New gold plated 5200 CX-5200 mylar replacements (Not from Best Elect.)
BIGHMW replied to -^CrossBow^-'s topic in Atari 5200
As a (former, and UNSIGNED) musician I can name at least one synthesizer manufacturer that it could get confused with. -
I DO have to admit, that because of Redemption 5200 (both the 2002 OG version from AtariAge/Pixels Past and the newer ones from Nimbleswitch) I have been able to stay in the 5200 loop. If there ever comes a time where I TRULY DID need analog controls I would use my CX52 controllers for such games like Defender, Star Raiders and Star Wars - The Arcade Game. As for paddle games like 5200 Super Breakout, Kaboom and the likes, I have those bases covered too thanks to my ProPaddle 2 5200 paddle controllers (I reviewed them in the video down below) I got out of Germany during the pandemic. And of course what 5200 collection would ever be complete without both the 5200 twin controller holder and also the VCS (2600) adpater, as well as the legendary CX53 Trak-Ball. And don't forget about @Lucas Lac124 and his new 5200 controllers in which are still in the R&D status as I speak and I'll wait as long as it takes for him to get it right so we can all get in on it, as well as RetroGameBoyz's lineup of controllers too.
-
.....amnd as for the issues involving using Atari 7800 controllers (CX24 joystick and CX78 Europad), those you would need the 7800 model of Redemption 5200 (they also have a 2600 model of Redemption 5200 too, both built by Nimbleswitch) to operate those on a 5200. Of course, then you would have that 6-foot line from the Redemption unit to the 5200, and as for the RetroGameBoyz adapter/keypad you simply plug that in to the Redemption 5200's own onboard DB15 connector. I myself years ago used to use the vintage Wico 5200 keypad (before I stupidly sold both of them in 2019) into it instead of the standard 5200 controller and it worked great for me. Of course nowadays with the Wico 5200 keypad nearing unobtainium status I would utilize the RetroGameBoyz keypad in its place.

I DO intend to dig myself out of this mess, and yes, even I have had reserve thoughts about Cindy Margolis' integrity in all of this. I was always lead to believe that if you want to hang with or join the rich & famous you had to act rich. Yes take nothing away from her history-making career considering where the two of us came from in 1983-84 (Erikson Center) but I think that she has been brainwashed by the "elite" in Hollywood into believing that "if you don't have the $$$ then she doesn't have the time for me", so that's why I have been trying to act like her and spend a bit more. I was thinking that maybe Cindy had a heart but apparently she is just like everyone else in the scene, they think that if we don't have $$$ then we are not worth it. As for the rent, I already have July's rent all paid for, meanwhile St. Vincent DePaul is covering $600 of the $700 of June's rent, I still owe $101.00 for my part and yes, I'll definitely have the $$$ to pay next month's rent on time and as far as May's rent I'm continuing to bust ass at work and trying to not have to sell any of my consoles but if I HAD TO then I just might have to do exactly that. Besides, I haven't really put any $$$ into any of my other units (ColecoVision, Atari 7800, or the Atari XEGS) except for my 5200 and since I have gone out of business and have hung it up for good, I am thinking about parting ways with those three units and just keep the 5200 and put the support towards it like I have been doing these past 40 years I have owned one. Also, about my 2002 Beetle GLS, I was talking to a couple of my neighbors here at Bishop Park and they both suggested that maybe I sell her sooner rather then later considering I can get something for her now as opposed to down the road if the timing belt snaps in which I might probably get nothing. Of course the drawback to not having a car in a hermetically-sealed, highly-rural area like Port Townsend/Jefferson County is that you really can't do anything except at home, as there are hardly any of the same resources that urban counties like King County have that can step up and help with repair costs in which I cannot afford any of, period. I'll be fine guys, I AM starting to get back on my meds if i can remember to take them, and WE WILL get though this, but it just might have to take a bit of a lifestyle sacrifice that's all.

