600XL upgraded with built-in MIDI, UAV, Basic RevC, and 64K
Forrest replied to mytek's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I have respect for anyone who can use a hacksaw on a PCB and have the modified board work better than before they began. I usually don't take a hacksaw to a board until after it's already broken - only to salvage connectors or components. -
I had a similar problem years ago on my 800XL. Fixed if by popping the case (power off), noting the position of the pot and rotating it back and forth 3 times - returning it to the original position.

The Raspberry Pi and Retropie discussion thread

FYI if you use a Micro SD card larger than 32 GB, you'll have to go thru a few extra steps to install the OS according to https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/installation/sdxc_formatting.md I use the inexpensive and highly rated Microcenter 32 GB Micro SD card. Two for $9.99 at https://www.amazon.com/Micro-Center-Class-Memory-Adapter/dp/B07K81Z6DF/ref=sr_1_17?keywords=32+GB+sd+card&qid=1553871149&s=gateway&sr=8-17 -

I like the Retroflag NESPi case. It comes with heatsinks and a small fan (which is not needed unless you plan to overclock) and working power and reset buttons. Cost is $25-$28 depending on your source. I bought mine from Amazon thru GeekPi, bundled with 2 SNES style USB gamepads for $37.99. -
The Logitech F310 Gamepad controller is not Atari style, but it's a well built controller that works great on PC's, Mac's, Raspberry Pi (RetroPie) and others. The controller can be switched from XInput (XBox controller mode) or DInput (for Macs and old style controller mode). This controller normally costs $25, but according to https://slickdeals.net/f/12967366-logitech-f310-gamepad-controller-13-free-store-pickup?page=4#commentsBox Target has it on sale for $13

Create ICSP Programmer for Embedded Micro Controller Chips
Forrest replied to mytek's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Michael, I understand the limitations of your programmer - it's not an issue for me. I'm a hobbyist - not a developer. I can appreciate the simplicity of your design. -
Create ICSP Programmer for Embedded Micro Controller Chips
Forrest replied to mytek's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Michael, OK, thanks for the confirmation. The JOY2PIC-STIK will be an update for me. The last PIC chip programmer I built was the P16PRO40 parallel port programmer I made in 1998. That one had 8, 18 and 40 pin DIP sockets instead of a ZIF socket to keep costs down. The P16 software was last updated in 2002 and doesn't support the PIC used on the SIO2MIDI interface. -

Michael, Thanks for creating the JOY2PIC-STIK and the SIO2MIDI interface. I'm planning on building both. I have some of the components for the JOY2PIC-STIK in my parts drawer, with the exception of the PCB and 18 Pin ZIF socket. Considering I'll use the JOY2PIC programmer infrequently, is it possible to substitute a 18 pin DIP socket for the 18 pin ZIF socket? Forrest -

mytek, Does the 2 port MIDI design in your post #332 still work for playing MIDI maze or connecting to 1 MIDI keyboard? I would like to connect the MIDI adapter to a stock XL or XE computer.

I've just got a Specter GCR :)
Forrest replied to walter_J64bit's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Horray! You'll be much happier when getting the system installed on your hard drive. I didn't have any problem running SpectreGCR off my ICD equipped hard drives and 44 GB Syquest cartridges back then. I don't know if the Syquest drives held up over the years, because the drives haven't been connected. FYI, these days even real, old Macs don't work well formatting 800K disks, due to the variable speed drives. -

Atari Flashback 9 HD B/W TV Type Switch?
Forrest replied to KevinMos3's topic in AtGames Flashback and Portable Consoles
Considering all HDTV's are color, why would you want to play games in black and white? -
At the 2019 Vintage Computer Festival East, in Wall, NJ on May 3-5, Joe Decuir (Atari 2600, Atari 800 and Amiga designer) is the Keynote speaker on May 5. http://vcfed.org/wp/festivals/vintage-computer-festival-east/ I'm thinking of attending on May 5. Is anyone else planning on attending?

Forrest replied to walter_J64bit's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
I checked my disk collection and found the installation set of System 6.0.5 on (4) 800K disks. These are the disks I used many years ago to setup Spectre GCR. I want to verify the disks work - will need to setup one of my old Macs. Send me a private message if you're interested in these disks, and I'll send them gratis. -

I hope you can get another set of System 6 disks that works. Once you have System 6 installed on your hard drive, the Mac emulation runs very well. -
Tempest Nut, Thanks for your hard work. There's a video posted of Yak playing Tempest 4K with a Logitech Trackman Marble before the game was released. I think I saw this video on Llamasoft's web site. It's not clear from the video if this was the PC version or XBox One. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Forrest replied to walter_J64bit's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
The good news is there's a lot of stuff that is working properly on your system for you to see a Mac system error. Your ST didn't crash, Spectre software didn't crash and the Spectre GCR was able to read the Mac disks. I'm a longtime Mac user and don't recall what a MBDF error is, but it doesn't appear to be a disk error. I scanned the GCR manual linked above and on page 66 is a section stating 'Things you definitely should not ever do'. Among them is to NOT shutdown or restart from the Finder. The manual states using shutdown or restart from the Finder will not update the disk directory. This will likely corrupt the Mac System installation. I recommend reinstalling the Mac System again the proper way outlined in the manual. -

That's a Mac system error. Did you see this error during the System 6 installation or afterwards? What version of System 6 did you install? -
I agree - the Xbox One controller doesn't do a good job playing Tempest 4000. I see Microsoft released an Xbox system update, allowing the use of USB mice and keyboards to be used with the Xbox One. I plugged in a Logitech Trackman Marble into my Xbox One, but it didn't work with Tempest 4000. I suspect a Tempest 4000 patch is needed.

walter, You said your internal floppy drive isn't working, so how did you try to read the Mac 800K disks? -
Mark, Download the firmware again from the link at the beginning of this thread. After unzipping the file, let it sit for 1 minute before moving or writing to the SD card. Install the firmware upgrade from the SD card again. I've seen antivirus software delay unzipping a file for 45 seconds until it scans for viruses.

I successfully upgraded my FB9 Gold tonight. The firmware updated unzipped into a folder containing 2 items. The folder is not needed. Only the atari_update file should be copied to the SD card. Also the SD card seemed not to be recognized until I unplugged the power cable of the FB9 and reinserted 15 seconds later. It took more than 1 try, but the SD card was finally recognized and the firmware updated. After that, I could play the games from the SD card. Thanks to Atari Age group for compiling the 1000 games in the Atari Portable thread - worked great! I used an old 512 MB SD card - which was still 90% empty after copying all those games.
