5. This thing runs HOT! I had to put the PS3 on its own shelf in my cabinet to keep it from melting the console next to it with its red hot exhaust. Looks like I'll be able to keep my family room warm this winter just by playing PS3 games.
The key is that it doesn't run hot.
All that hot air is blown out quietly and effectively by the great cooling system in there.
The key word there is quietly. My cousin got his 360 back from being repaired and noticed that the fan was even louder than before.
Maybe they upped the fan speed to help keep it cool, not sure.Anyway, congratulations Tempest. I hope you enjoy your new PS3. If you decide to run folding@home while your PS3 is idle we would love to have you (and anyone else who is interested) in our Atari Force group. While f@h is running, just hold down the square button to see the controls. You can change your donor name and join a team under the Identity option. Our team # is 56067. I've been runnning my PS3 for 3 weeks straight, 24 hours a day. When I'm not playing Oblivion, demos or watching videos it's been folding. I did reset it 2 times, so we'll see how it does in a few more weeks of running constantly.

I'm still waiting for Gauntlet and Rampart myself.

-
About the only real difference between the PS3 and the 360 is the fan noise.

I don't know if there are any good package deals out there. Usually they include games you don't want or 3rd party items that aren't too good anyway. I bought mine at Best Buy since I got $5 off coupons through their reward zone program. I'll let you know if I see any other good deals.

Does anyone know how good the PS1 BC is on the PS3? I know 99% of the PS2 games work just fine, but what about the PS1 games?
Tempest
I played Spider-Man and Tomba 2 on the PS3 and they worked fine.
-
If it included PS3 games I probably would have bought MUA and COD3. Oh well.
-
The only other factor you might consider is system reliability. I only personally know 2 people with 360's and they both had the ring of death. One got his in october and the other for christmas. So far there have been no reports of dead ps3's that I have seen.

I know when I moved a few years back I started having all kinds of problems with my electrical devices. Turns out it was a power issue. Purchasing a UPS system solved all my problems.
In fact after it managed to kill the hard drive in my original xbox (one I spent many hours putting stuff on). I went and got a UPS for all my consoles since my son uses them the most.
Line conditioners are always a good idea when dealing with electronic equipment.
My cousin's 360 took a dump this past weekend while he was playing Crackdown. Hopefully he gets a replacement that lasts a lot longer.

Positive views of the PS3 are few and far between these days, but this one is pretty reasonable:

Soon to follow, a brand new episode of ..... When Trolls Attack!

-
For someone who isn't interested in the PS3, you sure spend a lot of time posting in the PS3 forum.
Some might call that trolling.
People often do what they do best. Farmers farm, programmers program and whiners whine. It's just the way it is.

I checked cpuwiz's link again and the 23556 active PS3's are delivering 577 TFLOPS. It's nice to see people helping out on Stanford's project.
-
I started a team named Atari Force.
If anyone would like to join, pm me for the group number.

Wow, this place has had some insane increasingly idiotic hate ranting lately, but this has now officially gone over the top.

I agree. Posting anything remotely interesting or positive will always get replies from people so filled with hate they can't see straight. Here I thought Stanford's project was an interesting idea, but according to at least one person, how dare they try to learn anything.

It's hard to complain about the folding project, because hey, who wants to defend cancer? I know I don't, but I still think this is a rather tasteless approach to selling a game system.
I think all this adds up to a lot of obnoxious, overreaching hype, like back in 2000 when Sony told us that the Playstation 2 could be used in Iraq as a weapon of mass destruction. On one hand, Sony's finally making good on its tall promises by offering SOME proof of its claims, but on the other, there's nothing the Playstation 3 can do for cancer research that couldn't be done BETTER with a PC or Macintosh.
Secondly, if this does happen to cure disease, who do you think is going to get all the credit? I can guarantee you that it won't be John Thasselhatch from Oak Falls, Nebraska, who left his PS3 on for months, but Sony itself. On top of that, who's to say that this research won't become the intellectual property of Sony? You might feel charitable enough to help cure cancer by leaving on your PS3 until it melts, but I strongly doubt that Sony itself will be as generous in distributing that cure.
No thanks. I say that if you feel that strongly about the issue, just give the $600 directly to your favorite cancer charity. Much more will be accomplished.

First of all, pull your head out.
No-one even implied this was a reason to buy a PS3.
Why are you so worried about who would get credit if something does come out of it? It's Stanford's project so they would get the credit. Apperently with your short sighted little temper tantrum you don't want to see any progress against these health issues. I, on the other hand, don't have any problem helping someone with a project to increase their knowledge.

Still waiting to get mine in the mail. Anybody have some initial thoughts on the PS3 version or are you too busy playing?
-
"Such decisions run counter to our policy of consumer protection which seeks to ensure that all of our consumers have an equal opportunity to purchase PlayStation 3."
They shouldn't worry. In about 2 weeks everyone WILL have an equal opportunity to buy a PS3 since they'll be sitting in stores collecting dust.

Don't think so. Europe is eagerly awaiting the PS3 and the press is not as bad as in the U.S. The PS3 is an alright product for a fair price.
And frankly I don't want to waste my money on an inferior product like the Xbox 360 which is prone to malfunctions and defects.
MS deserved some bad press for their poor quality assurance.
Maybe the new 'black' 360 people keep talking about will have better quality control. Third version is the charm right?

-
The only one I bought so far was Flow, just to see how well the motion control works. I have to say, it actually works pretty well.
A few others look interesting to me, but I really need to finish (and in some cases start
) quite a few PS and PS2 games. I will probably get Gauntlet 2 whenever that finally gets released. Oblivion comes out this week so it's not like I'll be bored.

It sounds like a worthwhile project. How much it will help out is difficult to tell. I'll probably let my PS3 work on these while I'm sleeping and at work. If anyone else is interested in this maybe we could start an AtariAge group.

Just thought I'd pass along the word that the demo for Hot Shots 5 is now available for downloading from the Japanese Playstation Store.
I've read nothing on whether the U.S. Playstation Store will be receiving it or not, so I'm downloading it now from the Japanese store rather than possibly missing it. Its available from Mar. 16th to May 7th and the screenshots from the game look really, really good!
Is it possible to connect to the Japanese playstation store on an American system?
-mike
No. He must have a japanese system.
From what I have read all you have to do is tell the PS3 you live in Japan and it won't know any better.

-
I received a strange e-mail today stating that the release date of my Oblivion pre-order was changed to 03/14/07?! I was pretty sure the official release date was the 20th but I guess I'll just have to see what happens.
-
I wonder how they will handle the beta? Will anyone with a PS3 be able to try it out, or only a select few?
Looks like I found an answer: http://www.homebetatrial.com/

It does look kinda interesting. I'd like to try it out just to see how it works.
-
Yeah a couple small continuity errors there.
1. For someone having trouble making ends meet they sure had no problems buying a $600+ dollar PS3.
Which....2. Was not technically released in the time period the episode was supposed to take place.
3. Playing a game not meant to be released till a half a year later.

But still it was kinda cool seeing that game. I didn't catch it right away because my mind was focused on something else at the time. Nice to see them include current tech in a show, even if it was a little bit "too" current.
The next epi of heroes also happens to be in the middle of my vacation. Hopefully my media center wont screw it up. It's been doing weird things lately.
I just hope I don't miss it because I forgot a new episode was going to be on. A friend of mine did that last time it disappeared for 6 weeks.

It looks interesting. I think it would be more appealing if it included a sesitivity adjustment for the tilt control.