They're trying to get to my goat but I'm not buying into it, I myself would like to stick the main subject matter of this thread, it's THE OTHERS who are perpetuating this BS. BTW, on the intended subject matter I was wondering how the progress is going on these new controllers as I'd love to try them out on my 5200.
-
STILL, have those consoles, I'm not giving up yet. But yes there won't be any more videos on YouTube unfortunately, not when nobody will ever see them because of the algorithms literally hiding them from site. ...and we're starting to make progress on the bills too. As for Cindy she pretty much is a lost cause.

The 5200, IS, truly a GAMING machine. The XEGS only tries to replicate that same sentiment. Hey it may 4 times the RAM but clearly it was a last-ditch effort to salvage sales of the 8-bit computer lineup (400/800/XL/XE) in which were slumping by the mid-1980s thanks to the IBM PC coming of age. The 5200 was also unfortunately side-saddled with the BS notion that it was merely a reworked Atari 400 without the keyboard when in actuality when you play its OG lineup against that of the 5200 that Big Sexy's games clearly stood head and shoulders above a 400 computer's versions of those very same games. That's why I chose a 5200 in 1983 over a 400 as I wanted an gaming machine, not a computer.

Why wont the 2600 adapter work with the 4 port 5200?
BIGHMW replied to rietveld's topic in Atari 5200
@rietveld Welcome to the 5200 club from one member who has been with one for 40 YEARS!!! BTW, you have a very nice setup with all sorts of consoles in her, and even an old-skool CRT to boot!!! If you ever need to upgrade to a modern HDTV I have a video on a device that'll make all of your units work with her. My 5200 ownership history: OG (gloss finish) Warner-era (Atari, Inc.) 5200, serial no. 141101, 4-port - 1983-2016 a/v-modded Warner-era (Atari, Inc.) 5200, 4-port - 2016-2017 (sold her on AA) Tramiel-era (Atari Corp.) 5200, serial no. 2056414, with a 4-port BIOS, 2-port - 2017-present -
Super Breakout also supports the Trak-ball

