I'd say this is a good candidate. The improved sprites make a world of difference. http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/145198-playable-2600-dig-dug-arcade-gfx-hack/

Awesome work KevinMos3! I'm looking forward to making a run through Double Dragon again thanks to this! I appreciate all your efforts man. (and yea, Tomb Raider looks tasty too, too bad the Atari's resolution doesn't really lend well to Lara's *ahem* assets though... )

Great work KevinMos3! Definately looking forward to the end result, I was never really 100% happy with the sprites on Double Dragon to be honest... Some levels colors, artwork and the sprites could use some good tweaking. There has been another attempt to make them look better but I think I like your version better so far. Namely I like your player sprites, as they are still simular to the originals so I won't get screwed up trying to properly position a martial art move for an attack. Thanks for your efforts man, I'll definately keep a tab on this. Oh, if you need any reference for levels on the game, just check out my videos on ut00b for Double Dragon. (user Rkanum)

Indeed! My card ladies and gentlemen... for my last action on this turn I play this trap card on Pacfan97's account here!

Ahhh, tank j00 sir, I aim to please! Yea, I got bored one day on teh ut00b after they just introduced the narrative functions for the videos and figured I'd make the videos a little more entertaining. :D Glad you enjoyed them! That video is also my evidence for the currently "unofficial" world record high score for Double Dragon and it's also my currently personal best high score! (and I didn't even plan on that when I was recording it! ) Haha, I love LOLcats, can't you tell?

Hey there GideonsDad! Yes, Double Dragon is difficult, but not impossible... It's very tough though and the AI is very merciless, but thankfully predictable and stupid. If you want to check out how it's done, go on ut00b and check out my Atari 2600 videos on Double Dragon there.(look for the screenname "Rkanum") My best and most humble advice for you is to master the elbow smash, to the point you can pull it off to your left or right in a moment's notice. It's really the only way you'll ever get anywhere on Double Dragon for the 2600 IMHO.

Alright, I've read enough... I'm gonna put this as nicely and succinctly as I possibly can, in the immortal words of my dear mother: "You can crap in one hand and want in the other, see which one gets filled faster!" If you want a Jr. Hack'em bad enough, my humble suggestion is to SHUT yer bitchin' hole, start learning how to use batari code and create your own! Otherwise, you're wasting your typing here, thanks in advance for your understanding and cooperation.

Hey Yuppicide! Yes, it's by far the most impressive looking front end I've ever seen, very interactive and very customizable. The 3D Arcade front end is just screaming for some VR helments and gloves! As far as making your own arcade, yes, the abilities and software you need to do so to create your own arcades is quite steep to learn I imagine. FWIW my day job is running a CADD station in AutoCAD and even I'm pretty intimidated to try to learn that stuff. I could probably learn it eventually,(I'm a pretty fast learner thankfully) thanks to my education with CADD programs like AutoCAD and Microstation, but for anyone else not well versed in such software or something simular to a solid modeling program, I suspect the learning curve is steep. I've also learned over the years some people just can't visualize 3D well mentally and that's a huge stumbling block in working in a 3D program. However, you might be a exception! I never underestimate the power of a driven individual to accomplish something they desire. As the old saying goes, there ain't nothing to it but to do it! As far as modifing the existing arcades (like added or deleting machines, props, etc, etc.) thats fairly easy after a crash course on how to modify the support/config/setup files for the particular arcade. Oh yea, about the arcade museum, they sorta have a project like that on the forums, it's the 3D Arcade DVD project I believe, where supposedly almost all the arcades made to date are somehow "linked" from one arcade to another in a virtual enviroment. You should check that out too if you're interested. Oh yes, one last thing about the frontend, as far as I know, it's capabilities are ONLY limited by what your machine can render, i.e. how much horsepower is under the hood so to speak. I'm already pushing the boundary with my meek and rather dated computer running the Scapino Arcade. With that arcade enviroment and nearly 250 machines, I'm pushing it. I'm currently running a Athlon 64 2.2 Ghz w/ 2 gigs of DDR 400 and a Sapphire Radeon 3850HD and after a few games, it can start getting into a slideshow.

