Thanks for the feedback. There is another thread about some folks working on an S-video adapter for STs. That would be the answer. Anyone know of that is done or ready?

I think the Jag bashing has really simmered down over the years.
I remember Jag bashing. I even remember Playstation bashing.
If you were just a kid, you had to believe your personal console was the best. Admitting otherwise would be admitting you had wasted serious cash by kid standards (HUNDREDS of dollars). So the kids spent their free time explaining why all other consoles were crap... in gym class, on BBSes, or (especially) on IRC and Usenet.
I guess not all kids grow up.

Nowadays, anyone who is curious can pick up any classic console on eBay for cheap, so what's the point in arguing? Try them all if you feel like it.
It's a bit like the ST vs Amiga thing. When my friends were spending thousands of dollars on their home computer, they were very motivated to analyze, argue, and agonize over every little feature. Nowadays, with people just throwing them away, and free emulators that can replace $10K of (1990) hardware, there's no more emotional investment.

Who is "throwing away" STs?!

I am looking for an ST these days, I would be more than happy to take one you no longer want. I am willing to do it to save the planet and prevent our landfills from filling up. I am just that kind of guy.

Hey folks! An Atari computer noob looking for some feedback.
I have a nice collection of Atari game systems that I like to mess around with (2600, Pong, 7800, Jaguar, Lynx, etc). I recently ran across a NIB XEGS system that I grabbed mainly because I had never seen one and it seemed to be a good deal. I find that I am really enjoying it a lot, too ! Looks like I am hooked and looking to add a floppy to that system.
So I also got to thinking (look out!) that since I have a nice 8 bit system, that a 16 bit computer system might make a nice addition to the collection as well.
After a little (very little) research I am thinking that an ST with built in floppy drive, built in power supply and a RF modulator (520 or 1040 FM) so that I can use the same TVs that I use for my other systems would be the cleanest system to get and use.
What do the experts think? These are not very common on ebay it seems. Are there any sources that you folks know of (like Best Electronics who sold me my 7800 a my NIB Jaguar - wow is he great or what!!)? I am not really looking to steal one, just get something that I won't have to fart around with too much and not get ripped off.
I also noticed that the systems tend to be loose with no software. How available is the OS?
Thanks for any help. I am really looking forward to getting back to Space Quest, Gato, and GEM. What memories!
Keep playing and keep it alive

I am looking to add an ST to my Atari gaming collection. I am having trouble finding one with RF which I need since I want to display on a TV with my other game consoles. This looks like a great idea that would fill the bill.
I really enjoyed the thread so far. It is like a soap opera - I can't wait to see how it turns out!

PS It has been a whole month - Any update?

I love MAME. I only emulate arcade games. Other systems are better emulated on other targeted programs. I'm no computer genius and I figured it out.
Complaining about free software is kind of silly. You get what you pay for and how much time you are willing to dedicate.
On the contrary, you get a lot more than you pay for with Mame!
So true

Thanks again for the reviews. They are very helpful. Last night I spent a couple hours playing ChuChuRocket and had a blast. I would not have given the game a second glance without your review.

The Atari XEGS is the best of both worlds. It is an 8 bit computer and a game console with some awesome arcade ports.
I don't know if it was available down under.

Gee, when did the AVGN become the voice of the classic gaming community? I say play what you dig, and if some foul-mouthed goofball who is obsessed with poop jokes does't like it - too bad. I like the Sega add ons. They are a neat part of video game history and are fun to mess around with!
Play On !

I use an emulator on my Dingoo that works really well for Lynx games. It works with the OS that comes with the Dingoo. Just drag and drop the program and the game ROMs. Couldn't be easier!

If Nintendo backed the Lynx it would have seen the same, if not better success than the original Gameboy did. The Juggernaut that is Nintendo could sell a ketchup popcicle to a woman in white gloves.
Virtual Boy?
The descision to release it in the condition it was in at the time was made by a faction opposed to it's creator who wanted to disgrace him. They succeeded. Had they let him continue until he got the thing right, it would have become that timeline's Game Boy Advance.
Even with the memory model problems, the Lynx was in a far more production ready state. And being based on the 6502, it would have been far easier to port Famicom/NES titles to than the Game Boy.
Have you ever played the Virtual Boy? Any game that makes players nauseous has no future. And the red display was like looking into the pits of hell. How long should they have allowed him to continue? Five more years of tweaking would not have made that thing a success. It was a prime example of a project that should have been stopped at some point and never seen production.

The NeoGeo Pocket would have done to the Nintendo 'Lynx' what the Gameboy did to Atari Lynx.
No matter how much I like the Lynx, I admit it was HUGE - the thing was a weapon. And it ate batteries the way that Rosie ODonnel eats HoHos. Remember they didn't have the rechargeables that they have today, parents would have said 'no way' once they learned that they would be buying six AAs every four hours.
The way the story goes, sme guys flew to Japan and showed the Handy to Nintendo. The Nintendo guys showed them the Gameboy prototype and then sent them packing.

Wow
I click on this thread to read about video games and find a political discussion.

I recently purchased an Intellivision with about 40 loose game carts. The only problem is they did not come with the overlays. Is there a source out there for orphaned overlays? Can't hurt to ask...

I asked my 16 yr old son. He said not to use 'geek' because geeks were the kids that played dungeons and dragons in the corner of the cafeteria and everyone ignored them.
That is teenagers, for you - what do they know. For grownups, geeks grow up, get a degree, get good jobs and marry hot women (because they have good jobs and the women didn't know them in high school) and they are proud to be geeks.
I bought my wife a shirt that says "I love my geek".
Hello, my name is Catsmasher and I am a geek.

Yes please
Love the Zombie games!

Wow!
Lot's of great feedback.
That is more information than I was able to get after three days of surfing the web.
Thanks a lot. I look forward to playing on the system and learning about it.
I just bought Robotron2084 off of ebay. It is one of my favorite arcade games.
Unfortunately I have been out of town since I bought it

But my son tells me it works well.
hope you got the joystick holder for robotron, makes the game so much better using 2 joysticks imo
Yes I did. The game is new in the box with the holder. I will probably use it as a pattern to build a wooden holder so I don't tear up the box.

I will say, though, that I get less of headache reading posts here than other places around the web. I guess that shouldn't be a shock, being that this is, inherently, a forum of nerdy-types :-p
Who you calling a "Nerd"!
Yeah, buddy, Repect the Nerd!
I prefer "Geek"

I was going by memory. I think I can buy "olive tinge" as a valid description.
I was expecting typical grey, the olive tinge took me by surprise. But there IS an olive tinge.

I just got an XEGS today. It is NIB and doesn't appear to have ever been unpacked. The color is uniform all over and I am assuming it has not changed - it sure as heck looks brand new.
Anyway, it is not grey at all. It is more of a light olive green. And of course the buttons look like Easter eggs. Overall a big departure from my other Atari games which look like they were designed by someone with a crush on Darth Vader.
Maybe you could clue me in on the best games for it. I will probably try to get a disk drive eventually.

One of my peeves is when people say "mute point". When they mean "moot point".
As in: The topic of this thread seems to have become a moot point.

Hit Craigslist this morning and this afternoon I scored a Black Sega Dreamcast (Sports Edition). Console and controller are like new condition. All in the original box with all the disks, papers, etc. Only one of the game disks was opened and the black memory unit had never been out of the box. Also got two other games (quake 3 and silent scope), two controller extension cords and a seperate aftermarket controller. All for $25.
I don't get lucky like that too often, so I thought I would brag a bit.
