Date would be one but more telling would be the position of the President's faces and size (assuming US currency).

U.S. Bills look "fake" now, just think what the public back then would think of them...

I don't know if I would- I'd just need some appropriate play money & a sports bar nearby when I land. Bet some drunk $100 on the winning team, use his money to place more bets (different places, different days preferably). Or go through my coin collection and gather enough change for a low-stakes lottery win... something they can pay out at the gas station, y'know?

I think finding period appropriate ID would be the harder part.
