Quite untrue on both statements. I don't regularly use MESSUI, but make sure you do the following: - Assure coleco.zip is in your ROMS folder. - Audit that system and make sure the rom is detected. - Right click Colecovision, select properties and choose "Software" tab. Add the folder which contains your coleco games. Once chosen, use the Picker menu to browse for the roms that you wish to run. Otherwise, use the "Device" tab to mount a cartridge not detected. It shouldn't be much harder than that.

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=cottoh.zip You should be able to take it from there. The best way to search for things you are missing is use the "setname.zip" the emulator expects.

I don't see that at all with a current version. Delete the .CFG file for the game [ cfg/domino.cfg, cfg/tapper.cfg ] and try again. The only game in the driver that has "DIAL2" involved is Kick.

It seems there is a regression that was introduced somewhere after 0.138. Starting in 0.138u2 and through 0.139u1, the game sat at post and would not play. http://www.mametesters.org/view.php?id=3881 A fix was provided to allow the game to play in 0.139u2, but it looks like the sound is now missing. I'll post this on http://www.mametesters.org to make sure it gets logged for fixing. Tafoid The sound works fine for me in Rescue, Aponow, and Minefield. I'm using MAMEUI32 0.140u1. Maybe it's the 64-bit version that's doing it? interesting results after trying ChuckH's solution...only minefield's sound worked, then it went silent again after trying with 32bit MAMEUI. Well, that's just weird. I tried them again and all three have normal sound. I see they have tagged them as sound not working at MAME testers and confirmed. Maybe Tafoid will chime in with the answer. Not sure what to say. My main testbed is Windows XP - 32-bit and I never got any audible sound out of it since it broke (way back in 0.138u2). Not sure if the fix to make it boot again caused the sound issue or it's always been there. In my testing of all compiled versions I've made back to 0.139u2 (including development SVN's) do not have any sound effects in game. I don't test MAMEUI .. so if the problem might be multisession related, I'm not sure. Two other people I've asked about his game do not get any sound out of the game either. Ok, I've got an idea. Try this rom that I'm attaching. I tried a different Rescue rom and it didn't produce any sound but the one that I have does produce sound. See if it works for anyone else here. Sorry I tried to attach a file but it doesn't seem to work. Chuck There has not been any romset changes for rescue, minefld or aponow since they were added years ago so a romset cannot be the cause. The rescue and mindfld sets I have still show an original archive date of 2001. I can only assume that your mame versions are confused in some way, you might be using 0.138 instead (which had sound), or something else that cannot be explained fully. Perhaps it is a random bug, but there is most assuredly a bug in code that need to be fixed in any case. I have more information on possible causes in the bug notes: http://www.mametesters.org/view.php?id=4126

You need to provide what MESS needs for roms. The emulation will not start unless your romset called a7800.zip contains the following (copy/paste a -listcrc output): E:\mess>mess a7800 -listcrc 5d13730c 7800.u7 Atari 7800 (NTSC) a0e10edf c300558-001a.u7 Atari 7800 (NTSC) So, you need 2 files in the a7800.zip file and they must match the CRC-32 expected. If the CRC's to not match, the filename is uses as a fallback. Once you have created this ZIP, place it in your ROMS folder. In the most recent MESS installs, this is located in the same folder as MESS.EXE. For example: c:\mess\mess.exe , c:\mess\roms\a7800.zip. Then, start by using command-line mess a7800 -cart [cartridge] where [cartridge] is the filename (including the path) for the game you wish to run. Of course, the MESSUI simplifies this for those unfamiliar with the command-line interaction.

Are you using older artwork packs (the .zips contain an .ART file) or the modern packs (the .zips contain a .LAY file)? If you have the older artwork, you'll need to get the newer packs for any MAME version 0.107 or later. They are so much better looking than the old - it's like night vs. day. http://mameworld.info/mrdo/mame_artwork.html

This is already logged as a bug here: http://www.mametesters.org/view.php?id=759 As to when it will be fixed.. no idea.
-
Well, it depends what version of MAME you are running. After 0.116, external samples are not needed as the discrete circuitry for those certain sounds are emulated. Anything prior to that version, you need an external sample pack. You can pick them up here: http://samples.mameworld.info/ Navigate to "Older Samples" (on the left side) and you should see a link for Donkey Kong samples there.

I have to guess you don't use MAME that much? Anyway - check this link. It will show all you need for the set 'diehard': http://maws.mameworld.info/maws/set/diehard I also have to guess you don't have the ST-V bios files needed in your roms folder. You should be able to audit your game and MAMEUI tell you what is missing. Compare that to the list of files in the diehard.zip and stv.zip and fix accordingly.
-
Simply, you need the bios rom. When you use a real Bally/Astrocade, there are built in games/programs and a menu program which allows you to play your selected cartridge. This file needs to be in the ROMS folder (same as the Channel F one you mentioned). It cannot run without it. It should be called "astrocde.zip" and contain that astro.bin that is needed by MESS.

