I think it has to do with where the squares are. Maybe you have to pay attention to a certain color before you do anything with the other. I need another quote thing from Pitfall Harry.

How do you know if you're registered? Do you have to go to the secret website that tells you the details and the contest and e-mail you? Or do you just have to post on the topic like so? Yes, this is completely normal for Activision games to wear away like this. It's called actiplaque, and is a big problem on Activision carts. I'd not make a big deal about it.

So basically what Ben is saying is that all the letters and things we find in different pictures can lead to other clues. Just try to make out what the clues are saying. GREYINK could mean go to the grey link or something. Really I have no clue of what GREYINK means but do you?!?! And yes it is useful to use tools such as Aimation Shop for the job.

I'm stumped. I use a program to look at close objects and animation frames and I still can't find anything. Can Pitfall Harry give us a clue to think of next or something. Plus, above the manual looking picture of Pitfall Harry swinging on the vine on the Pitfall map page, there seems to be some x's and t's.
