I think you'll find that it was Morgan who canceled the 5200 in May 1984. Kassar was sacked for insider trading in July 1983, so was not around when that decision was made.

He made a lot of mistakes towards the end of his run as CEO that were ultimately catastrophic for the company, but that certainly wasn't one of them.

Yeah considering my sources were limited mainly to Electronic Games Magazine and their editorial staff, Bill Kunkel, Arnie Katz (a.k.a. "The Game Doctor"), and Joyce Worley (RIP to all three of them), I had no idea of any of the business going-ons inside Warner or Atari, all I cared about was the damn games themselves. So thanks for the clarification on that.

  2. Ray Kassar.

He put out the 5200, the system that brought me to the Atari fold after the butchery that was the original 1981 2600 Pac-Man.

The 5200 SuperSystem was everything you wanted in an Atari gaming system. Yes, while most of her titles were mainly improved versions of the A8 titles there were some simply outstanding entries that were superior to the A8 versions (Centipede, Dig Dug, and Qix most notably) and also exclusive titles (Countermeasure, Space Dungeon, Robotron: 2084 and the RealSports series of titles), plus, the now-legendary CX53 Trak-Ball, a dual controller holder, and, later on, the CX55 VCS cartridge adapter that allowed 5200 owners to play 2600 titles. And a growing third-party lineup of titles too from Activision, CBS, Parker Brothers, and Sega, to name just a few companies who also put out games for her.

But Ray Kassar, just 18 months later after launching the 5200 during the 1982 World Series at that when the first commercials aired in between innings, decided to pull the plug on Big Sexy..... BAD MOVE!!! I don't know if it was Warner's move or if he did it on his own accord but we 5200 owners were pissed that he decided to not only do that but also to give the green light to (and too early at that!!!) launching the 7800, in which itself was delayed by another 2 years after its initial summer 1984 launch!!!

Talk about backstabbing and incompetence, that, was Ray Kassar.

Had the 5200 been given a fair chance I'll bet she would've sold as many if not more units then ColecoVision, both units had controller issues but those would be remedied by third party controllers from the likes of Wico and Coin Controls so let's not get into that, as 40 years later more companies have stepped it up to offer solutions for the 5200's controller woes.

Plus only 10 5200 games are on this so the real 5200 is still needed.  And the SD slot is not verified to run games and is only for save states currently.

I suggest you watch the video on this console that Gen X Grown Up made on his YouTube channel, he actually did load up a ton of games including several 5200 titles not on the GSP and they all worked. Now, will almost all of the titles that are not keypad-intensive work, that remains to be seen but from what I saw and heard on the video she is very impressive but Im not ready yet to put my vintage consoles up for grabs quite yet, she's got to go through the BIGHMW here to see just how many 5200 titles (and which ones including homebrews, very important here) she'll work with, 2600 and 7800 titles yes, but it's gonna come down to (after all the development and input from some of us is done) whether her Altirra emulator will also support A8/XL/XE titles as well as certain 5200-exclusive/superior titles.

Option 2 (assuming this is a Linux-based device) would be running Altirra under WINE.  This would make sense if A8 emulation is also included since both it and the 5200 could be covered by a single emulator.

That's an excellent suggestion, since it seems like (unlike AtGames) MyArcade takes input from their potential customers seriously (as evident of the comments in the video from GenXGrownUp, who I thought did a wonderful job on the clip) that maybe some of us should throw in OUR TWO CENTS and see if we can get A8/XL/XE support in that Altirra emulator segment of the GSP.

Looks like a pretty cool device! SD card to download additional games: Wow! Would definitely purchase this before the Atari 2600+.

I also, saw the video this morning, I'm both stoked AND skeptical about which 5200 titles will work on this unit but the overall capability of being able to run 2600, 5200, AND 7800 games on an SD card is an awesome thing and since my last post in the Atari General section on this same console I have begun to put together a list of 750 (maybe 900, meaning 300 of each) total titles (250 each) that I will load up on a microSD card to play on her that are not keypad-intensive but I'm looking forward to her release but also I want to see if she can play the majority of the homebrews and (in the case of the 2600 titles) ARM-based titles like Champ Games puts out for the 2600, hey it's certainly not another Flashback THIS TIME AROUND!!!

