PSP....is it worth getting for my useage?
kondre replied to kondre's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
cut it out. I already told Danno that he shouldnt have made that post. this is NOT what this is for. I want to know how to downgrade my version on the psp from 2.80 to 1.5 and then back up using one of the versions on the dark alex site. the two of you need to stop yelling at each other and talk to me. leave eachother alone. it's so counter productive its not even funny. PSP....is it worth getting for my useage?
kondre replied to kondre's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
Ok, so its here, and the system info says the system software is version 2.80 Now, I find this odd as I never saw a version 2.80 in any of my looking around. And looking at that Dark Alex site i see no mention of version 2.80....so which downgrader should I use, or do i really need too? Kevin -

true, but your comment actually takes it to a different direction. kinda attacks him and its not really needed. he made his point and you have made yours. honestly, I have found great info from both of you and after the psp arrives and i have some time with it, i hope to ask for more help I like the atariage forums the best for all the vid gaming i do. PSP....is it worth getting for my useage?

ok guys, I dont want to see a PSP vs GP2x battle here, thats not why I started this thread I didnt know about the GP2x and when it was mentioned very early in this thread before i got the psp, I missed its mention. honestly, if i had, i probably would have gone after it as I am really looking for a small pocket computer here running something other than windoz. I am hoping to take the psp and use its web browser to surf web sites that I will create and maintain on my mac that will contain my contacts, and the other most used items that a PDA does, I am looking to replace my Apple Newton, I dont really use the newton to its fullest and i think i can build a nice web page based replacement of what i use it for. that and the advantage that it will be a mobil audio/video device that plays some nice games will be a bonus. the emulation is a nice bonus too but it wont be the primary goal of the machine so if the psp does it, great, but I am not expecting to use the psp to play 2600 and 7800 games 100% of the time. I will keep my eye out for a GP2x at a great price. looking at it more, it has more possibilities than the psp for me since its really a mini linux computer. All this said, I think both units are great products, its all a matter of what is it going to be used for? the right tool for the job is what it all comes down to. and for my wants, the GP2x looks like it could hedge better, but i already paid for the psp, so I will attempt to have it do the things i want with the knolledge i have. if i fail, then i will replace it with a GP2x, well see. I came to this with the need to find out what the psp could do other than just play games, and I have found that there are several things it can do. sure its not a great pda replacement, but i dont need all the things a pda does either. i dont keep agenda's on mine, I dont use it for to-do lists, I only use it to keep phone names, numbers, addresses, dates for those names, and some other small lists. thats it really. and I can make web pages with that data as well easily, I can then store those web pages on a mem stick and always have them with me just as easily as when they were on the newton. will i want to carry the psp with me all the time? probably not, but remember then Newton isnt small either 8"x4.5"x1" doesnt fit in a pant pocket well, so i didnt cary that around with me all the time either. why didnt i use my phone to contain the contact info? the screen, 1.5" diag just doesnt cut it for me. i am used to the newt's 6" diag. screen, yeah, 6" diag. the screen on the newt is larger than most of the current pda machines out there now. it was intended that way for writing because it does do extremely well recognizing my handwriting. but i found i dont use it much taking notes, so there you go. oh, long post, sorry. ok, so, lets say I get my psp, and I can get it down graded to firmware 1.5 what is the best custom firmware that can be installed that will allow me to do emulation, surf the web, run the current games? and where can i get it? how does one install the firmware? I use mac OS X if that has any impact. thanks -

ok, so the psp emulation will streach the screen to wide for emulation, that will distort the images. i suppose i could live with that, seeing its an all in 1 unit. with the web browser, can i look at web pages that i make and store on a mem stick? I imagine it can, i just want to know for sure. how does the firmware versions effect the performance of the unit with store bought games? -

