  1. I tried the PS VR in the store a while ago, and I thought it was really amazing. The way it compensates your head movements is a technical marvel. Also, I tried looking at the 'ground' (I was standing behind a fence in a racing game), then I moved my head forward and the perspective of the fence changed accordingly. It's the closest thing to a holodeck!

By the way, does it help getting a PS4 Pro for VR, instead of a slim? I still haven't got one but now there are enough games for it that I like.

  2. I started with Shenmue 2 since I could find it easily. I think it was one of the best games out there. I loved everything about that game:

    - gameplay (mix of exploration, QTE's, fighting, boring stuff like working)

    - music (every area has it's own music. night and day have also different music)

    - loads of NPC's who have their own path and dialog.

    - cutscenes have a great cinematic style.

    - attention to detail, there is so much to be seen, and everything has a 'reason' it's there.

And there is some stuff you don't even see the first time you play it, like Fangmei's birthday, the duckrace.

  3. N64 was really cool with its SGI related hardware inside. I had lots of fun floating around with Pilotwings. I'm tempted to get an N64 just to play Pilotwings again. I wasn't really into ps1 until Resident Evil came along, another cool gaming experience.

Funny how Nintendo tried to be cutting-edge bitd (N64, GC maybe), but now take a modest approach when it comes to hardware.

  4. Quite ignorant to say that the birth of the home-computer was 38 year ago, on an event where lots of older (home)computers can be seen.

Or should it be, 'The birth of the reasonably priced, very successful, fully equipped (considering low-res graphics, 5Kb ram, which of 3.5Kb are usable in basic is 'full'), non-membrane keyboard, not being marketed as game console, succeeded by the very successful c64, home-computer!'

  5. What is the machine doing?

Lots of positive responses to the video. They all 'want one', they probably know what it actually is? Are those real accounts?

To show the haters and doubters that they're doing something? You know, like the RetroVGS manufacturing process from a few years ago. ;-)

True, history teaches us these kind of teasers are always scammy. Maybe they asked someone to create a random pcb with just their name ('Polymega') on it, who knows?

  6. update 32

    Hello Everyone,

The challenges of running a Kickstarter can become overwhelming. In our case there has certainly been a lot of that feeling in the last months. While thats not an excuse for silence on our side, we have been working through a number of issues and challenges to find a path forward, and apologize this update has taken time to get out. We really appreciate your support and patience as we work things through.

We've had knock-backs on several fronts. Personal, technical, financial, staffing, and more. Youll recall our USB connector issues, which brought additional costs and delays we were not expecting. That delay led in turn to discussions with our supplier on what the initial production run will be (beyond just Kickstarter volumes) that we have been negotiating, to finally move beyond the DVT phase, which has proved more challenging that we expected. We had a great run through EVT and software development, until getting bogged down with issues in the past few months. We are doing everything we can to agree a new plan with our partners to bring us forward.

We need more time while we figure this out and revise our overall plan. We know this isn't what you want to hear. We know you've taken a chance and invested in Gameband, and in us as a company, and we do not take that support lightly. We will give more details as soon as we can. In the meantime be assured we are here, working every angle 100%, and we will continue to do everything we can to keep moving forward.

Thanks as always for your support.

    The Gameband Team.

  7. none of the other items mentioned really apply, because they all point to problems that didn't need to be solved or addressed.

You could take this to the extreme.

    Pong-653x400.png

If that was true, the only game you would play is something like 'Pong'. Subsequent systems added colors, graphics, a CPU. Each generation of consoles solved problems of the previous generation. Right now, and in the past 40 years we are witnessing the evolution of gaming, from something very primitive (pong), to something very advanced and almost lifelike. Pong was pushing only one pixel per frame, the ps4 pro has a pixel fillrate of 58.3 GP/s. I think that's pretty awesome.

  8. As others have said, the NES dominance seems to be specific to the United States, where Atari dominated (then stumbled), Nintendo took off (then got handily challenged by Sega), and then Sony dominated. The players and situations are mixed and matched in other countries and regions, so everyone's individual experience is different.

    What was your experience?

  9. That's certainly a thought I had in the height of NES/Genesis/SNES days. I guess it's a case of, "if the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." Side-scrolling platformers ran well on that hardware.

That's certainly what drew me to it -- better sprites, smoother scrolling, lots of arcade ports, better resolution (the Konami font in particular was pleasingly familiar), fun games ...

    People say, "but computers!"

    Of course computers!

Nintendo prohibited publishers publish games on other consoles, but not computers!

During the NES days I grew up with MSX. Altough it has crappy sound, 16 colors (MSX 2 had 512), no scrolling, I have fond memories of it. Konami has a solid catalog of games for it, all gems. Compile also with their Aleste and Y's games. Hal Laboratory (Eggerland, Rollerball). Microcabin (XAK). Quirky ZX-Spectrum conversions. Nintendo didn't need to save anything! :D

  10. Yakuza 6

I haven't played it yet, but I think it looks amazing. Look at all the stuff. Crowded streets, neon lights, reflections in the water, countless NPC's. There is just so much going on in this game. I'm really amazed that a PS4 is capable of creating all these graphics, maybe I should buy one :D

I'm also really impressed by the psvr. It's much better than I ever expected it to be. The headtracking is what makes it so good. You can rotate/move in any direction and the image is compensated accordingly. It almost a holodeck!

  11.

I upgraded the 13" to Windows 10 a while back, and am experiencing some of this. I might roll it back to Windows 8 or put Linux on it instead. It's from 2014 so I shouldn't complain too much ... it's almost "classic" now, right?

The 11" is still on Win8 and is fine as a host machine for emulators. I wouldn't want to use this for work or as my only machine, but it's awesome for toy purposes.

My kid now prefers a $100 Chromebook. I think that emulators and things are easier on Windows.

I got a lenovo thinkpad X250 from 2015 for my son (9) when his laptop (a 32gb lenovo netbook) broke. I wanted to replace the keyboard but it's just impossible to do maintenance on these laptops.

For myself I got a Lenovo T440P. I got it for Visual Studio, but it runs NullDC and Dolphin too. It even has a CD-ROM which I'm likely to replace with a Blu-Ray.

  12. I bought the 13" for my kid for $200 from the Microsoft Store ("signature edition," no extra crapware) for $200 years ago when they were new, and liked it enough that I got an 11" on eBay for $70 for myself as a retro thing.

I'll bet you can find a decent used deal -- lots of people give up on them because they're slow and have small storage, but they're still great for old GOG games.

No troubles with windows 10 and updates? My experience is that these kind of laptops will themselves with updates so the 32GB gets filled very quick.
