congrats on joining the "lynx club". If you want to beat some of the longer games you might want to get an AC adapter. modern NiMH batteries last a while if all 6 are fully charged, but I would recommend looking for an AC adapter that matches the original specs. My lynx II (and my original lynx) both broke right where the ac adpater plugs in, so I only can play with batteries, but not a big deal nowadays.
some games i highly recommend
California Games (best game the lynx has to offer IMO)
stun runner
lemmings
desert strike
chips challenge
steel talons
road blasters
ninja gaiden (not like the nes version, its an arcade port)
Rampage
Rampart
Warbirds
xenophobe

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't one of the girls in Full House have a Lynx?
yeah I saw that episode. some punk kid at a "make-out party" or something. BEST scene on that stupid show EVER. lol
-
I didn't buy a Lynx until the newer model 2 came out (ended up with 2 Lynxes). Then I tried out the original Lynx at an Atari club. Was shocked how far apart your hands are when playing the original Lynx. I thought playing the Lynx 2 had the hands too far apart (compared to Gameboy, TurboGrafx, Nintendo DS, etc) but Lynx 1 was really really far.
Also, Lynx 1 was mono, wasn't it? Though Lynx sound was pretty bad, some games had stereo. I see zero reason in preferring the original over the newer one (except for the speaker, the newer Lynx you really need earphones). The newer one also looked very classy. The old one looked like a prototype.
I've owned the Lynx 1 and the Lynx II. I had the Lynx I first ( got it brand new in 1992, but we sent it to Atari for repairs, and they sent me back a Lynx II in like 1994). I liked the Lynx 1 because the speaker was a little louder and the game was enclosed in the door on the side. But the feature on the Lynx II that lets you turn off the screen is really nice. Also, the buttons feel more sturdy, the orange power light is helpful, and the paint and overall build quality is higher quality on the Lynx II. I agree that the Lynx I does look like a prototype compared to the Lynx II (or any other handheld really). Until i got a Gameboy Advanced SP, i have always felt the Lynx (I or II) was the best handheld console u could buy.

could you provide a link to the goat store?
nevermind
duh www.goatstore.com
nice. i never heard of this store. I might just have to order some stuff from them! Thanks guys!

I had two friends in high school who bought Lynxes directly because of me. Nothing like a good Warbirds fight in the hallways

You played your Lynx in the hallway at your HIGHSCHOOL?!? Wow, and I thought I was nerdy in high school!
--Wookie
I'm totally jealous. I didnt get Warbirds til like 3 years ago, wish I would have bought it in HS. I would have convinced one of my friends to get a lynx and that game too. That game is ok against the cpu opponents, but I can imagine it's gotta be one of the best multi-player portable games.
-
Yeah I could not have possibly scored 3000 points ever. I'm getting old and losing my mind.
That's why I surf instead.
--Wookie
I like to play both games back and forth really. My best score on BMX is now up to 885 (up from 777) but I cant beat my high score of 10500 on surfing. I can get 9000+ on a regular basis in surfing, but the 10k mark was really tough to break. BMX is much more complicated than surfing, and I just hate when i get a score of 700+ and know i can do so much better on bmx. Surfing is simple, but its still tough to get really high scores. Halfpipe and Footbag are just ok. but I really can do without them both.
edit: and do you guys play with a Lynx 1 or 2? I have a model 2 and sometimes i think i remember the original lynx fitting my hands better. I had a lynx1, but I replaced it with my lynx2 years and years ago.
-
Thanks for sharing, Ax. I always went to Babbages to browse/buy Lynx games but this was in '92. At the time I didn't even know Sears sold Lynx stuff. Damn. This makes me want to play some Lynx now.
yeah i didnt know sears had it either. i think i got my lynx at babbages too. Toys R US is the only other store that i saw had a lynx or lynx games brand new. seeing that makes me want to get a Lynx Model 1. I have a Model 2, but i remember the Model 1 fit my hands better.