Do 5200 controllers have a super high failure rate or am I just unlucky?
BIGHMW replied to RockLobster's topic in Atari 5200
I ALSO, have an XEGS to go along with my 5200 but never ever count out the 5200 when it comes to controller options, Nimbleswitch has TWO great solutions for you, 2600- and 7800 controller-compatible REDEMPTION 5200 units, I originally had the OG 2003 AtariAge/Pixels Past versions of both before I (stupidly but needed the $$$ at the time) sold them, and now have both of the Nimbleswitch remakes. Also RetroGameBoyz has customized options for you as well, with their lineup of top-quality controllers, handmade-to-order at that too!!! They also, have a Masterplay in which allows 2600 controllers to be used on the 5200. -
No matter how long it takes I'm also looking forward to ordering/reserving 2 of them come pre-order time. ....anyhow in case you don't already know by now that I have gone out of business due to low viewership/subscriber numbers and YouTube's RIGGED algorithms in which suppress smaller channels like the 3 of mine and also eschew towards more corporate content instead of us small independent free-thinkers who put out ORIGINAL content. But I'll still be playing (and enjoying) my lineup of Atari systems and that won't change one bit although I mainly play 2600 and 5200 games now as opposed to the other 2 Atari units due to not having multicarts or the money for them (Concerto for the 7800 and AVG Cart for the XEGS). But getting back to the subject matter yes I DO await the controllers, no matter how long it takes I know that that time is being spent on getting them right. I'm just jealous over the fact that there are SO many titles on the XEGS we will never see, we ARE fortunate to see the ones we have gotten so far, and we could sure as hell use more, but I can't count on any programmers to put out more considering the constant backlash and put downs of the 5200 by the mainstream gaming community at large, that's tantamount to the same kind of treatment that the trans community gets by the mainstream society at large and it's not fair at all. Once one understands how the 5200 operates and acquires a growing appreciation of it, it amounts to better things for both the unit and the community of gamers who swore by it from the get-go (me, 1983). WE ARE GAMERS TOO!!! ....and, with the Masterplay, and also Redemption 5200 being made again by Nimbleswitch, THERE ARE MORE DIGITAL OPTIONS now as far as controllers are concerned. I ONLY GOT the XEGS (and a 65XE before that) in late 2020 during the pandemic because of the games we knew - a) we could never count on ever being ported over that COULD work within the perimeters of the 16K of RAM the 5200 has (i.e.: Crack-Up!, Bug Attack, Seawolf II and Planetary Defense among them, in fact there are too many <16K-capable titles to describe here) or - b) games that are just too powerful (>16K- i.e.: Food Fight, WarGames, Arkanoid, Albert, Dr. Mario, etc.) for Big Sexy to run due to needing more than the 16K of RAM she has. Playablilty goes to the 5200 without question, how many lives have YOU lost trying to find Hyperspace in Defender on the keyboard while having to also put the joystick down to find the right button, or how many times have you failed a mission in Star Raiders because you couldn't throw up your defense shields fast enough or go into emergency hyperwarp when you ABSOLUTELY NEED TO??? Despite her poor OEM carbon flex circuitry (an easy fix with one phone call to Best Electronics with their Rev. 10 gold flex circuits and button replacement systems), you'll never have any doubt that you'll be able to do all of that and more with the keypad mapped out one the CX52 joystick/keypad combo with DUAL fire buttons for certain games like Defender for smart bombs (top fire buttons) and the likes. Boy how we all wish that Curt Vendel was still here as he had plans for a 64K RAM upgrade that would've elevated us to the XEGS' level of RAM, instead we're left "holding the bag".
-
I already have an XEGS but because I unsuccessfully tried to get someone to convert 5200 Tempest to the A8/XL/XE/XEGS I am unfortunately stuck with a 5200 too. If you're wondering about why I prefer 5200 Tempest over Tempest Xtreem from V61 that IS available for the XEGS is because I wanted to support Keithen Hayenga's wonderful work he did to finish off that once-unfinished prototype, I have it and believe me it is damn good, it's a damn shame that AA won't release it for XL/XE/XEGS owners too. Also 5200 versions of A8 titles play better as all the controls are right onboard the CX52, you never have to put down the stick to scrounge around for the right key on the XEGS keyboard on games like Star Raiders and Defender, also 5200 Super Breakout just looks and sounds better than the ugly-ass-looking 1979 A8 version with that uglier green play-field and lame sound and graphic FX. Yes and while there are tons of great titles on an XEGS that we 5200 owners will never see ported there are those titles in which the 5200 and it's controls excel over those of the XEGS. That's why I have both, because no matter how much I try and lobby for it, we'll never see all the 5200 titles on an XEGS nor vice versa.

BIGHMW replied to RockLobster's topic in Atari 5200
Sounds like we have a newcomer the the 5200 world (WELCOME! ), it may be time to put him through Best Electronics ordering procedure 101 for those never-fail Rev. 10 gold flex circuits and button replacement kit they sell so DON'T THROW THOSE CONTROLLERS AWAY!!! There IS hope!!! -
I know that this is an arcade experience with the 5200 debate but aren't we forgetting that Gorf, Kaboom! AND the iconic classic Missile Command were also programmed with the full analog capabilities of the CX52 in mind? ...and another thing, this is what separates the 5200 from pretty much every other gaming console, period. And even though Atari, at that time, had no idea that even though the 5200 did not sell as well as anticipated, there are those of us who (still!) swear by it to this very day, so much to the point in which a once-limited library of 69 officially released titles from 1982-1987 has swollen to hundreds because of the wonderful work of our homebrew community and also the guys who actually took the time to convert many of the A8/XL/XE games to the 5200, and of course, to those who unearthed the unreleased prototypes, many of them completed, and in the case of Keithen Hayenga, who took the time, even 30 years after first starting on it, to complete the iconic Tempest, THE ONE GAME that separates the 5200 from the XEGS and makes Big Sexy my favorite of it had to come down to one or the other, despite both her size and her having only 16K RAM. Arcade experience you want, you will get that and more with the 5200. And if you want digital controls for games like Qix and Pac-Man, do me a favor, stop shit-talking about the CX52 controllers and how the 5200 "sucks" and all that and simply order either a Masterplay from Retro Game Boyz, or, better yet, and yes this is some shameless promotion for the guy who makes them, the Redemption 5200 interface, there are two different models, one that works with 2600 and Sega controllers, and one that works with 7800 controllers. For paddles I happen to own TWO ProPaddle 2 paddle controllers from 0711spiele.de (Ralf Puckner over in Germany) for those 3 games I mentioned at the top

