When playing Battlemorph the game basically works fine, as long as I dont fly super fast and crash stuff it never freezes. However, at the end of the Paramer mission you have to sit thru an explosion where the game is trying to show off its explody sprites and loud noises, but the GD doesnt seem to like this and always freezes at the part for me. Wondering if anyone has managed to get by it and if so what SD card you use.

Has anyone here owned a LAPCAT or LAPCAT Pro controller?
captainblack replied to captainblack's topic in Atari Jaguar
The Japanese style buttons lead me to assume this was made sometime after the 90s as only American style were available then, so probably this was made by an independent creator who was a jag fan or because it was commissioned by a jag fan. -

I picked up the sandisk ultra a1 16gb, as recommended in the CD thread, and it basically fixed the issue. The sound no longer cuts out at the start of the game, but it does sometimes cut out if I save as the predator or load a save as the predator. Its much more practical to work around this than the previous situation though and the issue is essentially resolved. It also mostly helped with CD loading. I get more black screens with this card but once the game is up and running it has no issues, with the exceptions of Blue Lightning which will eventually crash but not as often, and BlackIce/WhiteNoise, which for some reason doesnt work at all on this card.

Indeed I did. Its the Sandisk 32gb Edge for reference. Im going to pick up a different one today and test it out.

Update on this: the more I played the more the degeneration continued. Eventually there was no sound when selecting the alien either, and the next day there was no sound when selecting the marine and it would even crash sometimes. I reformatted the memory card and that got things back to normal but only for a very brief time. The first time I tried after that sound worked for the predator but cut out after 10 seconds or so, I tried again and from then on it was back to sound not working for the predator. The pattern of degeneration is one I also see when trying to get the CD games to work. Typically if I reformat the card, Blue Lightning will work perfectly long enough for me to complete 1 level, on the next level near the end there will be either an audio glitch or the frame rate slows down significantly, then Ill try and start a third level and it crashes. The next time I try I usually get the issues on the first level and it crashes when I try to play the second. Next time it will crash trying to load the first, that will happen a few times before eventually the sound cuts out as soon as I get to the level select map, and it crashes upon selecting any of the levels. Eventually it gets to the point where it usually doesnt make it past the title screen and if it does sound cuts out as soon as you get to the first menu. I tried the trick suggested in the CD thread of using multiple directories and that seemed to slow down the degeneration process a bit but doesnt stop it. Next Im going to try experimenting with different memory cards. So far I've been using the 32GB card that came with my GD.

SIMONE for the Atari Jaguar CD - Now Available!
captainblack replied to Clint Thompson's topic in Atari Jaguar
Its quite auspicious your first release is a simon says game, as it was the same with Sivak, the guy who went on to create the Battlekid games which are arguably the best NES games ever made. -
Seems like Trevor McFur is considered the hardest. Slightly surprised people are saying Double Dragon 5, not that its easy but I dont think its among the hardest. In terms of technical difficulty I would said Raiden is the hardest, though its so much fun that its easy to get practice. In terms of a game that you are least likely to see the ending probably Cannon Fodder because its hard and very long. The Iron Soldier games are pretty tough too, partially because of the control style.

Good point, UV2 could have been a hit.

JasenCustoms’s Brook Retro Board suggestions

I would buy this. Also its a pretty niche thing so you can probably ask for more than 50. -

Are incomplete prototypes covered by copyright restrictions?
captainblack replied to captainblack's topic in Atari Jaguar
Thanks for the info guys, I suppose that makes sense. -
Hey friends, I was just wondering what the situation is with these unfinished prototypes that pop up and circulate on the internet. They get hosted on encyclopedia style websites which gives me the impression they're not in the same category as a file for a commercially released game. I could be wrong though so I thought Id ask before talking openly about where to find them and such.

Having now tried all the official CD games I thought I should note the compatibility for my unit so far. They pretty much all work partially before they crash besides Primal Rage and BD13 which work fine. Iron Soldier 2 doesnt crash but it does lose sound whenever I smash buildings. My first attempt to fix things was the old alcohol and q-tips scrub and it actually helped a lot. Before Hoverstrike CD would freeze whenever basically anything happened in the game, now it only freezes when I drive up cliffs quickly which I can strategically avoid in most levels. Battlemorph worked perfectly for the 1st level and wow its an amazing game. I froze on the 2nd level when I crashed into a train at high speed. This one seems to be playable as long as you dont get crazy, like in hoverstrike. As imperfect as things are its really amazing to finally play these games, excellent work @SainT ! I will try some of the tricks mentioned in this thread to try and get Battlemorph and Blue Lightning to not crash. Those are the two CD games I'd really love to sink some time into.