But hold the phone, I'm not yet gonna get rid of my vintage consoles yet, in case of any foul-ups involving certain 5200 titles not working properly with this console, but I'm sure since MyArcade seems like they (unlike AtGames) listen to their customer base and their ideas and/or suggestions, that this may not be the end of possible development of the Atari GSP, perhaps a trak-ball or mouse-like controller (for games like Missile Command or Centipede/Millipede) might be in the cards, as well as other designs of joysticks for those who may not be fans of the current stocked flight stick idea.

  6. The fact that it can play (almost) all 2600, 5200, and 7800 games (well we'll find out HOW MANY 5200 games she'll play as some were keypad-intensive) makes this a MUST-BUY!!! But, I definitely want to hold onto all of my vintage consoles before doing anything drastic but this will definitely be on my list of to-get things!!!

As for the joysticks to further quell any latency she may have I'll just simply get some 10-12 ft. long USB-C cords as I'm already used to wired controllers so I should have no problemo with that but a 3-in-1 (FIVE if you also include NES and Genesis as well) gaming system is great!!!

Now, whether she plays all homebrews on all 3 of the Atari platforms is another story, I'll be placing my advance order on the Atari GSP ("as in "GameStation Pro", I'll guess we can call her that) and we'll just then find out!!!

The YT algorithm has nothing to do with it. Your content isn't worth while and is of below minimum production value so nobody watches. It's really that simple.

I appreciate all of my supporters' output and that makes me want to step up my game, so to speak, but also I thought that I might have something good going if I developed more rounded-off talent if I develop more skills like doing all of those series, but yes I can always work on my game to fine tune it to make it better.

The 5200 was a sales disaster with a struggle bus controller that would be prohibitively expensive to recreate, literally four exclusive games, and simply no compelling reason to own one. At least half the library consists of arcade ports from a plethora of other companies that Atari would need to negotiate expensive new contracts to revive. It is simply not commercially viable to revive it. There is no more nostalgia for it in the mass market than there is for the Tiger R-Zone.

I don’t know if there is a market for 8 bit computer stuff but none of the other Atari video game systems is commercially viable. The notoriety and the mystery of the Jaguar probably make it #2. The Lynx is one of my favorite systems ever but I notice that in the Evercade community a good 1/3 won’t even give the best games on the system a chance.

The reason Atari keeps hammering the 2600 is that it’s the only thing the mass of consumers remembers and buys. Other systems, save for maybe the Atari 8 bits, are viable at the scale of the AtariAge store, sure, but not at the scale of mass factory production or sale in major retailers.

Where else are you going to find and/or play an official version of Keith Hayenga'a brilliant Tempest??? I tried to lobby to get and A8 conversion done for her because of all the anti-5200 sentiment and nobody would do it, not even Homesoft, the guy who is famous for making straight-up 5200-to-A8 conversions like he has done for years.

There are also a dozen or so other titles that are either exclusive to the 5200 or are improved from their original A8 counterparts that have yet to be back-converted, that list, is right here on these two posts:

Ray, stop hijacking the Q&A thread to ask about 5200 shit.  You know it's not the right place for it.

I wanted to get @TrogdarRobusto to support the 5200 in which the previous incarnations of Atari did not even bother to do besides I'm not gonna burn any bridges down as long as I keep it civilized and not confrontational, now relax it's all going OK so far as long as we're civil I think we'll finally see Big Sexy get her due, something she has waited over 40 years for!!!

  10. For @TrogdarRobusto

The unreleased Atari "5200 Jr." (a.k.a. the 5100 model no. CX5100) I mentioned in my previous post.

Please also note that if and when you do decide to put one out or do development on one, that please make sure that you incorporate a 4-port BIOS in her for full compatibility with all existing and future 5200 titles and also that she will fully support all future and current homebrews and both generations of the Atarimax Ultimate SD multicart and the 128-in-1 cart and USB cart too.

  11. @TrogdarRobusto IMPORTANT question regarding support for the 5200:

Will there, sometime in the short future some in house development of original 5200 titles that will be available on both cartridge and on ROM (.bin) format for purchase and as for accessories and/or replacement parts and service for existing vintage 5200 consoles and accessories like the CX53 trak-ball and the CX55 VCS (2600) adapter, will that also be ramped up again for the first time on nearly 30 years??? What about the possibility of a 5200+ in the short future as well as perhaps a smaller version of the 5200 much like the famed but unreleased "5100" (a.k.a. "5200 Jr." - model no. CX5100) prototype that came out in 1983 but was never released?

No offense at all, I agree with your post, but just wanted to point out that one element with regards to the forum.  The forum does have good mobile support, although the AtariAge theme isn't perfect in that regard.  Much better than with previous iterations of the forum.  The store with mobile is pretty terrible, though, another good reason to get the store moved to a new platform!