I'm staying out of this one.

Nice! Now, that makes me wonder if maybe, just maybe it'll work with the CX53 trak-ball too, where rolling the ball up would make the ship go down and vice versa, much like the trak-ball version ROM of Tempest I have where rolling the ball to the right makes the ship go clockwise and moving it left makes it go counterclockwise, I'll make a report on it, and, yes, this too, is why the 5200 is a superior gaming machine over the more-powerful XEGS, you don't get THIS kind of controllability with an 8-bit computer. We have true paddle controllers for the 5200 if you did pick up (0711spiele.de) Ralf Puckner's ProPaddle2 5200 paddle controller, in which I reviewed on my Ray Jackson YouTube channel, it also, has twin fire buttons, and there's also the Retro-Game-Boyz 5200 controller in which has twin pots which can also act as paddle controllers on her. We also have both 2600/Sega and 7800 digital sticks available if you get the Masterplay or the 2600/Sega or 7800 versions of Redemption 5200 now being made again as well, and of course, the legendary CX53 trak-ball, and, hopefully soon, someone will make an adapter to let us bring the yoke controller Star Wars CRAVES for the 5200, to work alongside the 5200's S/P/R and keypad buttons too!!!

One of my neighbors, Mark Fulford, in whom I help out and do errands for, is already on it, he has been talking to a local guy he knows about getting a little gig on the side in which I might be able to make about a couple of hundred bucks a week under the rug, so to speak. Now it's all "hush-hush" but if I keep to my routine I mentioned in my previous post I think we can get this thing done and we can FINALLY get to some real serious business. Now this gig is only during the summer and possibly the fall, but there's some serious $$$ to be made out of this!!!

