  1. All these years later and I had forgotten about this post, at that time I was trawling a number of boards (including some I don't frequent regularly) to find like-minded people and this one got away from me. Sorry guys. The group did happen and is called the STL Classic Computing and Retrogaming Club, you can find it here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/429635153738633/ We ended up going with a Facebook group, since it was free and most people already have an account. We've had many meetups and even a few events at the Basement Arcade (the owner is part of the group). The meetups have dropped off as I've got 2 kids now and I've always had a serious interest in music and synthesizers as well (which ties in well to the retro scene) - I'm still interested and present, just no energy to plan stuff for the time being. Hope anyone who would have been interested, either already found us or will now
  2. St. Louis, MO - at the bottom of my post I also mentioned local pickup is OK for those near enough.
  3. New old stock 5 1/4" diskettes, double sided double density, in manufacturer's shrinkwrap (3M sealed with band) - I use them on a C64, Vic20 and Atari 800XL flawlessly. Please PM if interested. Estimated manufacture 1998-99 per the box, these were pulled brand new from a warehouse that closed. In addition these are designed to resist damage from temperature extremes, per the box logo. About as good as it gets if you're a retro computing or gaming enthusiast looking to replace old, warped floppies. I have several hundred to sell in total, $10 per box of ten plus shipping, if you'd like to buy multiple boxes (3+) or a large bulk quantity (10+) I'd be open to negotiation, have about 500 (50 boxes) on hand. I'd appreciate buying at least 2 boxes to make it worth my while to ship, but I won't make that a requirement Pictures available if anyone needs them, but it's typical Imation 3M stock. Also open to local pickup in the St. Louis, Missouri area. Thanks, Owen
  4. Over 2 years later and here I am looking over this thread, because I ran into the same situation with speech not working and couldn't remember what I did. The commands were all correct, the trick is to make sure they are typed in ALL CAPS, which other posters alluded to but nobody outright said was the solution, so I wanted to make that clear to anyone skimming through quickly. I didn't realize it right away even after re-reading most of the thread :-) The commands to get speech going can be found on page 34 of the Terminal Emulator II manual, located here: http://www.digitpress.com/library/manuals/ti994a/terminal%20emulator%20ii.pdf
  5. Yes, TE2 cart in TI BASIC - "I/O error 00". If I unplug the speech module I get the same error.
  6. The only other carts I have are TI Invaders and Munchman. Don't have cassette or disk drives either. Bummer...
  7. Actually tried running the Speech Synthesizer today, and I'm getting an error. According to the manual, I should be typing in the following: OPEN #1:"SPEECH",OUTPUT And going from there. But when I run this line I get an "I/O ERROR". Does this mean my speech module is dead? I've reseated it (and the TE2 cart) several times.
  8. Another noob question... are there any decent music/sound editors/tools out there for this machine? Like a tracker perhaps? I'm looking for something that's a little better than TI's music maker cart, but doesn't require programming it by hand. Thanks!
  9. Thanks, if you're offering to send me one, I may still be in the market. The eBayer I was trying to get mine from is being awfully slow about answering my question about local pickup - and technically I haven't bought the cart yet - if they aren't willing to do that, I'd take you up on this.
  10. So I can generate individual phonemes with TE2 it appears - can I control other things like speech speed? Any other vocal characteristics I can change? Thanks for all the info so far. Just ordered a speech synthesizer module and TE2 from eBay... this will be my first legit use of the TI-99/4A that I acquired somewhat accidentally from a friend who was moving.
  11. Lee - thanks, I was hoping that was the case! dendawg - What's XB? Also, is there any advantage to having the Speech Editor cart? I am a musician experimenting with old-school voice synthesizers and ran into some pretty serious limitations with the Commodore Magic Voice, so I was hoping for a little more power/ease of use on the TI. -Owen
  12. Hello, Is the TI Speech Synthesizer module limited to its internal vocabulary only, or can it do full-on text to speech via the Terminal Emulator II cart? Thanks, Owen
  13. I'm willing to wait for more to be built, a long time if necessary (like 4-8 months). Santosp said he'd get back to me about it sometime this week, we'll see if there's any possibility.
  14. But wait... you guys haven't seen this? http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/205995-sio2sdpc-combo-for-atari-8-bit/ Unless I'm misunderstanding something, it's supposed to do both (standalone SD storage AND SIO2PC/USB interface). I've asked Santosp (the creator) about it, he's out of them but will be getting back to me... it looks perfect.
  15. Thanks. There are a lot of options to sort through. The SIO2PC/USB looks pretty awesome... anything that combines PC hardware emulation AND standalone SD storage should be optimal.
  16. And about modern file transfer and storage, would you guys recommend any SD based options? SIO2PC w/ APE seems the most versatile, but requires a PC. With chiptune exhibitions in mind I would benefit from a more self-contained solution.
