looks pretty good. you should buy some defective units and experiment with different colors. red/blue/green/silver, etc. then post what results you get. then if you get a good one, you could sell the shell to somebody on here.

I think it's better than the Jag's Pinball Fantasies. Ya, but compared to it's contemporary portable pinball games like Devil's Crash on the TurboExpress or even Revenge of the Gator on the Game Boy, Pinball Jam is pretty sub-par... I love video pinball, but I have a hard time fighting with that game for too long - it's just too hard to figure out what's going on! On the other hand, I was playing Devil's Crash today - 15 years later and I still need to hit that game every couple weeks... I'm as addicted to it as I am to California Games on the Lynx... Which reminds me, theking21083 didn't mention California Games in his opening post. GO OUT AND BUY IT ASAP! California Games is a Lynx MUST HAVE!! ok so by now you GOTTA have Cali games right??? and hopefully for your sake Roadblasters, rampage, and ninja gaiden.

I also thought the same thing. God what a dork I am. Don't feel so bad, I thought the same thing, too. And I'm not even that much of a techie. yup...me too I thought maybe with a clear plastic case ? LOL

Yeah i would say confidently the Lynx is superior. My cousin had a Gamegear and it was a clunker. It only had 2 buttons (a and b) the sound was not near as good. and the graphics weren't as good. Gamegear only sold more because it had Sega backing it. (and making crappy games for it). I took my lynx to my cousins house , and i thought his gamegear was a joke. He agreed the lynx (roadblasters, california games, batman returns) was better. The only games i ever liked on Gamegear were Sonic and Columns. Both systems would have done better if we had better batteries in the early 90s. 6 AA batteries back then gave you an hour or so, not so great when they were disposable. think of it as the difference between the master system and the nes. The Master system was superior, but sega couldnt get enough great games to convince people to buy it over the NES. or you could even compare the TG16 to the NES or Master System. same deal, but even worse support by game developers.

You found any other games for your LYNX yet? I have 12 Lynx games (i bought most of them in the mid 90s) I am sure i can speak for the rest of everyone and say you MUST get California Games ASAP. Surfing and Bmx are very addicting. Also I personally recommend Ninja Gaiden, Road Blasters, Steel Talons, and Blue Lightning. and I also recommend you download an emulator so you can try games out on your PC before you buy them for the lynx. When you do buy, i would expect to pay around $10 for most games, but rare games like Lemmings are not going to be cheap.

I have the smaller bag. It barely holds the Lynx II , since its made for the skinnier Lynx I. It also holds 12 lynx (curved lip) games. 10 fits a little easier, but if you put them in upside down ,12 barely fit. Also in the side pocket you can put an extra set of batteries (i used to all the time ,before i got these nicer batteries that last a lot longer). its sure easier to carry than a suitcase, but if you have more than over 12 games you play alot, then the bigger case is better.

my high score on rollerskating is 22,340. the technique is to get a lot of speed so you can get some hang time on the 720 jumps on the rollers skates..... what r u talking about? there is no rollerskating on the LYNX version of California Games............. and yes i forgot Footbag earlier, it is 4 events. BMX, Surfing, Skateboarding, and Footbag. Thats it (for the lynx version that is). Yes the other versions had the other events like flying disc and rollerskating.

Basically these are just webcams pointed at the Lynx screen. I tried my webcam to see what it looks like. The result is a screen that changes color from light blueish at the bottom and washed out at the top. But the game is playable. The screen is much better in real life than what you see by looking at it through a webcam. -- Karri yeah, thats what i figured. the headphone jack is an audio-out, but using a camera to capture video from the screen is the worst way to project the game onto a tv. If only the comlynx port could be used as video out.
-
that is a smokin deal! If my lynx broke, i would probably pay up to $50 for the console alone. And games usually cost $5-10 each. I never really buy anything on ebay, due to the risk. but if i saw a lynx and a ton of games at a pawn shop or at another store, id snatch it up for $30 in a heartbeat.

sometimes my lynx II says "insert game" when the game isnt all the way in, but usually it wont turn on unless the game is all the way in. W/o a game, it will not turn on at all. try getting a crappy game really cheap, then put it in and see if it turns on. But be sure you use some powerful batteries, not those crappy cheap batteries, or you will get about 30minutes of playtime.

I agree with some of your picks. But I disagree on a few. first. In 1990, you put the best game that came out was Tods adventures in Slime World.... I would definitely put Roadblasters ahead of that. I would put Desert Strike and Lemmings as a tie for 1993. Both games are awesome, and I am trying to aquire both for my collection. *Oh and btw, what did you use for your source on release dates? Some release dates are confusing. Like Warbirds for example, it says Copyright 1990 when you start it up, but the label says 1991. Same with Steel Talons (1990 vs 1992?)

