  1. Best:

Atari 7800 - That thing looks futuristic without being tacky. Perfet for its era.

    Vectrex

Original Odyssey - It looks cool still and even manages to work in a little bit of woodgrain.

    Worst

ALL of the Nintendo systems! They look sooo cool in Japan, then they went and uglied them up when they made them for the US.

    Intellivision - Yuck

  2. Most adults I know just write my hobby off as me being a goofy person (if they know me). I think they are surprised that someone who is not overweight, does not live in his mom's basement, has good hygene, and has a real job and a hot wife - collects old videogames and systems. That is the sterotype (like the comic book guy on the Simpson's) that we are stuck with.

The folks that seem to actually get it are the kids! My son and his freinds regularly break out the old consoles (all the way back to my pong) and play classics when they take a break from their mind-numbing Xbox marathons. I take my handheld collection to school when I give my presentation on engineering for a career and I also take it to overnighters with the Scout Troop (when we are not camping). I always get comments when I whip out my Lynx at the airpport or somewhere when I am traveling - "Wow, it's so big!", "What can you do with it?!" :)

I agree with everyone else - who cares what others think. I like as hobby where I can actaully play with my junk.

  3. I have both a B&W as well as a Crystal. I never play the B&W. Come to think of it, I don't play the Crystal much either. I like the simple puzzle games since they can be navigated without knowing any Japanese. I got a few a strategy type games and cant get past the opening screen.

If you want a handheld to PLAY - get a Lynx or Neo Geo Pocket Color. Those both rock! If you already have those and want something unique for your collection (like I did), go ahead and get a color/Crystal Wonderswan. They are still pretty cool to own and the prices seem to be only going up.

  4. Looks good!

Do you plan any others in the future?

Any chance of doing a Berzerk?

    Hello Rob,

When this project started nearly two years ago it began with a survey to gauge the "most wished for" overlay. The survey came back with Mine Storm, Pole Position, Star Castle, Protector as the top four. Mine Storm and Pole Position are now finally here. We looked at doing Star Castle and this one had the hardest graphics to reproduce - so we pushed that to the bottom of the list. We thought about doing Protector and we did get permission from Alex Hubert the author of Protector. But then there were concerns raised by some persons who own the limited edition of Protector not wanting to see their prized limited edition collectable loosing value. So instead the next two overlays won't be reproductions but rather new artwork overlays. It all depends on Peteski the other guy in this project, but the next two overlays he has started work on are YASI and Protector. The artwork will be inspired by the orignal arcade video game artwork from Space Invaders and Defender.

Thanks. Those plans sound good too. Appreciate the work and plan to order a set next payday.

  5. These different views are the great thing about collecting. Everyone has a unique way of doing it.

I take the deals as I find them. If a NIB or CIB game is a good deal, I will get it. If a loose cart is a game I want, I will get it.

I have no qualms at all about opening a new box - I want to play the game, not look at it.

I just recently bought a Vectrex and I have found CIB games are a little too pricey for my taste - so I am buying the games loose.

  6. There is anAC adapter for it - but I never use mine. What is the point of an handheld game that plugs into the wall.

I use good quality rechargeble batteries and they seem to last a long time.

    Welcome to the Lynx.

Don't forget Lemmings, Checkered Flag and Chips Challenge !!

  7. I started collecting game systems and games about four years ago. Like everyone else, I have watched the older systems become harder to find and the prices climb. Used to find stuff in garage sales and flea markets, but that seems to have dried up. What really irks me is the sellers on Ebay that seem to be cornering the market on some systems and driving prices to ridiculous levels. Sometimes they seem almost insane! The problem is that other sellers see these silly prices and everything goes up because they think these crooks are experts.

Take the Vectrex for example. I've always wanted one for my collection (and to play with!), but the prices have climbed to the point where I just gave up. There are six systems on Ebay right now ($549, $169.99, $299.99, $399.99, $799.99, and one wingnut who is asking $2,480!). Tack on $20+ for shipping. A couple of years ago, they were on ebay for $40 - $80 pretty regular. Things are just crazy.

Well there is still hope my brothers and sisters! The other day I stopped at a flea market just for grins and like usual, was not finding anything. Then all the way in the back of the building was a Vectrex console under some other boxes. Plugged it in and it worked fine. Guy asked $75, I talked him down to $50 and went home with a nice looking working Vectrex! Score!

Then I looked on Ebay for a new controller for a backup - Holy Cow - $150 for just a controller. Here we go again....

    Minestorm rocks!