Did the Jag have any unlicensed adult games?
captainblack replied to captainblack's topic in Atari Jaguar
You mean like you could convert any video to this format and it works on the GD? Pr0n or otherwise thats pretty amazing if so. Maybe I could put some old 90s VHS tapes on there. Unfortunately Im not old enough to be nostalgic for 90s porn though ? -
The old 2600 was notorious for its adult unlicensed games, and in the 90s all the other consoles seemed to have them(SNES, Sega, 3DO), but Ive yet to hear of any for the Jag. It seems like most of those games were coming from Asia in the 90s though so probably Atari missed out on the chance to have strip Mahjong and the likes.

I ran into some very basic issues that I guess nobody else did because theyre not mentioned, but I will mention them in case there are other noobs reading. When people are talking about pressing the option button when prompted, they mean a screen that flashes for a split second right when you boot up the cart. I never actually could read it I just saw the flicker and assumed thats what it was so I jammed the options buttons at that time. When you do this you get the mentioned QR code, and you may have a phone like mine that doesnt read QR codes well. I tried a few sketchy apps in the app store before finding one that works and reveals the code thats just listed at the bottom. Not sure how this is linked to the firmware update, but what you actually have to do is press the option button again and it takes you to a 2nd screen that has the url that gives the firmware. When typing in the URL note that the zeros are the ones with more pointy inner spaces while the Os are just round. Then I also had the issue others mentioned of CCD not working but its no problem I found some CUE files. Results so far: Baldies boots but freezes when I try to start a game. Highlander worked long enough for me to fight a guy but froze when I tried to go to a hut. Braindead 13 works perfectly. Primal Rage works perfectly, and looks much better than the 32X version. Those smooth animations. It seems harder to do special moves in this version but it might just be the Jagpad. Kinda wish Jag had some more FTGs so I could convince myself to wire up a stick controller.

Finished the Predator campaign, wooo! The trick with this game at least with Predator is that its basically an RPG, where leveling up your weapons and knowing which to use where is the key. Well, that and knowing the maps. For the first level I mapped it all by paper, after that my patience was pretty strained so I used the maps in the magazine guide. It felt a little dirty but not that dirty because Atari endorsed an official guide that had a lot more info than just the maps. Using the claw blade sucks but as soon as you get the spear the game becomes way more fun. One of the best parts of the game was going berserk running around the giant hall spearing marines. I first killed the alien queen with the shoulder cannon but for max honor I went back and did it with the spear. This game definitely gets your heart racing, more than many survival horror games. Its hard to get into when you are learning the mechanics and strats but Im glad I put in the effort. Great experience. I have to say though I feel bad for any kids back in the day who didnt have maps and had to make them all by hand. Levels 4 and 5 are both giant mazes.

I did not. I didnt have to do anything with firmware, it worked right out of the box. Additional info: I tried again after a few hours and the sound worked for about a minute then cut out instead of cutting out as soon as I picked predator. Also I noticed that right before the sound cuts out it will sometimes make a faint high pitch sound as its last dying breath. Not sure if this is relevant but its a PAL Jag and I use an AV cable instead of RF.

Hey guys, today when I was playing AvP I noticed that it worked perfectly when I picked the marine or alien, but when I picked the predator there was no sound, and sometimes there was a graphical issue where the word "pause" when you pause the game is a scrambled mess of pixels. This is strange because this was not happening at all yesterday. I figured maybe if I keep turning it off and back on again it would work, but I did like 10 times and it never fixed it. I am using .j64 format. I originally tried .jag format but I got the red screen. Anyone else having this issue or know of a fix?
-
Hey friends. My initial experience with AvP was that it was like Doom but slow and scary. It was cool but I always preferred the adrenaline rush of Doom. Now I am trying to make myself appreciate the slow tactical style of AvP so I will be making a serious commitment to overcome the fact that I am impatient and suck at this game. In light of this I was wondering what tactics and strategies you folks might have for one trying to git gud. I have heard the marine path is the hardest. Predator is my favorite but I have a hard time killing enemies with him. Based on the movie you would think he could rip guys apart with one slash but instead I usually fidget around stabbing the claw while marines gun me down.

What stores in Canada sold the Jaguar (back in the day)?
captainblack replied to WozzyCat's topic in Atari Jaguar
From what I remember it was indeed when they were clearing them out at the end. If I remember right there was an ad pamphlet listing the Jag for like 80 bucks. -
I initially dismissed Ultra Vortek as an MK clone with bad controls, and I guess thats kinda true but its still a lot of fun. The visuals are great and the characters are cool too. If they had cleaned the controls up a bit so it played like Street Fighter or an SNK game it would have been a 10/10 game.

I vaguely recall hearing Giant Tiger sold them, and I also remember Microplay though when I started going there is was just a bit too late for anything Jaguar. -
I loved I-War, feels like the future.