Lynx collecting - how far can a cheap bastard go?
lynxmatt1980 replied to Zwackery's topic in Atari Lynx
thats a pretty nice collection. I have 5 of those, and I definitely want to get Rampart. Most of the others I have played emulated versions, and thought they were ok. The local used bookstore near me has a few games for $6-8 each. But all they have is Electrocop, Casino, Hydra, Awesome Golf, and California games (maybe another title or 2, but nothing i am looking to get). From what games I have played (emulated or original), I can guarantee that you would like the games below: Ninja Gaiden Road Blasters Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf* Rampage* Double Dragon* Stun Runner* APB* Xenophobe* Lemmings* European Soccer Challenge (if you are into soccer, you might like it) *=games i still want, but haven't got yet -
I dunno, i guess the Lynx I and II helped keep Atari around a little longer i think, and if they had not completely failed with the Jaguar, they could have made a LynxIII or at least an adapter to let you play lynx games on the Jaguar. has anyone heard if Epyx tried to sell the "handy" project to Sega before selling it to Atari? Cuz the Gamegear was a big POS, but they had great support from 3rd party software developers. Lynx was the other way around, as we all know.

hey guys, i saw this topic and thought I'd throw something out there. They make this adapter that i think I saw at my local used game store. It's made for the psp, but the way it hooks up, i think it may actually work on the lynx http://www.pspontv.com/order.shtml but really 79.99 + 15 for shipping is a bit too much for me (even if i could get it to work on the lynx) edit: and there are a few other similar products out there for the psp also. like this one http://www.divineo.cn/cgi-bin/div-cn/psp-tvad.html it runs 39.90+shipping, but again , who knows if it would work on the lynx very well or at all.

Some games only boot with new batteries?
lynxmatt1980 replied to DragonmasterDan's topic in Atari Lynx
I've got a bunch of these as well and they are awesome. The ones I have are Rayovac IC3. The only problem I had with rechargeables and the Lynx is that on my Lynx I the batteries at the bottom of the well are a snug fit and have to be shaken out, and at the top I had to slightly bow the battery contacts outward to make contact with the batteries. Remo- yeah i have that same problem with my LynxII somewhat. I have a couple batteries that seem a little thicker and the + ends aren't as good, so when all 6 are in, they almost get stuck. But when i had a LynxI the batteries would get stuck a lot easier, and I would have to shake it to get them out too. karri - yeah i think ive seen those 15min batteries and chargers. but im hesitant to spend the $. It usually seems to be true that if the charge is too fast, the batteries go dead quicker. -
Some games only boot with new batteries?
lynxmatt1980 replied to DragonmasterDan's topic in Atari Lynx
I only use batteries in my LynxII (the AC adapter plug stopped working) I think if you have a problem with Only NEW batteries working with your Lynx, the reason is you are using weak batteries. Most AA are 1.2 - 1.5 volts. But with portable devices like Digital Cameras and handhelds like the Lynx, you want to use batteries that have a lot of mAh (mili-amp hours?). Usually you'll see a rating on the battery for it's strength. Most disposable batteries are kinda weak. Personally, when I play my lynx for a while I will notice the power light blinking. then i slowly increase the brightness. Eventually i can't see much of anything and then the Lynx turns itself off. Some games dont load if the little red light blinks or flickers a little bit. That usually clues me to throw the batteries on the charger and call it quits. **NOTE**I Highly discourage people from wasting $$$ on "disposable" batteries. I started using rechargeable Ni-MH (nickel-metal hydride) batteries. A 4-pack of 2500 mAh batteries + charger may run you about $20, but you can use them over and over again after you recharge. I usually charge the batteries overnight if i see the power light starting to flicker a little bit. (It can take up to 7hrs to fully charge 4 batteries using the charger i have). FYI , I bought mine at a store near me called Batteries Plus. -
I used to see all the games for Lynx at Babbages (which became electronic boutique, then shortened to EB games). and a few times i saw games at Toys R Us. But a VAST majority of my games have been purchased at Used game stores. Recently I went to my local "Bookmans" (its a used book store that carries games, cds, dvds, magazines, and comic books). I noticed they received a handful of lynx games in. I bought Warbirds and Steel Talons for like $14+tax. I might go there tomorrow and see what else they have. p.s. I had a Lynx I and i thought the screen was way better than the Lynx II i have now. Also the Lynx I had the cool compartment that held the game. and i think i remember right, but the Lynx I had a much louder speaker. but the Lynx II case seems to be a little nicer and easier to hold. thats just my opinion.

It's not just you. I too found the rollerskating and flying disc events unable to be played on the Lynx. what r u guys talkin about? Flying disk and rollerskating? Those are probably on the original California Games for the computer. But on the Lynx it's just the 3 events. There is the girl rollerskating on the highscore screen, but no reference to frisbee or flying discs at all. But anyways..... My favorite is Surfing first. Then BMX is a close 2nd. I should start skateboarding again soon, but it doesnt really give you as much freedom as the other 2, so it gets more repetitive. And footbag......that game is something i rarely try. But one of these days I'll see how my high score matches up with you guys.

hey i have a simple suggestion, but it might sound stupid. Sometimes my lynx doesnt turn on because the battery connection isnt perfect, or a game isnt all the way in the slot (or just has a bad connection with the slot). also, every time i turn my lynx on you can hear the screen come on. even with the volume all the way down, u can here a soft pop or click noise. i would just recommend pushing on the batteries some (I highly recommend 2500mAh Ni-MH Recharchable batteries) and then insert and re-insert game carts. It might help, sometimes the lynxII can be touchy like that. At least mine is. hopefully you can get a lynx to work, if not you can sell the spare parts to people.