  8. The reason he has a lot of stuff is because he want way too much money for it and it doesn't sell.

This guy is crazy - these systems are not worth what he asks.

Shop around, go to craigslist and you can get N64 systems for $20 with several games all day long.

I got a green N64 Donkey Kong edition MIB with everything included for my son for Christmas last year off of ebay for $45. Shop Around and be patient and you won't have to get scalped by people like this.

  9. A friend of mine once said "Don't act surprised when a duck goes quack."

Come on folks, this is Ebay. What do you expect. Buyer beware!

I have been using ebay since 1998 and the days of finding any really good 'deals' are over. Everyone in the world is looking at the same stuff you are so the prices go up. And you also have thousands of people pursuing the American dream making crap in their basement and selling it online. I almost bought a tshirt with a video game logo. I got suspicious because the picture on ebay was only the logo, not of the t-shirt. Then I looked at the guys feedback. Turns out he was copying artwork off the internet and printing it on iron-on transfer paper in his printer and then ironing it on the shirt. Quality was crap and he had a lot of complaints. Pass!

  10. Email the seller. Insist on being able to return the console for a refund of part of the price or provide negative feedback. It should be packed well enough to survive the trip - period!

Crappy packaging is not acceptable. Newspaper alone is not good enough for something electronic like a 3DO. It should have been bubble wrapped and double boxed with peanuts.

Hey - you bought a working unit. You should expect to receive a working unit.

  11. Ebay deals are getting harder to find. You need to be very patient and not get last minute bidding fever. There are also a few guys who are looking to corner the market and offer only outrageous "buy it now" deals. Keep looking.

I have found some good deals on Craigslist, just stay local so you can look it over.

Put out the word to everyone you know. People come up to me from time to time with old systems they want to get rid of and I offer them a fair price. I got my Intellevision and my Genesis with 32x that way.

Our local used game store sells and buys consoles. You won't steal one, but you can talk them to a fair price. Got a brand new Lynx, brand new Dreamcast, used Saturn, used 3DO, and a few Nintendo consoles there and they all work great. Plus, once they knew I was a collector, they call when they get something new (like a new XEGS system still in the box). They only had one and they sold it to me without even putting it on the shelf.

So be patient and spread the word. Before you know it your wife will be complaining about your collection just like mine. Can you believe that she doesn't understand why I need a white AND a black Dreamcast? Hello, they were good deals...

  12. Then after dying in the ductwork, I restored my saved game. Then I noticed I was in the right place with all my ammo and health, but my map was gone, all the doors were closed again and all the stinking aliens were back! Kindof defeats the purpose of saving the game, I think.

    Is this right?

That is right, on the up side IIRC ammo, food and medpacks are also restored and without that I don't think it would be possible to finish the game only weapons and security cards are not restored although locations of aliens/predators and marines are randomely set every restore.

Some may say that effects replayability but as I said without it I think it would be diffcult to finish the game, also the save cart only has so much space and saving the live/dead status and locations of every alien, predator and marine would probabley take up to much space, I am sure it could be done but the extra data may result in say twenty (guess) saves filling the save space and that is not enough espically if you want to keep saves for all three chratacters.

Anyone know of a website with the maps, item locations and walkthroughs for the game. Every search I have done has brought up stuff for the more recent ports.

I know going around is circles when you are lost (epsically in the airducts) is a pain, more so for those of use with motion sickness issues but what is the point of playing the game if your just going to follow a walk through. Ignor walkthroughs and just play it, preferable in a room on your own with the brighness on the set turned down so you can't see as far down the corridors and be afraid, be very afraid.

    be afraid, be very afraid.

    :). :)

It seems like half the times an alien jumps me from behind, I jump in my chair and scramble to turn around. The first time I heard the predator whisper "anytime" and I could't see anything, it actually creeped me out.

  13. For a good walkthrough and complete maps you should have (as all Jag fans should) the Atari Jaguar Official Gamers Guide. You can find them on ebay or Amazon as well as online stores that sell Jaguar merchandise.

I will look for that. Thanks!

  14. For my birthday (47th) my wife and kids got me a NIB Jaguar system with AvP (also NIB). One of the best birthdays ever.

So I got started on AvP. After clearing out several rooms and fleshing out about half the map, I saved the game. Then after dying in the ductwork, I restored my saved game. Then I noticed I was in the right place with all my ammo and health, but my map was gone, all the doors were closed again and all the stinking aliens were back! Kindof defeats the purpose of saving the game, I think.