While this is not directly related, there is still a way to visit Peter's arcade guys if you never got to see it... Over at the 3D Arcade site hosted by Mameworld, a member of the forums there, Mike-80's has released his virtual arcade model of Peter's Lunacity Arcade for the FE-3D Arcade/Emulaxian frontend about a month ago! The arcade is pretty accurate to the machines, attention to detail in the arcade and even the ambient arcade sound is a literal recording of actual Lunacity arcade sounds! So if you haven't ever been to the real thing, you can at least get a taste of it. (scroll to the very bottom of the page) http://3darcade.mameworld.info/arcades/arcades.htm While the frontend is pretty difficult IMHO to setup and get running, the benifits definately outweight it's drawbacks of it's setup, it's an awesome frontend for MAME or any other emulators or simulators. Besides, if a knucklehead like me can set it up, I imagine some of you guys can! I have a huge 2-story arcade setup I've worked on for a couple of years now using Scapino's Arcade model with nearly 250 arcade machines and many extra models it in tied into my MAME32 install, it's one of my most favorite virtual enviroment/frontend to use! If you need help setting it up, the regulars on the forums there and even 3D Arcade's author (another Peter hehe) is there to help you set it up if you need help. Enjoy guys!

Interesting game, very cool concepts, great home brew piece of work! This is about as best as I could muster on short notice, too much stuff going on these past few weeks... 17,680

Blah. Interesting game concepts but horrid execution and lackluster gameplay totally ruin any hope this game has. Here's my pathetic attempt to enjoy this game... 3980 Bring on next week's game...

YESSSSS!!!! This is how I roll, twice!!! W00t! I honestly didn't think I could do it! I saw the credits thing flash above the score on the first rollover, I will have to roll the score twice again to try to do a screen catch of it as I didn't catch what it said... Dangit, I should have "filmed" this one like I did Double Dragon for you guys, but I didn't expect to pull this off tonight honestly! Here's a couple of screen captures I thankfully managed to take while I progressed: (without screwing up my game in the process ha!) Near the first rollover, 82,190 Near the second rollover, 97,630 (197,630) And right after the second rollover things get really hairy, your ammo decreases automatically even if you don't shoot!!! Final score: 208,903

Arg. So friggin' close to the Cap'ns mighty score. I will try again... I will say this about the game, you really have to work on a strategy/path on each stage. When you find one that works, stick with it! Also, when climbing that rope, don't fart around doing so. Those friggin' Crocs and Cavemen are very unpredictable in their movements, even a brief pause to try to stun one on a rope could mean in your long fall with the quick stop at the end. Oh yea, when climbing the rope to a new level and there is a Croc/Caveman above you, it's wise not to stick your head above the platform lest they may knock it right off... 44,190

A really cool little game! I've played this on MAME before, but amazingly, the 2600 does do it justice! I've been guilty of overlooking this game for the 2600 but man, I now kinda wish I had a copy of it back in the day! I'm digging it though, I'll have to try for a higher score later on in the week. 21880

Ahhh once again, many thanks Impaler! I've been using Z-Launch for some time for z26, but it was quite due for a replacement as it would error out when I launched games... x26 is pretty nice.
-
Thanks again dewd, for the comments and tip! I personally perfer z26 over Stella, but unfortunately z26 doesn't run in a windowed mode to my knowledge...(unless I'm wrong and need to go RTFM...) So I had to record the DD walkthru in Stella, but I prefer to game in z26, now I won't have to bust out the camera for screenshot!
-
Ouch... Who the heck still owns or uses a VHS?!?! Man... Well that sucks. Maybe I can send them a DVD or perhaps just a CD of avi footage like I did with the walkthru?
-
Alright, my final score before the week ends... I did this through z26 and tried to do a "print screen" capture but that unfortunately doesn't work too well I've found in the past, so I got my digital camera out and took a pic of the monitor. I dunno guys, you think I should send this in to Twin Galaxies? I figure D. Yancey may not be too happy about it...

Mad reflex and "twitch" skills man, I stand in awe good sir, I salute you! I was laughing though through most of the video because the action was so insane. The action gets so fast in that game it's crazy, it reminds me somewhat of some shooters I've played over the years, but nothing near that fast.
-
Haha thanks man! Glad I could give you guys some payback somehow. No problem dewd, glad I could finally show you guys this, I figured some of you would enjoy it. Indeed, the elbow smash is the key to owning in this version of Double Dragon.