  17. I've got it working now, both methods. Victory! Thanks! As it turns out, the file HAD copied after all. I have learned a little more about SpartaDOS, plus the very helpful advice here. It's a little like MS-DOS which is good for me. I don't understand why I wasn't able to make my own MypicoDOS bootable disks, but the ones graciously provided above work fine. I can dump games on them in makeATR and copy to real floppy, works. That's going to be faster than manually copying files via SpartaDOS, although the knowledge gained there is good to have. My primary purpose here is to create music and maybe GFX, more so than play games, so file handling is necessary. Do all Atari 8-bits have BASIC built in? Curious since there is a cartridge for it as well. Also, how long do I need to hold down option to disable it? When necessary, do I need to do this only once as the computer boots? Also, when creating images via makeATR, I can specify different formats for a disk... for different DOSes. Maybe I chose the wrong type when creating my bootable image. FYI, I have hundreds of new stock DS/DD floppies that work great with all my 8-bits... no problems there! Thanks again for the ongoing help. Wouldn't have made it this far without it!
  18. Now I've found a manual for SpartaDOS here:.http://sdx.atari8.info/sdx_files/4.41/Manual%20V4-41.pd Booting from SpartaDOS on APE drive 1, I attempted to copy a single game from APE drive 3 over to real floppy in drive 2, which has been formatted by SpartaDOS and made bootable. It appeared to copy the file, but then when I tried to boot from the new disk I got the SpartaDOS screen and when doing a DIR D2 it shows no files. I think I need to just buy a double density upgrade for my 1050 so I can just dump the .ATRs over in bulk, or maybe some kind of SD card data storage unit... this is too painful... if I went with SD data storage, any suggestions on what's easiest to use?
  19. I also tried booting from SpartaDOS via APE, then formatting a real floppy with it and making it bootable via the command above "BOOT D2:X32G.DOS". I was able to create the disk successfully, but now I have no idea how to get the games over to it... The manual for the 800XL and 1050 are both totally useless. I don't even know which DOS I should be using for what, there are half a dozen flavors or more...
  20. Ok, so I copied MypicoDOS over to a real floppy. The 800XL boots with this disk, then pops up a menu. When I insert a blank formatted disk (tried single density, enhanced density, multiple good disks) and select "init disk" followed by the corresponding drive #, it fails and says "error creating PICODOS.SYS." Then I tried creating a new .ATR image via the makeATR editor, hoping I could just put the DOS files on there along with some games. The disk does not boot - "BOOT ERROR". When creating this image, I've tried including the DOS.SYS and DUP.SYS, as well as putting ALL the files from the MypicoDOS image, still does not boot. Even when trying to create an .ATR that has NOTHING BUT the files from the MypicoDOS image, the disk doesn't boot.
  21. Thanks so much for taking the time to explain some of this. It's all new to me so this is very helpful. How can I just load something from the DOS prompt? MyDOS 4.53 doesn't appear to have an option to load a program from the DOS menu. I have a disk with a game called FOOTBALL, that appears as such upon listing the directory. Somebody else suggested it'd be like this: LOAD"D:FOOTBALL" This did not work... the drive spins up for a second, then I get "ERROR - 21".
  22. Ok, so I'm having success creating single density (or "enhanced" since I'm using a 1050) .ATR images, moving files over from existing double density images into them, and copying these ATRs over to real floppy. Thanks for the link to the ATR editor info! Now there are new problems... 1 - the disk images have several games on them, listed first when I view them in an ATR editor like makeATR. Then below that, there's a ton of garbled text. I don't know if these are necessary files or what. 2 - I copy just these files over to real floppy via SIO2PC/Prosystem using my newly created single density ATR file... and it works, but then when I boot up the Atari nothing loads. "BOOT ERROR". 3 - I tried again but included a DOS file (.DOS file from a SpartaDOS disk) thinking that perhaps it couldn't boot because it needs this, but that time I got "Error: No DOS". For example's sake, I've tried this entire process with a games disk here: http://www.mushca.com/f/atari/index.php?dl=001 I don't know anything about Atari DOS or what the computer needs to load files. Does it need to load some type of operating system from a disk like an early IBM PC to have any capability at all? Or does it have some built-in DOS capabilities like a C64?
  23. Thanks guys! I will try both methods. Are there any Atari DOS quick command references, and .atr disk image editors, that you'd recommend?
  24. Greetings, I have been trying to copy some disk images in ATR format via the APE and Prosystem PC applications, via SIO2PC (USB) and Atari 1050 drive. I know the drive and interface work because I've successfully loaded programs from both into my 800XL. The problem is, when I try to transfer the disk image to real floppy, the copy fails - I believe this is because all of the ATR images I'm finding online are double density (180kb), and my stock 1050 disk drive is only designed to read/write single density. Does this sound correct? And if so, is there any convenient way around this, aside from upgrading my 1050 to read/write double density? I'd be content to just load files from the emulated drives available via APE and the SIO2PC interface, but the interface is on loan from a friend so I'd like to get some disks made before returning it. Thanks in advance for any advice!