Hey everyone, New AtariAge member, but long time Lynx owner. I'm going to just rank my personal collection and give summaries of my impressions 1. California Games - I have had this game since the day i bought my Lynx brand new. I still love to fire it up and try to see how high of a score i can get in surfing. I wish i had known somebody that had this game to link up, but the lynx was never popular where i live. 8.9/10 (id give it a higher score if they had put something better in instead of footbag) If all lynx games were as good as this, it would have beat out the Gameboy and/or Gamegear and survived a few more years. 2. NINJA GAIDEN- This game was one of the few games i ever bought brand new at a store (Toys R Us had a few left). I had played the arcade and I would say this game is a Perfect port. You wont find a closer version to the arcade, especially for a portable. 8.6/10 3. Road Blasters - This is yet another nearly perfect port of the arcade version. The music, voices, sound effects, all right on the money. The graphics are pretty close too. It's a relatively long game, so I rarely play all 50 levels. Usually after a few i get bored with it. 8.5/10 4. Blue lightning - this was another game i got free when i bought my lynx in 1990 or something. Back then, it was definately the best lynx game. the password feature really added to the game, and it took me a while to beat back then. The intro scene and music were awesome, and this game showed the graphic capabilities of the lynx. unfortunately they never made a sequel on the lynx. (the jaguar version was disgusting) It had a slight afterburner type feel, but you could land, attack ground targets, or just fly over nearly everything (the coward way out). this game is a tie with road blasters at an 8.5 out of 10. 5. Steel Talons - this game i actually just found at a used book/magazine/game/dvd store. Only cost me $8. Definitely a STEAL! I probably would have paid 2x the amount, since this game is very close to the arcade version. The game is pretty difficult at times, but i think the graphics and controls are a B. overall an 8.0/10 6. Warbirds - i also found this game the same day i bought steel talons. total steal at like 6 bucks + tax. This game has awesome controls, but the game is just so limited. If they had added a campaign mode, or more missions, I would give it a better score. I can imagine this was the best multi-player game over 15 yrs ago. but again, kids i knew had a gameboy or a gamegear..... 7.5/10 7.European soccer Challenge - I bet some people like this game more than i do, but I'm not a big soccer fan, so I can't really get into it. The graphics are decent and the controls are ok, but the game is just frustrating at times. basicaly you have to run at the player with the ball and steal it, then hope you can kick the ball over the goalie into the net. but usually he will catch your shot and kick it away. I swear i've had so many games that i lost 1-0. Not a game i pick up and play very often. a 7.0/10 8. Viking Child - This game looks weird at first, and is no match for Super Mario or Sonic, but it was another game that showcased the capabilities of the lynx. This game has some HUGE boss fights and massive levels. However the difficulty can be somewhat steep i think, and the sound effects can get annoying. overall, it is a decent game, but nothing to brag about. 6.5/10 9. Pit Fighter - true this game has nearly impossible controls and difficulty, but I still like to play it sometimes. I dont think ive ever beat it, but I think i got to the final boss a few times. Usually its not worth the hassle. The graphics are ok, but if you ever played the arcades, you'd wish you had a bigger screen. the sound is ok i guess. overall this is just ruined by the bad controls and unfair difficulty at times. There are so few lynx games, so sometimes you take what you can get. 6.0/10 10. Cyberball - basically this is not a game worth playing against a computer opponent. You can never lose after you figure out how play. I usually put up over 50pts and only allow 14 or something. If they had allowed the running plays to work more than 1% of the time, then it would have been enjoyable. The only good part of the game is the voice at the beginning sounds good "Play Cyberball" haha . I guess if you played this with a friend, you might have a fun hour or so.....but i doubt it. 5.5/10 11. Kung Food - ok so maybe this game is a little better than pit fighter, but the plot is just lame. you're killing potatoes, carrots, ice, and tomatoes. at times i had fun playing this game, but i dont think i ever beat the 3rd level. the music was pretty cheezy. but i guess the only plus to the game is the controlls. For having 2 buttons it manages ok. the punching and kicking work ok. Basically this is one weird game. Worth playing a few times, but not a great experience. 5/10 12. Batman Returns - They actually had commercials for this game and in those days i didnt read reviews before buying games (i was 12). So the first time you play it, you think it might be cool, But then you realize that there is no continues and its too easy to die. What? So you die and its game over? wtf. I think i've been to the 2nd level a handful of times, but never past that. The computer is cheap, and the lack of continues or passwords, just plain kills this game. sad sad 4/10