I was ALSO HOPING that maybe Cindy Margolis would've been more cooperative and helped an old friend get his foot in the door in this business so that I COULD get a fair shot at becoming as big as Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber. By my having gone to high school with her (1983-84, Erikson Center, Tarzana, CA, both of us graduated), you would think that maybe she could've lent out a helping hand. I though that maybe she would pay attention through my constant tagging of her on Facebook as she is on my friends list BTW as she remembers me from our days in high school too. in 2003, months after having her first son, Nicholas, Cindy made a comeback on FOX on the 2003 Summer Music Mania TV show, in which was taped in San Diego (Chula Vista) at the Coors Light Amphitheatre (from a tip through my management Len Enders who lived in San Diego from 2001-2008) and soon after wrote to me after I sent her a bunch of S.M.F. and other related tapes and CDs of other bands as I wanted to get her to co-host/make an appearance at a show I was putting on in order to hopefully boost our attendance numbers. I even went out of my way to offer her a room at mine and my ex's house that my late mother's old trust fund had bought and fully paid for that we lived in virtually rent-free, we had a guest room that Cindy could've stayed in. She said I had a great thing going and gave me other pointers, but, she turned down the offer though. But also, I do more than just AK47, in which, was partly because of Cindy Margolis, as that vehicle, in which was an answer to her challenge in her letter she wrote to me to becoming more upbeat and poppier, while still staying hardcore at the same time (at my insistence as I was not about to become another plastic bubblegum girly pop artist), carried me for about 20 years. Before then, I was going to form yet another punk/hardcore/skinhead band after S.M.F. broke up in 2003, called the Crap Of Society, in which was going to be even more hardcore than the hardcore/thrash S.O.D.-style group that S.M.F. was. I don't know if it's a rural vs. urban thing but it sure is hard as hell for rural area-based acts to get noticed without having to relocate to "the big city" and I cannot afford to do so, as i only get $1,063/month from Social Security and have to work for the rest up to $1,450 gross/month. Now I had always thought that the internet was going to be the Grand Equalizer that someway leveled the playing field for all artists, and that maybe I would have the same chances and opportunities that Taylor Swift or my favorite commentator on YouTube the great Brian Tyler Cohen have. Well I guess not. But not only that, but later on, I tried to develop even more talent and versatility in this business to the point that I had more than one way to hopefully "get my foot in the door" in this business, way beyond just music. In 2007, I launched my first YouTube channel, what is now my Ray Jackson YouTube channel. BIGHMW TV followed in 2013, The Atari Report in 2020, in which was developed originally as a vehicle to stay relevant in this business during the pandemic. You guys here on AtariAge were quite vital with your support of that series and channel in which I hope to bring back The Atari Report this coming fall, after I get myself financially squared away. I already cut the cord on cable TV (I just have the broadband internet), switched from Verizon to Consumer Cellular, and also plan on driving less, and between 8:00 am - 6:00 pm, Monday through Saturday, using transit to get to and from downtown, other times (like Sundays or at night) or for destinations that transit can't take me I do have to drive though, but my MP4, CD, cassette, MiniDisc, DVD and VHS collections, my broadband internet connection and my 4 Atari systems (2600, 5200, 7800 and XEGS) and ColecoVision should keep me plenty busy at home at that too. Just a matter of will power and a full fridge and pantry shelves and staying on my meds after that. You guys and your moral support (and your subscriptions on all 3 of my channels and spreading the word about them to others to boost those numbers and get them going in the algorithms) after that can sure as hell help. Thanks!
-
Guys, thanks for the ideas on extra ways to boost the floundering numbers on my 3 YouTube channels and on those of the SuperReport, but as you see in the lack of numbers of both views and subscribers the Google/YouTube algorithms are biased/rigged against the smaller, more-original content creator=related channels and are rigged toward the "bigger" channels like those of these fake auto-tuned pop artists like Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift who put out fake shit "music" and all of these other celebrities these idiot kids like nowadays, but I have been seriously thinking because of those floundering numbers and because the deck is stacked against us that maybe the time HAS COME for me to step down in this business. That announcement, will be made this week and will air on YouTube this weekend and will be the last ever video put out from this company, in which will cease all operations effective 12:01 am, Saturday July 1st.
-
I will. This will be one more project on top of my making some of my handmade beaded jewelry I like to make of various different types of beads. After I get caught up financially I'll start obtaining the parts needed (CX40 joystick and its wiring, project box and buttons, type TBD) so I can get going on this, it should be interesting to see how she comes out, hey, at least Retro-Game-Boyz hasn't done anything like that yet. So I WILL!!!
-
Yes. ....and BTW, this most recent rash of posts on this thread waters my mouth enough and inspires me to want to buy an old 2600 joystick controller (pretty much an old CX40) so I can use the wiring codes from it to maybe fashion up a custom homemade Asteroids/Galaxian/Space Invaders/Star Island-style controller using some buttons (type of switches used TBD) in a small project box for REAL arcade feel, and yes it WILL work with the 5200 if you use a Masterplay or the 2600/Sega version of Redemption 5200 (7800 version for games like 7800 Astro Blaster or 5200 Defender or 5200 Meteorites and others that use BOTH fire buttons to be made soon using a cord from an old 7800 controller too!).