Well I hate to disparage anyone's work, but this is precisely why I gave up on MAME after MacMAME bit the dust. I used to run MacMAME.net, moderated the MacMAME message board, helped with the documentation and so on. But I found the post-MacMAME variants of MAME so user-unfriendly relative to MacMAME, I simply didn't want to deal with them. I still have a half-working version of MacMAME left, but nothing up-to-date. It'd be nice if someone put together a really good website about getting MAME to run on a Mac now, but I'm afraid it won't be me. That said, I can tell you this much: parents are the "master" set of ROMs for a given game. Many games saw numerous variations and revisions over their lives for various reasons (different copyright information for licensees, bug fixes, alternate maze/level layouts, illegal bootlegs, etc.), so the parent is what's considered the definitive version of that game. It contains all the ROMs needed to play that variation. A clone is one of the other variations, and generally only contains the ROMs that differ from the parent set. So clones are useless without their parents. They must have the parent set present in order to work. MAME will recognize these sets accordingly, if the ROMs are named properly and are put in the ROMs folder where it can find them, and it will use the ROMs it needs for a given parent or clone automatically. There are builds for MAME OS-X of SDLMAME, which is an SDL version of the baseline Windows MAME and kept up to date by R. Belmont and others. It's command-line/console driven - so you'd need to do some typing unless you pick up a simple front-end. Roni keeps a PPC build of MAME OS-X up to date for use. There is also a link to a capable front-end (MAMETunes). http://sdlmame.parodius.com

Anything MAME 0.127 or later requires a new XML style cheat format. The old "cheat.dat" file can be used for any version prior. You can get the latest cheat XML archive from Pugsy's Cheat Forum - in particular, this link: http://cheat.retrogames.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3110 Just take the CHEAT.ZIP file out of the downloaded archive and place it in the root of your MAME install - in the same folder as MAME.EXE. Like before, the -cheat command-line trigger will allow you to have the CHEAT item come up in your TAB menu while emulation is running.

All you've mentioned are partially emulated with MAME, just not at all perfectly as of yet. Eventually, as time goes by, more intensive research and faster computers will aid the documentation process. With documentation often comes playability. When it comes to emulation, you just need to be patient and understand one thing.. Emulation is not magic! It requires intensive research by many individuals to understand what the original code is doing to allow an emulator to replicate is going on. MAME is, first and foremost, a documentation project and not a "free" game player. It's best known for assisting original cabinet owners to identify, correct and repair problems that have risen up over time. Through MAME's goal of documentation and understanding - hundreds of machines over time have been literally resurrected. If you simply want to play games, all of these you've mentioned have very ample home console versions - be it on the Saturn, Dreamcast, Playstation 1 and 2 and even latest gen systems. Most of these ports are accurate recreations of the original game, not emulation. Again, emulation should never be thought of as a 'free alternative' as that is not what MAME is about. For the most part, Games which are not emulated well can be narrowed down to some core reasons: - There is a lack of understanding of the hardware involved - Some CPUs or other chipsets on the original printed circuit board (PCB) are unknown or have no documentation available - Encrypted game code or other functions - Unknown communication protocols between PCB components. - Missing/bad original rom chip data from PCB (bad rom chips are common in the arcade industry) - Rom chips which were not able to be read by normal reading methods and require a process known as "decapping" which generally destroys the original chip and is a costly procedure to actually do. - Hardware required for original game to run is too much for the most advanced computer to handle on a software only emulation level. In the end, time and effort are needed by many to be able to replicate hardware enough to allow a game to be playable on a computer. If people only want to play and not put the effort in to document and understand these games - it might never get done.

I downloaded it but it seems you need a few DLL files and some plugins. I've gotten everything installed but I get an error when I try to run a game (using a CD). I'll play with it a bit more the next few days..... My humble opinion would be to use "pSX" - http://psxemulator.gazaxian.com Every bit as compatible as ePSXe without all that Plug-In, Reconfiguration and per-game hack nonsense. Just need the BIOS and you are set to go. Your error with CD's might very well be related to an uninstalled ASPI layer. You can visit http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/speed/softwar...i_471a2_exe.htm and get that package which should cover your OS. Also, if you have Nero, this layer should already be installed.

I enjoy the chiptunes and emulated music immensely - thank you. I have yet to find a plug-in or player that can play these back at the speed I remember as all I seem to get is out at a slower speed (50hz/PAL) compared to (60hz/NTSC) which I'm accustomed to. Has anyone come across any solutions? Thanks! Tafoid

Which of the 'last gen" consoles do you own?
Tafoid replied to Rhindle The Red's topic in Poll Forum
Add me to he growing "Dreamcast Only" list Tafoid -
For me, the Dreamcast is my last (most current) console. If I had to choose a current gen console to get - I would opt for a Wii given the game selection and prices currently. Tafoid
