I had the idea to do something like this, back when I was 13. But a quick look showed me I'd be better off for the trouble to design something original from the ground up. Especially since ANTIC and POKEY to this day are still pretty much black boxes. But I admit the A8 has influenced my methodology. Nothing funnier than seeing a MC68008 based SBC with a memory map that looks like an A8 writ large.

So I guess as it sits, better to make the non-flash MyIDE cart?

Okay, simple question. Would this likely work with candle's Ultimate 1mb providing SDX and an Atarimax MyIDE cart? Any caveats?

I'm fine with just modding the existing hardware within reason. Past that point, that's what an Amiga or a PC are for. That said, PBI could use a serious upgrade.

XL/XE for me. The XLs were certainly better built, but the 130XE in the extra RAM and ANTIC banking department was what the 1200XL should have been.

Yep, that'd be pretty much it? But I still think some kind of "PBI 2.0" standard is in order. I agree with both. It is in order, but how can you get an agreement about it. Wouldn't it be best to just survey them and someone like MG or Curt make the call? Well the first thing is to figure out what, if any additional signals are needed for new hardware ideas, etc.

The only issue I can see with devising a standardized "PBI 2.0" is getting all of the most prolific hardware designers to sit down and begin hashing it out. That alone gives me mental images of herding cats. But it might be a good use for an IRC chat. Anyone game?

I'm going to third Candle's proposal. PBI needs an upgrade. Though it might be a case of adopting an Amiga-like approach with a type of video slot, or a mix of PBI 1.0 and PBI 2.0 slots.

SIO2HD FDD I could go for. But for HDD use, why opt for slow SIO speeds when there are fast HDD options such as MIO or MyIDE? And both of those can use modern, available HDDs, while ST-506 has been obsolete for decades, the drives are a pain to set-up, they're rare, old, as noisy as a dot-matrix printer, unreliable, and are going to cost you more than even an old IDE or SCSI-I drive.

Check connector polarity. The PSU on the Stacy is negative post, not positive post like nearly all modern PSUs. That said, a Stacy PSU is 12v @2A. FYI, you can use a Sega Genesis PSU in a pinch to power a Stacy. But I wouldn't recommend it for daily use.

Or use a basic compiler and alter the ASM output accordingly for fitting to a cart.

As someone who has both, I'd say get both. I used an Amiga A4000/060 as my primary desktop until 1997 even after I built my first PC to run Linux.

Now a BB would be a real rarity. Those are so rare, I'm going a bit of micro-controller silliness to see if a replacement for the BB with floppy board is feasible.

Put me down for one. And I'd opt for the HQ board. Makes your life easier and mine too.

Having received this pre-installed on a 1200XL from KJMann, all I can say is "OMFGWTFBBQ!" Best. A8. S-Video. Output. Ever. The 1200XL will be getting VBXE when availability and economics make it possible, but I'm thinking my 130XE will be getting one of these too.

Okay, it missed the ST which was influential if only due to Tramiel using it to start the price war which PC clones won. It also missed the influence of the MSX machines and TI (whose entrance into the home computer market led to Commodore's price war tactics in retaliation for TI's tactics in the earlier electronic calculator price war against Commodore). As for a proper comparison for the Atari 400/800, I tend to agree with doing it by proper time period. The 400 was a direct competitor to the VIC20, and the 800 was a direct competitor to the Apple 2+/TI. The direct competitor from Atari for the C64 would be the 1200XL/800XL.

Got mine and it works, though I'll need to give the board a close look to see how the 800XL OS upgrade is implemented before looking into internal MyIDE and VBXE.