The BMX records on twin galaxies are laughable, I can get over 3000 routinely. I don't really think Twin Galaxies has the best players for any game, except maybe some old school arcade titles.
on the atari lynx version? r u sure? I can get in the 700s on a good run. I think you're thinking of a different game. If U actually CAN get over 900, post a screen shot. I doubt that ONLY the score for BMX is laughable, I've had the game since 1992, so i'm pretty sure that ALL the high scores on TG are good.
Yes, I can score over 3000. The back to front flips and the double front flips are worth a fortune. Not only that, you get a bigger bonus the faster you can cross the finish line. I mean, you should be able to score 900 just for doing regular flips on all the berms and crossing the finish line. I can't just turn the game on and do it though, it takes alot of work because the crazy front flips aren't guaranteed each try.
yeah i know how to score points. I just think you havent played it in a while and have your scale WAY off. I would bet some BIG $$$ that you couldnt produce a score of over 900 in 3 months. and yeah I know the front flip off the big jump is hit or miss. I dont ALWAYS have a great score, but dude, the TG score is just not off by THAT much. but thats the internet for u.....
False logic. Just because you can't do something, does not make that a universal truth. People have scored more than 900 on the lynx high score thread for CG. Twin Galaxies is not GOD.
I just wont believe YOU can actually do it on a Lynx (not handy or other emulator) til i see a screen shot. I've had hard enough time getting over 700 that i find it very hard to believe u can get 3000. Thats all im saying. I know that somebody has got over 900, but most people that have done it are using an emulator of some sort. I dont need a video, but a simple photo of your lynx screen would be proof and I'd say im sorry for doubting u.

Speaking of world records, maybe we should do a series of high score club challenges specifically focused on breaking the existing world record. Pick a game, look it up in the twin galaxies database, post the current world record and the rules for officially breaking it and let's get some AA peeps holding official world records.
--wookie
Yeah I'd really love to try to find a way to beat that record. I've barely surpased 10k once, and sometimes I can get like 8k or 9k, but its tough. To get that record you probably have to get a quad every time and spend almost no time picking up speed. sometimes i just do the "ride the pelican" for fun. we'll have to think of some good Surfing challenges. Like the most unreal360s in one game, or the longest airtime (use a stopwatch and count how long your surfer stays airborne). California games is BY FAR the best portable game for any handheld console. Super Mario for GBA is pretty close, but not quite. I cant beat any of the records on Twin Galaxies, but of them all id say i have got the closest on BMX. One of these days I'll get a good video camera and push to beat some of those scores. I used to keep track and take photos, but i dont know where all that stuff went.

