Near-freezing temperatures and the threat of rain weren't enough to keep 130 gamers from coming "Back to the Backyard" for SC3's latest arcade party on Saturday, November 10. After two successful but more formal events at an Alhambra gallery, the Southern California Classic Collectors decided to return home to a private backyard in Claremont, CA. Commercial venues and big events have their place, but sometimes lack that sense of "just a bunch friends getting together" that SC3 is all about. Well, we definitely felt that sense again at this event, and we think our attendees did too. It was good to be back. But it was COLD. Thankfully, the rain that had fallen slowly but steadily throughout Southern California for two days prior stayed away on the day of the event. Temperatures were a different story. It dipped into the 40s at times – practically Arctic levels for those of us accustomed to SoCal's sunny weather. The chilly temps didn't seem to get people down though. They crowded into the garage arcade, huddled around the Satan's Hollow machine for warmth, or otherwise kept moving by running from the arcade games to the console games to the trade tables and back again. The cold contributed to the event breaking up a little earlier than normal – 11:30 rather than the traditional midnight – but that was OK since we had opened two hours earlier than previous parties. This schedule works well for wintertime events, and we plan to stick to it in the future. Since this was our first backyard party in two years and the rain interfered with our setup plans, a few things went more roughly than we hoped. The biggest snafu was the last pizza pick-up we had scheduled for 10 p.m. Our designated pizza guy drove to the restaurant, only to find it was closed! By the time he got back, it was getting too late to devise an alternate pizza plan, so we kind of dropped the ball there at the end, food-wise, and we apologize. (But in our defense, who could have guessed that a pizza place would close at 10 p.m. on Saturday?!) We also owe a big thanks to Eric B., who helped us open the event by providing four pies from Petrillo's, one of the best pizzerias in the state. Our stomachs thank you, Eric. We also had slightly fewer arcade machines than normal due to the threat of more rain. Luckily, Steve A. helped out a lot in that department by bringing a cabinet containing a Blue Elf multi-SNK cartridge. Kalan H. brought Satan's Hollow and Eliminator, an awesome vector game that had never appeared at SC3 before. Rik M. provided his usual complement of early '80s handhelds and a super-rare Adventurevision. Robert B. brought the Commodore love with an Amiga CD-32 and an MC-116. Of course our expected plethora of home consoles was up and running – 14 of them this time around. The cold didn't bother them one bit. Games weren't the only attraction however. Director Jeff Von Ward showed his upcoming documentary film The Space Invaders: In Search of Lost Time, a fascinating look into the world of arcade game collectors (something we can relate to for some reason). How good is this movie? A crowd of people sat still, in metal chairs, in 40-degree weather, to watch it. And they came back to keep watching it after the projector screen got knocked over accidentally and the film had to be restarted. More information on the film can be found on its official site. Thanks to Jeff and everybody else who brought games and supplies. We'd also like to thank all attendees who chipped in a few bucks to the kitty jar. Your contributions pay for this event and enable us to keep SC3 running smoothly. Special thanks to Ian W., who helped immensely during setup, teardown, and even during the event. His comfy-looking Tron hoodie was also an inspiration to all of us struggling to keep warm. Despite the cold, the trade tables were hot. There was the usual action of classic cartridges and systems changing hands, in addition to a few choice rarities (someone had a boxed NES Donkey Kong Jr. Math for example). Some big items could be seen too, including a Steel Battalion controller and an X-Arcade panel. GameGavel was once again on hand, raffling off goodies ranging from a boxed Tele-Pong console to an Omnibot toy robot to the board game based on Sega's Turbo coin-op. As collectors, it always thrills us to see all the swag and all the other folks who want it. It was great to see it all back in the backyard. It felt good. So just how eager were folks to attend this event? So much so that they kept showing up on Sunday... well, one of them, anyway. George R., one of our good friends and regular attendees, got mixed up on the date and arrived the day after the event, literally at the moment we'd just finished tearing down and packing up everything. He'd driven some distance to be there too. Fittingly, it was like the ending of a John Hughes movie from the '80s. Thanks to everyone who attended and supported SC3 this past weekend. It was one of our best ones yet! We got approx 130+ people showed up to play retro games, eat pizza, hang out, buy/sell/trade games. It was great being "back in the backyard" once again after 2 years. Thanks to Kalan Harvest and Steve Applegarth for bringing some more arcade games. Full recap coming soon but in the mean time, enjoy this nice article about this past SC3 weekend from Roger Barr of I-Mockery http://www.i-mockery.com/shorts/sc3-2012/ Some video's...

******PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A PRIVATE PARTY AND NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC***** The long wait is over! We are pleased to announce that the next SC3 Arcade Party will take place on Saturday, November 10, 2012. And because you asked for it – or rather, demanded it, loudly and repeatedly – we are going "back to the back yard" and throwing a house-party at the same Claremont residence that hosted our events from 2006 to 2010. That's right: once again we'll be cramming several dozen arcade machines and classic home consoles into a lucky home's back yard. If you attended one of the old parties, you know it'll be tight, but it'll be great! We had a blast with our events at Nucleus Gallery, but we decided to return to our former home for a number of reasons. First, the use of a public venue resulted in greater expense. Second, the venue was further from where most of our machines are housed, leading to even more expense and logistical problems (plus moving that many heavy machines that far is just a pain). But most importantly, we really missed the old house-party vibe. Conventions and pay-for-admission events are great, but they lack that sense of "just a bunch of friends getting together to hang out and play games" which is so central to what SC3 is all about. So we're going back to basics, making SC3 less about "the event" and more about the fun. With that in mind, we've made some changes from the old format. Here are the details: Event Schedule The November 10th party opens at 4 p.m. and lasts until midnight. Note that the 4 p.m. start time is two hours earlier than previous backyard parties. Although this event will end at the same time as previous parties – midnight – all the action will move out of the house at 9 p.m. Attendees of previous events might remember that we usually have games available on a big 65" HDTV inside; that will end at 9 p.m. so that the people who live in the house can get some rest! Food Schedule SC3's food of choice – pizza – will be served at this event. We will be making pizza runs at scheduled times ONLY. Our initial pizza schedule is: 4 p.m., 7 p.m., and 10 p.m., but is subject to change; we'll have the final schedule posted clearly during the event. Please make a note of it so you don't miss out on the deliciousness! We'll also have some snacks, cold sodas and water on hand. Typically the liquid refreshments last the night but the snacks tend to be eaten quickly, so be sure to grab something as soon as you're hungry! Donations Are Appreciated! Moving back to a private venue does cut down our costs, but please remember that our pizza and electric bills are still substantial! We greatly appreciate your donations – in fact, we need them in order to keep SC3 humming. We humbly request a donation of at least $5 per adult attendee, and we thank you in advance. RSVP Today! If you want to attend, you must fill out this RSVP form. If your registration is accepted, you will be informed via email. Simple! Remember, it's essential that you RSVP ahead of time – space is limited at this location and we need an accurate headcount! Thanks as always for your support and remember to keep an eye on this site for more announcements! - The SC3 Team RSVP form http://www.sc3videogames.com/rsvp.php Event page http://www.sc3videog....com/future.php Some pics from past SC3 events

California Extreme 2012 July 28-29, 2012 **** Hyatt Regency Santa Clara **** Hotel Registration and Show Registration coming soon! **** Click on Pictures, Testimonials, and Stories for information about previous shows. 2011 Pictures have been posted - take a look! Why A Game Show? Arcades were once a fixture on the American urban landscape, and games were plentiful in rural cities too. The closest heir of today is the so-called "Family Entertainment Center", which is populated with a myriad of devices designed only to take your coins quickly and leave you with a pile of tickets, which you exchange for cheap, trashy toys. This is entertainment? California Extreme was born with a desire to share fun coin op games that are in the hands of private collectors, and to hopefully spread the word that pinball machines were once plentiful, and that videogames were not synonymous with "martial arts" and violence. Buy/sell/trade! The show is a great place to bring games you want to sell, and also a good place to add to your collection, or even start it! Not all games will be for sale; many collectors bring games to show (or show off!) that they would never sell. So .. Can I play the stuff? Yeah .. Everything is on free play. You can play from the moment you arrive until we shut off the power at closing -- Play as many games as you want, in whatever order you want to. There are *HUNDREDS* of games, all set to play for free. This is a your chance to try those older games, or the newer games that you'd never put money into in an arcade. There are also many games that never got produced, and are very hard to find. http://www.caextreme.org/

HOKEY SMOKES!!! SC3 is this Saturday!!!

