  1. It's been a while, so I thought it might be time to check in and get a little interactive :)

I hooked up my 4 Port and enjoyed some good gaming courtesy of Voltman's Happ controller and Cafeman's wonderful Koffi.

After a few rounds, I moved over to some trackball classics and then decided that it was time for a short break.

When I returned, I noticed that the 5200 looked damn good sitting on entertainment rack and started wondering if it was possible to hack the case to accommodate a 360, PS3, or Xbox. I've seen a 5200 hacked as a HTPC, but never with a modern console under the skin.

There were also some great hacks posted here.

Has anyone tried this or checked to see if it was physically possible without destroying the beautiful Atari case?

    Thanks!

  2. I didn't own a 5200 as a kid but my uncle who lived a few doors down bought one and we spent many hours playing games on it. I always liked Countermeasure but haven't played it since way back when.

Will I be sorely disappointed if I pick one up somewhere?

Is it considered a good game?

I realise it's all subjective but wanna get a general idea.

In my opinion, it had some decent gameplay, but I found guessing the code was way too easy. Going after the silos made things more interesting. It was great attempt by Atari, but never felt satisfying.

However, I still play it from time to time because I'm a sucker for tank games :P

  3. Ah the Holy Grail of 5200 joysticks!  I'd love to see a 5200 joystick mod that adds self-centering to the stock joystick.  I worked on one myself, but never came up with a viable mod.  Maybe some reverse engineering of these Atari produced self-centering joysticks is in order.

    Agreed

  4. Sorry, but I had to bring this one back...

Recently, I've been looking at posts regarding the S-Video modification and I'm wondering how much the sound and picture improve.

I know this is not an easy request, but would anyone happen to have before & after pics using the same display and/or sound bites using the same output device?

    Thanks!

  5. What is/are your least favourite title(s) for the 5200?.

I have to say I like most of the games, but several are boring (repetitive and easy) or poorly designed. Here is my list of the bottom feeders:

    Congo Bongo

    Galaxian

    Kangaroo

StarTrek: Strategic Operations Simulator (looks good, but too easy)

    James Bond 007

Any Realsports title (Baseball is kind of interesting with the voice, but it becomes old real fast)

  6. I would highly recommend you do a search on 'Completed Items' on EBay to see the going rate. The price REALLY fluctuates based on the systems that are up for auction during any given week, the condition, accessories, and original box/documentation.

I agree with others opinions regarding 'Untested' systems. You may get lucky, but there is usually something wrong with them. However, it is possible to get a good deal if you need one as a parts machine.

Also, check with some of the members here. You may find someone that is willing to trade or sell you a system that is probably in better condition than many on Ebay.

    That's my 2¢!

  7. However, I don't know if Sinistar would really feel like Sinistar without the screaming, "RUN COWARD!" and, "RRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRR!"  :)

    ..Al

Good point, but doesn't the 5200 have some voice capabilities? I know in Berzerk and RS Baseball, it's there, but the action has to stop. Is there any way around this :?

    Thanks!

  8. Ok, we all know Warlords 5200 Exists but since it's so hoarded, should wejust re-do it? And what about tempest? Should we re-do it too?

You've got my vote on both! ESPECIALLY Warlords because of the unique 1,2,3,4 player aspect It's hard to explain how fun these simple but competitive games can turn out when you get a group of people together. The original still has a really high fun factor and I'm sure would sell. I bet it would even have the side-effect of generating more interest in the 4 Port console.

The Tempest Proto looks great and would kick with collision detection and 5200 paddle compatibility, in addition to working correctly with the standard joysticks. Just add the afore mentioned elements and 'spikes' for an easy homebrew seller.

  9. Sinistar is possible.  The 5200 joysticks are practically ideal for it.  The problem would be the vast number of objects that should be on screen for that one.

The company I work for was going to do a Sinistart port for Pocket PCs and Palms, so we got all kinds of original source code, so my lead engineer knows exactly how the screens are built and abstractred and so forth.  Maybe I should get him to write it.  haha

Now, this sounds interesting!!! PLEASE, use your Dilbert managerial powers for the good of the ATARI Community!!! Since the 5200 can do multiple objects like Robotron and Defender (not to mention Stargate), I'll bet it could work!

I wonder how labor intensive would it be to port it to the 5200? Perhaps a cost analysis is in order? :)

  10. I don't know if the 5200 is powerful enough, but I would love to see a game like I, ROBOT or SINISTAR!

Sinistar exists (or did at one point). That is all I'm authorized to say right now...

    Tepest

Wah000!!!! Please expand on this when you have proper authorization 8)