Danno- what if its over 3.03? I have read that 1.5 is good for homebrew and emulators. Where can the custom firmwares be found? are they more difficult to install? forgive me for the newbi question, but why so many firmware differences? does playing the umd games get effected at all with the different versions? or any of the other functionality of the unit? I am excited to see atari emulators for it too. 2600, 5200, 7800 systems...nice. if i go after the 7800 emulator, will it play the roms from 2600 games? if so there is no sense in having more than the 1 emulator. I just ordered a 4gb mem card for it. not sure how much room the atari emulators need, but that i hope will be enough for the emulator, some mp3's and maybe 1 ripped movie. Kevin -

Well, I found a used psp for $100 so i grabbed it. not sure if it will do all the things i hope to do, but it seems to have the potential to do many things. it might be bulky, but if i can get it to do 90% of the stuff i am hoping to do, then all i will need to do is carry that around with my phone. which isnt too bad. its better than carrying around my phone, my newton, an ipod, and another unit for mobil gaming. Honestly? I am not kidding here, I found one and I am wondering how much its worth. Kevin Pictures. Forget it, I talked to the guy some more....he got it off ebay a bit back and found out that it was an aftermarket cart, he didnt really want to tell me that though. sometimes too much of a good thing really isnt I find out. PSP....is it worth getting for my useage?
kondre replied to kondre's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
Ok, soI have spent half the day going over this whole deal in my head. I have figured something out...something simple. I want a PSP, and I think I am wanting it to behave like a PDA so i have an excuse for getting one, so its not just a waste of $$ on a gaming system that I really dont need. i suppose that the primary goal of the unit would be to play mp3's and movies i put on it while I am riding the bicycle downstairs in the basement on the trainer. the games would be played other times, i need the hands on the bars while i am riding. So, how good is the PSP with playing MP3's and how easy is it to get movies on to memory cards readable by the PSP from OS 10.4? Kevin -

JR- So, what machine are you using? I have just spent a good portion of my day digging into that Zodiac, and the more i read, look, I think i will have to pass... One thing I just thought of was to take my contact list from the computer and export it to a HTML file....once there, I could store it on a sd card and then have that in the PSP. using the PSP's browser, I could in theroy view the list there if i ever needed it on the go. am I correct in this theroy? .....honestly, rairly am I adding a new contact to the list on the newton. and i find myself not using the calender in the newton for anything other than having birthdays be displayed when they are coming up. Huh, come to think of it, I actually dont use the newton to its potential at all....i did for a while, but its use has dwindled. Kevin -

JR- remember, I am going to be upgrading to this pda/gaming machine from an Apple Newton......a newton.....not that i dont like my newton...but I finally figured I should at least get in the current century with the pda. Kevin -

OK, what? the battery is hard wired? so its an internal rechargable battery that can not be taken out of the unit. thats what you are saying? so when the battery no longer takes a charge, I am SOL. this is what you are telling me? thanks Kevin -

PSP....is it worth getting for my useage?
kondre replied to kondre's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
well, I suppose I could pick wait, and just when the right PSP comes along, snag it. and get the iPAQ as well, so i have both worlds. I wanted to get an iPAQ 4700 for the wife, to replace her apple newton, and get myself a PSP and make the PSP work for me as a light light PDA with good games....looks like i will have to bite the bullet and get 2 iPAQ's and a PSP, then see if anyone out there is interested in 2 newtons. Kevin -
I have been thinking of getting a PSP for quite a while now, but I just never complete the process of purchasing it. I am interested in using it for the following: Listing in priority level 1. portable video player of Backed up DVD movies I own on memory cards 2. MP3 player 3. web browsing 4. PDA functions such as holding contact information, phone numbers, etc. 5. games 6. Atari 2600/5200/7800 emulator Now I also want to know how good the unit is from a productivity point of view... Can the PSP act like a PDA in any maner? keeping contact information including phone numbers, and dates? Is there any productive value to it at all? or is it just a gaming/video machine? I am tossing between a PSP and a used HP iPAQ Pocket PC Hx4700 the iPAQ isnt much of a gaming machine at all, but if you look at the list above, gaming isnt actually the highest priority for the units demand. as far as gaming goes, i have read threads about the PSP having a blury screen...how bad is it? depends on the type of game i suppose, probably worse on driving games, which are my gaming favorites, i really enjoy car racing games. thanks Kevin