In all the years we've been hosting SC3 gaming events, the most frequent request we've heard (other than holding our events more often) is for SC3 T-shirts. Every time, we keep hearing the refrain: "Why don't you have T-shirts?!? I want a T-shirt!" Seriously, it's like you have a fear of empty closet space or something. Well, we are finally answering your heartfelt pleas. Announcing the first-ever SC3 T-shirt: Featuring the great work of our design master Geoff, and inspired by the arcade classic Zoo Keeper, this elegant apparel is guaranteed to cover your torso in style! The theme of this tee is "Breakin' Out of the Backyard," a reference to earlier SC3 events when we crammed way too many people and game machines into an unfortunate backyard in Claremont. With Nucleus Gallery's help, we've grown beyond that. The T-shirt is a way to commemorate this achievement, which all of our friends have made possible. T-shirts are available in S/M/L/XL/XXL. The cost is $20 apiece. You may order them online through the Nucleus Store or buy them on the show floor on October 1st. Quantities are limited! No seriously.... we mean it.... VERY LIMITED QUANTITIES. Order your shirt here... http://www.gallerynucleus.com/detail/12528 Havent bought your ticket yet to SC3?? You can get it here... http://www.gallerynucleus.com/event/319 Our home page... http://www.sc3videogames.com/ ~the SC3 Team!

Putting on shows such as SC3 is a labor of love. It literally takes us working 4 days from 8am - 11pm (sometimes longer) to get everything set up. Thats why SC3 needs volunteers for our Oct 1st gathering!! We need a total of 8 volunteers to help us on Thursday Sept 29th through Oct 2nd with various tasks. We need 2 - 4 volunteers to help move arcade cabinets from collectors homes and deliver to SC3 on Thursday Sept 29th and return them on Sunday Oct 2nd. This will be an almost all day task. We have two small trucks picking up arcade cabs from various arcade collectors so we need 1 or 2 volunteers per truck. Plus you get to hang out with THE APPLEMONKEY!! The remaining volunteers will consist of setting up tables and chairs and hooking up TV's and Consoles and other various tasks. More volunteers we get, the faster (and smoother) it will go. All volunteers will of course will get a free entrance to SC3 and will be invited to our pre-SC3 Friday night pizza party also at Nucleus. Other comps may be in the works!! We encourage all arcade collectors to transport their own games if they have the means. More the merrier and this will cut down our cost and time to pick up arcade games with our trucks. Collectors who bring arcade cabs will also get a free entrance to SC3 and our pre-SC3 Friday night pizza party. Please get back us if you wish to help out your friends at SC3!! ~the SC3 team!!

