyone have the current link?) At $139, it's a pretty good deal. The only negative thing is I can't seem to consistently force 4:3 mode. Has a gorgeous screen! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GV9H1RS/ The Mechatronic and EVPC look somewhat alike. 22. What is worse, well. Knowing that you have to sell. Look. I think we've, or almost all of us here, have been there, selling something that is hard to replace. I'll always reserve a SNE cart for you when you're back in the saddle. You know I don't think I've ever left that place, I never found the end of a rainbow yet. I'll continue eating graham crackers out of a box a bit longer I suppose. But, one day the fun starts all over and you pick up treasure hunting again. I think we'd rather see and hear your ideas more than anything, if that goes, then we all lose something that is hard to replace.

  24. Here's the summary for Week 14, running from April 5 - 11. We logged 6069 minutes of eligible play, playing 90 games on a total of 20 systems. Top 10: 1. Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (NES/Famicom) - 605 min. 1. Suikoden II (PlayStation) - 605 min. (#5) 3. Thunder Force IV (Sega Saturn) - 411 min. 4. Isle of the Cursed Prophet, The (C64) - 350 min. 5. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PlayStation) - 338 min. (#2) 6. Magic Knight Rayearth (Sega Saturn) - 284 min. 7. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 247 min. (#7) 8. Thunder Force AC (Arcade) - 237 min. 9. Kaboom! (Atari 2600) - 217 min. (#10) 10. Legend of the Amazon Women (UK ver?) (C64) - 203 min. (US ver #1) Pre-NES top 10: 1. Isle of the Cursed Prophet, The (C64) - 350 min. 2. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 247 min. (PN#3) 3. Kaboom! (Atari 2600) - 217 min. (PN#4) 4. Legend of the Amazon Women (UK ver?) (C64) - 203 min. (US ver PN#1) 5. Dishaster (Atari 2600) - 138 min. 6. Asteroids Deluxe (Atari 7800) - 70 min. 7. Demon Attack (Atari 2600) - 50 min. 7. Robbo (Atari 8-bit) - 50 min. 9. Atlantis (Intellivision) - 38 min. (PN#8) 10. Asteroids Deluxe (Arcade) - 35 min. Top 10 systems: 1. PlayStation (1093) (#1) 2. Sega Saturn (1009) 3. NES/Famicom (994) (#6) 4. Atari 2600 (750) (#2) 5. C64 (565) (#3) 6. Arcade (486) (#7) 7. Genesis (219) (#5) 8. Neo Geo AES/MVS (169) (#4) 9. Intellivision (134) (#9) 9. SNES (134) It rarely happens, but this week Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse and Suikoden II are inseparable, meaning they share the first place on the overall top list. Those are followed by a couple versions of Thunder Force and another Castlevania, but also this week's pre-NES leader, The Isle of the Cursed Prophet, meaning this list for the second week in a row is headed by a C64 game. On the systems front it is a very close call between the PlayStation, Sega Saturn and NES/Famicom, less than 100 minutes beteen #1 and #3. The pre-crash systems like the 2600, C64 and Intellivision and found further down the list. Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (NES/Famicom) also becomes member #443 in the 1000 Minute Club with a total of 1527 min. For that matter, Akumajou Densetsu which according to my notes should correspond to the Japanese version of Castlevania III, is up to 631 min but I'm sure there are good reasons why we track these separately. Speaking of tracking separately, we've got 27 games for the Atari ST tracked. Besides the STe enhanced version of Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge played this week, I haven't tried to look up if any of the other games are STe specific, just like we on the Amiga side separate OCS games from ECS/AGA games. For the moment being, I'll keep it with the others and as the game title indicates it is a STe game it could be separated at a later point in time.

  27. "In my 800 I added a pot to the speaker so I could type late at night without waking the neighborhood." It always struck me odd at how much variation there is in the XL series Key Click and SIO sounds. My 1200XL's have a very loud key clicks and quite soft SIO. If I set the SIO sound to a nice level, then the key click is jarring. Don't remember much about my 800, but I'm sure @ClausB has it right. An interesting little tidbit -- the the 1200XL is apx. 12(1/2)" deep; the 800XL is apx. 8(3/4)" deep; and the 600XL is apx. 6(3/4)" deep. I've never seen anything written that indicates that those dimensions had anything to do with the names, but if a coincidence, it is an interesting one. The 1200XL is a nice Atari, but takes up a lot of desk space, IMO.

  32. That is interesting to know that the Audacity Games company was formed, and are creating new cartridge based Atari 2600 games. Thank you for that information, and as always thanks for taking the time to add up the minutes for the week. Its funny that you said Metroid games are short, because the SNES one looks like it would take me a long while to complete, but I need to give it a go. I think I can only play the non arcade versions of Hellfire and Truxton, and its too bad they messed up on the music: an aspect that I am really starting to like in games just as much as the game itself. I think I will try out the Thunder Force series on the Sega Genesis first, but hopefully one day I can move on to the other versions of the game because they look really fun/difficult to play. If the Saturn version is the most difficult, hopefully one day I can attain that version because I like to play difficult games. I would most likely use save states to help reduce the anxiety they cause from the repetition of playing certain areas over and over again. This looks like a fun version of the game, but I'm not to big of a fan of the sound effects. I guess for some reason just like with most of the Atari games I play, I like to listen to my own music while playing them. I also forgot to ask you, did you enjoy playing Demon Attack on the Intellivision last week? The reason I ask is because I remember you saying you didn't like Xevious because the enemies seem to avoid you at all costs. I know its not to that extent in Demon Attack, especially it being single screen, but I feel as though the enemies try to avoid you as well. Congratulations on your achievement. I am going to try to put in some time this week on Solar Fox, and I'll be lucky to get past level 15. I don't think I've ever seen this version of the game. The sound seems like it is better in this version than the TurboGrafx 16 in my opinion. Castlevania Symphony of the Night is a great game, and hopefully one day I will finish it. Did you complete it in that amount of time? That sounds like me with the regular version of Kaboom. One day I would really like to play it with the Atari Joysticks.

  38. Before I forget to post, I'll just do it right in the middle of the week... NES: Super Mario Bros.: 25 min Tetris:10 min Both with my 6-year-old. C64: The Isle of the Cursed Prophet: 350 min An interesting new game from 2020, published by Psytronic. Sort of a simplified Zelda-ish action adventure game/fetch quest with a dark theme and nice cutscenes at the beginning and at the ending. Very beautiful, elaborate manual with map included - which I recommend you use a lot to write notes onto if you play it. Some fun "translate the sectre code" puzzles to solve in the manual for hints. All in all I had fun. It ain't no rocket science to beat it, it can get redundant, but the presentation, controls etc. are good. I bought the digital version and played it in VICE. Definetly not a waste of money.

  44. You have a good memory! I like the Intellivision version of Demon Attack, but even though it is a bit more basic, I kinda prefer the 2600 version. Inty Demon Attack has different enemy patterns (that are not annoying) and it even has a mothership boss stage, but the 2600 version controls a bit more precisely, and I think it is just a slightly better experience. Still, if you like Demon Attack, you should seek out and play the Inty version (and the Odyssey 2 version). None of those seem to be as deliberatly annoying as Xevious. At least not to me.