     ..Al

A couple of cool things would be both Atari and AtariAge apps, those logos would be cool on my arsenal of apps on my iPhone 8+

What Atari really needs to do is make a 5200 Big Sexy T Shirt!

it would probably need to be oversized for one thing!!! lol

They would be perfect for all of these girls who to wear over their minishorts or panties or whatever these daring young ladies wear underneath their oversized sweatshirts/t-shirts like Madison Beer used to wear a few years ago.

I always thought it meant BIGHairyMoonWalker

"BIGHMW" or "Big HMW", stands for "Big Heavy Metal Warrior" (in da house!).

For internet purposes "Big HMW" was combined as "BIGHMW" in 2002 when we first launched my official website "BIGHMW.com" and BIGHMW has stood all 21 years since as my official calling name and official user ID on pretty much every single message board and forum, and on almost all social media sites as part of the URL for their respective sites.

Hopefully, it involved the FBI or local authorities, and getting a no-contact order, stalker prevention stuff put in place.  After almost 40 years of this shit, I'd say it's about time.  Not sure what else will provide the needed reality check.

Nope. Cindy not doing anything to the benefit of my career for 20 years plus her unfriending me on Facebook and her disappearing from a most recent (what was supposed to be civil) PM on Facebook about her hosting a 40-year high school reunion along with several other of our classmates of ours sorta set the wheels in motion. That, and, Len Enders had been telling me all this time that she wasn't going to help me "get my foot in the door" in this business, in which lead to my total dissolvement of her ON MY OWN, there was no order or warrant or anything like that from any authority state or feds, I just threw up my hands and said "'f' it!"

  16. I sure hope this doesn't end up like the Tramiel era of Atari, I hope that this ownership group will encompass the entire 51-year history of this great brand and all of the great products and programs that have been put out for their entire family of computers and gaming consoles both home and portable and not just certain ones. What I mean is, that ST, 5200, Lynx, and Jaguar owners should be just as embraced as 2600, 7800 and 8-bit computer owners are.

  17. 3 minutes ago, Albert said:

I can appreciate the skepticism, there is a lot of history that the current Atari has to overcome to earn back the trust of the classic gaming community.

     ..Al

will they also provide technical support (like firmware upgrades, hacks, etc.) for the AtGames Flashback 9 and X series consoles to assure full-compatibility with all existing and future ROMs including ARM-based games???

I hope bumping this thread won't cause any confusion with the similarly named 2600+, maybe this should be renamed, but how is this project going? Have you already achieved your goals with it? Is it still only sold through individual orders?

I think you shouldn't have any problem with namesake as long as you use the word "plus" to describe your "2600 Plus" as opposed to using the plus sign like in the console being sold soon.

  19. Yes Stephen, in fact I talked to a couple of my co-workers at Safeway and they said it would mean less stress on me if I did exactly that, they said if I could successfully move on from Alice like I did over 4 years ago then putting Cindy in the rear view mirror should be just as much a piece of cake as that. I know it's gonna be hard, considering how much time/money I invested in both this business and on impressing her to land me that now-non-existent contract offer but they said I can do that.

  20. 1 minute ago, Stephen said:

I think Big Sexy is shorthand for Cindy?  But it couldn't be short hand because Big Sexy has more letters.

No not quite, it appears like Cindy has dropped the bomb on yours truly here, so much to the point of me wanting to finally wash my hands of her and much like I did with my ex Alice and put her in the rear view mirror.

  21. Will the new Atari brand support even the 5200 despite her niche following after all there are those of us that grew up with her first and then discovered and/or embraced the rest of the Atari family of consoles afterwards.

Just because Big Sexy (our affectionate nickname for the 5200 because if her size and design. the 7800 i referred to as "Lil' Sexy" as she is the same design only smaller) was the proverbial "black sheep" of the Atari family does not mean that she did not have her fair share of loyal followers, I hope that @TrogdarRobusto and those at the new Atari are aware of her 41 year history and will do whatever they can to provide support and/or technical expertise to keep her legacy alive and then some. Perhaps a 5200+ would be nice sometime in the short future, provided it supports both generations of the Atarimax Ultimate SD multicarts. And I hope that guys like our very own Paul Lay @playsoft, and @Ryan Witmer will be allowed to continue to plow out brand new titles for our beloved Big Sexy!!!