Admission to the event is $10 if you pre-register online or $15 at the door. Visit the Nucleus event registration page to order your tickets. Greetings, Programs! I am a totally hopeless and helpless wacko-nutty fanatical-idiot when it relates to Tron. I claim to be a bigger fan of the Tron franchise than anyone on this planet.... except maybe Jay Maynard (the Tron Guy). To celebrate a new addition to this franchise in almost 30 years, I will participate in a ritual that only true fans would dare to attempt. If you aren...'t crazy about Tron now, you still have till December 18th to get that way... so you are invited to participate. The agenda is simple: 2pm - Watch the ORIGINAL Tron movie from 1982 at The Complex / Dorie Theater. Limited to 55 seats with only about 20 seats left! Please PM me to RSVP this- 6476 Santa Monica Blvd. Hollywood, CA 90038 - $5 donations please. 5pm - EAT at Miceli Restaurant Hollywood (walking distance from the El Capitan Theatre). SC3 Goes Nuclear!!!! New Venue, New Location, New Attractions, Old Games (just the way we like 'em!) SC3 is teaming up with Nucleus, an art gallery and store in the northern L.A. area, to bring you a blowout arcade and console event. The party will take place on Saturday, March 5, 2011, from 12 noon to 12 midnight, at the Nucleus gallery in Alhambra, CA. Admission to the event is $10 if you pre-register online or $15 at the door. ...Visit the Nucleus event registration page to order your tickets. Nucleus is already making a name for itself among videogamers by featuring cutting-edge exhibits of game-inspired artworks and live nerdcore/chiptune concerts. Now it will be introduced to classic gamers in a big way as SC3 brings over 40 classic arcade machines and dozens of vintage home consoles to the exhibit floor for 12 hours of pure, nonstop gaming. Live music, featuring 8-bit and chiptune artists, will begin late in the evening. An all-videogame version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" will challenge your knowledge of gaming trivia. Traditional SC3 attractions, including SC3-TV, '80s music, a video game trading room, and Rock Band will also return. Free refreshments will not be provided at this event – food and drink are not allowed within the gallery – but food trucks will be offering fare outside, and there are any number of local restaurants within easy reach of the venue. SC3 is truly excited about this. It's the next logical step for us. If you attended our previous SC3 party back in April, you saw 200 people cram into a backyard in Claremont for six hours of classic gaming mayhem. It was amazing, but beyond capacity. We knew we'd need an actual "facility" for our next event. So we began the search, and eventually found Nucleus. Of course hammering out all the details has taken time – that's why we missed our traditional September event – but Nucleus has been fantastic about everything. They're embracing the gaming community; even SC3's hardcore retro nerdiness doesn't scare them. The result is going to be the biggest, best SC3 event you've ever seen! Stay tuned to this web site, and in particular the Future Meeting page, for more details as they become available. You must register at Nucleus to attend this event. http://www.sc3videogames.com/highlights/2010_04_24.php Whoever said eight is enough? It's hard to believe, but the April 24, 2010, party was the eighth time that SC3 has crammed dozens of classic arcade cabinets, scores of vintage consoles, and teeming multitudes of gamers into a strained backyard in Claremont, CA. Over these last four years of biannual arcade parties, SC3 has continued to grow -- way, way beyond the small get-togethers we had in the group's early days. Looking back to the first arcade party in 2006, it seems obvious that we didn't realize what we were getting into. Luckily we've been receiving a lot of help from our friends. This time we're particularly indebted to Sergio -- you may know him as The Applemonkey -- who really came through in the catering department. Sergio and his friend Jimmy supplied us with a smorgasbord of hot dogs and hamburgers, which were grilled on the spot and served by lovely chefs Shea and Sabrina. It was like a real life version of BurgerTime, only nobody had to walk on the buns first and the condiments weren't tryingto kill you. On second thought, it wasn't really like BurgerTime at all, but it was tasty. It was nice to have a main course other than pizza for a change. Big thanks to Serg and the gang! Food is important of course, but let's face it: you come to SC3 parties to play games, and our friends came through in that department as well. Longtime contributors Paul, Gary and Jason brought new-to-SC3 cabinets including Asteroids, Tank II and Pole Position. Rik from Electronic Handheld Game Museum came with a parcel of Coleco and other VFD tabletop games, which formed an electronic symphony of bleeps and boops when placed next to each other. Well, it was music to us, anyway. That's