How?  Easy- most of the news articles, TV presentations, youtube videos, social media- all point to Atari's own website.   That DOES mean something.  It's a guess...backed by logic.

That doesn't mean much. They can go to Atari's website to find information on it, but they can just as easily order it from Amazon, especially if they're ordering more than one item. Again, your number is nothing more than just a guess, and I'd say probably not an accurate one at that.

I think it's safe to say at least 5k are sold on Amazon globally so far.

I'd also think it's safe to say that just as many have been sold on Atari's own website.

So yea... I'm thinking 10k+ already.

How are you coming to that conclusion? No one here (except for Atari employees who have access to the data) has any idea how many have been preordered directly from Atari. Saying it's "safe to say" doesn't mean anything. I can just as easily claim that Atari has only sold 1k preorders through their website, which could be closer to the truth than the number you stated. At best, both numbers are uneducated guesses.

PiSTorm and V4SA are not competitors, both of them offers great possibilities (e.g. better sound and graphics resolution) and have its own pros and cons

I wasn't aware of the V4SA project, that one looks pretty cool as well. And yes, like you said, they're hardly competitors. If they can have all of these cool toys for the Amiga, then we can have them for the ST. I don't see multiple options being a bad thing.

  4. I love the whole idea of the PiStorm, and had been wondering why we hadn't seen anything like this as of yet for the ST...until I saw some of the replies on this thread. Why the snobbish attitude towards it? The PiStorm has a lot of advantages over many other drop-in replacements or emulation boxes, the biggest of which is that it allows you to continue using your original ST system while upgrading it with much faster speeds and other QoL improvements. Is it relying on emulation? Yes, but does that really matter? I'd be happy to lend a hand to the project if I had the expertise to do so, but unfortunately I don't even own an ST at the moment. it would be great if some others are able to lend a hand, and I hope uji isn't discouraged by the responses he's gotten so far.

As much as I love Zeppelin, I've never understood the desire for music constantly playing in a video game.  Even if it were Led Zeppelin, I think I'd get tired of it.  It's got nothing to do with the game.  Xevious is one of my favorite games ever (even though it abuses me) yet sometimes I would get annoyed with the constant background music cycle.

Usually I could ignore it and imagine that it wasn't repeating music but some kind of beeping noises from my ship's instruments or something, like having an R2 unit next to me that won't shut up about the battle.  Game music gets in the way of the action sounds and warning/instrument sounds depending on what's playing.

I've asked before but nobody really has an answer, do people require in-game music now?  Meaning if there isn't any then, fuck it, not interested in playing the game even if it's really good or has great gameplay?  That to me is crazy.  Of course I grew up with games that had only beeps that could be played in patterns and follow a melody but I never played a game because of the music.  When did that start?

A game about Vikings with "The Immigrant Song" as the theme would rock.

As far as music during gameplay, it depends on the game. Some games are better for it (Rome: Total War comes to mind, T2K, etc.), while others can be extremely distracting. Thankfully, most modern games give you the option to adjust the volume of the different audio elements or disable them entirely.

EDIT: Just to add, I agree about Xevious' music, although I know that's sacreligious to some. But I don't care, annoying is annoying.

  6. If I were still a global mod here, I'd tell everyone to chill and to stay civil. However, I'm not, so I'll just say that bringing some Led Zeppelin into this discussion is a good idea. And speaking of which, there's an awesome guy on YouTube who has a channel focused on Led Zeppelin, and he's done several series going over different parts of the band's past, including the post-Led Zeppelin eras of the 80s and 90s. If you're as into Led Zeppelin as I am, I'd highly recommend checking it out:

    Anyways, carry on.

Legitimate question, how are people eyeballing frame rates? How can one tell when a game is 57 FPS and when it hits 60?

It's the power of the fumes. Inhaling them allows one to drastically slow down the perception of time.

Myself and another Atari age member were discussing stuff on Xbox live.  We both love Atari 50.  Plus there is a lot of retro atari rivarly.

I have to ask is Albert the new Tommy Tallarico?

This is an asinine question. Albert has run this website for over 20 years and has been an active and reliable producer of homebrew games during that time. Not once has he ever promised something and then failed to deliver. To compare him to Tommy Tallarico in any fashion is beyond ridiculous.

  9. Why bother discussing physical media? In case some of you haven't realized, fast broadband access is pretty ubiquitous now. Besides, if you're trying to make a game that rivals AAA games on XBox and PS5 in size, then the VCS is probably not your target platform.

So back to topic, what is so impressive about the Bubsy 3D engine? I saw better 3D on Jaguar, with gouraud shadings and textures. ;-)

Actually the game looks very basic and boring.

That's always been my thoughts on that game as well. Of all games to want ported to the Jag, Bubsy 3D, well, has never been on my list.