Best deals would be :
Electrocop $1.00
Xenophobe $1.00
Warbirds $4.00 i think
Steel Talons $4.00 i think
thats about it. the store i got them at Usually doesn't have lynx games (who does?), but once in a while i see a lynx game or 2, if they are good I've bought them. and for $1, how can i resist (unless i already have the game)
WORST lynx deal -> Batman Returns NEW back in 1993 or something $30 i think...........hate the game still. could have been so great with Continues, lives, or something. Why didn't they test the game? afraid they couldn't sell it fast enough?
-
I recommend the LynxII if you will be using headphones (stereo sound) and the fact that you can pause the game and turn off the screen (no games have a save feature, some have passwords).
games i recommend
California Games (no lynx is complete without this game, a MUST have)
Ninja Gaiden (like the arcade version, not nes)
Road Blasters
Steel Talons
Chips Challenge
Warbirds
Blue Lightning
Rampage
Rampart
Lemmings (if u can find, very expensive usually)
Desert Strike (also hard to find, and pricey)
-
not bad. thats a good start.
-
I'd love to try out Lemmings on the Lynx. But instead of spending tons of $$$ to get a copy I got a copy for my PSP on Amazon. I think including shipping I only payed $10. Awesome game and has tons of levels! I loved the game on the PC. Is the original available on the PC as freeware? anyone know?
-
Loved the game, until i beat it. Now i rarely play it. But yeah i agree with the person that said to try the Canyon level with your afterburners on. After you figure out the way through, its not too hard, but fun. I like Warbirds and Steel Talons too. The Lynx had some real potential, the flying games prove it.
-
sorry, not looking to sell my lynx. but I might suggest checking "www.shopgoodwill.com" from time to time. They sometimes get a Lynx on there. Its basically the website that many goodwill stores use to sell their "junk". It's a safer way to buy than ebay, but be warned, sometimes they say something has NOT been tested, so it isnt perfect.
-
I need some advices for this game. It's probably the one CG event I do worse at.
BTW, when is the Skateboarding HSC going to be? I'm pretty good at that one, getting +30,000 each time I play.
BMX isnt really that tough, its all about hitting the back flip button at the right time. and realizing when to just press nothing at all. you can stay in the very middle most of the time, but once in a while you need to go up or down just a pixel or 2.
my best is like 900 or something, i forgot.
30k on halfpipe is pretty awesome dude! Radical! Personally my favorite is Surfing. I'm getting close to 10,000. But can't
quite do it.
EDIT: I just in fact broke the 10,000pt mark in Surfing today :-) slow day at work. haha. 10515 to be exact. took a pic and everything. Hope the Lynx HSC does surfing sometime.
-
yeah looks kinda cool, but I also do NOT like the Downgrading a Lynx idea. The LYNX is 100X better than a 2600. I would rather find a way to play gamegear games AND lynx games on a lynx screen.
-
Mortal Kombat I, II, 3?
Final Fight (mighty final fight?)
Root Beer Tapper
R-type
TMNT (the arcade game): It was ported to NES, the lynx could easily do that.
Bionic Comando
Gunsmoke
Commando
1943
Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat (like Super Off road, but indy cars)
NBA Jam
-
if you enjoy the game, then its a good deal obviously. but if you hate the game, then it's a ripoff i'd say. Thats how i see it. collecting games just to collect is pointless to me. You gotta like playing the game to make it worth while. personally I think $10 is probably a good deal.
-
how sensitive is the side to side movement for controlling? Did u think of adding it for up and down too? maybe for something like Warbirds, or Steel Talons?
-
i voted lynx I, because I liked closing the door on games, and I liked how the speaker was louder. My Lynx II has dust under the screen that is really annoying, my Lynx I never had that problem. I liked the feel of the Lynx I, but the Lynx II has a great feel too. Close call, but Lynx I by a hair.
-
yep 3rd party support and # of games in general really hurt the Lynx. If they could have released games like Sonic, Mario, Mortal Combat, NBA Jam, or any of the other extremely popular games, then the Lynx could have survived.
The technical specs of the Gameboy don't even COMPARE to the Lynx (in any category). The Lynx really destroys the Gamegear too. My cousin had a Gamegear and I laughed how bad it was. the only thing that was good about Gamegear was the games (which still were not that great). There were a TON more games on Gamegear than lynx. So if you wanted a color handheld you got the Gamegear. but even without color, the Gameboy games were really fun I must admit. but not fun enough that I was going to abandon my Lynx. I was already hooked on California games.
if they could have made the lynx more efficient on batteries (6AA's just didnt very long as we all know) and signed a couple good 3rd party games, it would have competed a little better. and if more people had even just played California games, then they could have sold a few more units. Lynx was definitely an underachiever. Atari should have just funded it more and never done the jaguar , that thing ruined Atari for good.

Top 5 lynx games
in Atari Lynx
Posted
My favorite 5 would be (in no particular order)
1. California Games (of course)
2. Road Blasters (near perfect arcade translation)
3. Ninja Gaiden (nothing like the NES or NGIII for lynx)
4. Rampage (it's just fun)
5. Rygar or Xenophobe