not all. Robert from the Fresno Commodore User Group showed up with Shredz64, an amazing amalgam of current and vintage tech that gives you the Guitar Hero experience... on the Commodore 64! Shredz64 is quite an experience: what could be better than rocking out to SID-chip versions of the Ghostbusters theme, or "Axel F." (the Beverly Hills Cop theme), or hits from The Eagles? Thanks Robert! Of course, if you wanted a modern music-game session, you could play Rock Band on the 65" HDTV, thanks to Chris G. Mike from GameGavel.com (formerly ChaseTheChuckWagon.com) showed up with his usual pile of raffle and giveaway items. He also brought an Omega Race cabinet -- which, believe it or not, was the first cabaret we've ever had. A few other new-to-SC3 arcade games debuted at this event, including Journey, the rare laserdisc title Inter Stellar Laser Fantasy, and the Cinematronics vector games Cosmic Chasm and Warrior, which is so loud even on its quietest setting that we had to disable the audio or risk getting busted for disturbing the peace. Tony V. brought a working conversion kit for the animated game The Act, a title that never fails to attract a crowd. Thanks Tony! Tony G. brought lots of stuff for show and tell such as proto boards (including the original prototype of Ghosts 'n Goblins), a NeoGeo development cart, pics from SNK and Romstar -- the list goes on. The only disappointment in the coin-op department was Death Race, which developed screen problems right before the event started. Oh well, we hear that game encourages violent behavior anyway. Home consoles were out in force this time, so much so that we couldn't even hook up the PS1 because we ran out of table space. We had 12 home consoles this time around, plus Rik's VFD table. Joe Zbiciak's Space Patrol, the latest Intellivision homebrew game, was available for play for the first time. Also, if you happened by the Atari 2600 table at the right time, you'd have seen the world-record $30,000+ Air Raid box. Yes, the owner brought it... just don't tell his insurance company. Less-expensive but still-awesome console attractions included new Super NES and Genesis multicarts, which, along with the other multicarts we normally have, ensured that there was no shortage of games. And good thing too -- with over 200 people showing up to this event, we needed all the games and help we could get! Thanks to everybody for making SC3 such a success. We never expected it to reach this level. The Future If you attended this event, you probably heard talk about SC3 moving to a new location. This talk is true; it is highly unlikely we'll hold another party in that Claremont backyard. Let's face it: attendance has been steadily climbing with each event, and with over 200 guests showing up this time, that backyard just isn't going to cut it any more. It's been great, but now we need to find something different. We already have an idea or two in mind, but nothing is definite yet. We have a lot of research to do. Because of this, we have decided not to announce even a tentative date for the next event. There will be a next event; we're just not sure when or where yet. Please keep an eye on our Future Meeting Page and Forums for details as they become available. Check out all the pics that we collected here... http://good-times.webshots.com/album/577466718JOqCDD?vhost=good-times

Hello SC3 friends!! I am going to be DJing at the screening of the documentary 'The Rock-afire Explosion' movie on Nov 5 @ the Cinefamily located at the Silent Movie Theater 611 N. Fairfax Ave in LA. I am also bringing a hand full of my arcade games from my collection to be played after the movie! Cinefamily will also be screening Thrash's Rock-afire music videos -- plus we'll be recreating Showbiz Pizza for one night only on our back patio, complete with a gallery of vintage arcade machines! About the Rock-afire Explosion doc: In the early '80s, kids all over the country dragged their parents to Showbiz Pizza (created by Atari founder Nolan Bushnell) for the rides, games, and the animatronic rock band The Rock-afire Explosion. Created by 23-year-old prodigy Aaron Fechter, The Rock-afire Explosion amazed children and adults alike before being mysteriously pulled from showrooms and replaced by the now popular Chuck-E-Cheese in the early nineties. Still profoundly affected by his experience at Showbiz Pizza, small-town disc-jockey Chris Thrash sought out Fechter nearly twenty years later and purchased a full Rock-afire band of his own. After some clever modding on Thrash's part, the band was once again performing for millions, this time on YouTube, to the likes of Lil Wayne and MGMT! The Rock-afire Explosion reveals how Thrash revived this fallen robotic gem, alongside the heart-wrenching rise and fall of Fechter's former 300-employee, $20 million-per-year venture. Click on the link below to buy tickets and for information. http://www.cinefamily.org/calendar/thursday.html#rock Hope to see you there!!!
