  1. Despite the fact that this 10 year old thread has generated new discussion, it certainly hasn't aged well. At the time I started this thread, yes I was hardcore into playing on original hardware cuz the alternative at the time was playing emulation on my laptop with some USB controller. Three years before Raspberry Pi came out and I have no idea when Retropie was released. My opinion now is this thread sucks donkey dinks and should be deleted. The horror. The horror.
  2. I know I do. For me the classic era starts with Pong consoles and ends with the Atari 5200/ColecoVision/Vectrex. To each their own I guess.
  3. Pretty much. I spent a lot of money on home brews over the last 10 years. Some games were better than others. I haven't kept financial records on everything I bought and sold but my hunch is I at least broke even. In my case, I no longer have to be held hostage by pre-orders. I would still entertain buying home brew ROMs though if they were made available.
  4. Downloading the full sets doesn't bother me. That stuff is there in the event I want to discover a game in the future. There are some platforms where I only downloaded games I'm familiar with though so I don't have complete sets of every platform on my Pi. One more thing on nostalgia - my wife and I played Combat and two player Space Invaders 2600 emulated last night and I did get nostalgic because those were the first two games I had the night I got my 2600 back in 1980. So nostalgia is possible at least for me through emulation.
  5. Yes the nostalgia of playing on real hardware has worn off. Now I'm at the point in my life where I'm overwhelmed by stuff I've accumulated and I want to simplify. Sure everything I have is neatly organized on shelves and out of the way, but it's also stuff that doesn't get any attention which to me seems pointless to hold on to it. I don't want my house to be a museum. Raspberry Pi and SD card cost me less than $100 and as you say I can sit my fat ass on the couch and go through thousands of games through emulation station without having to burn any calories.

Yeah I was being sarcastic in that forum post. CAGDC has been a ghost town for a long time. Only a few CAG tournaments a year anymore. It's too bad really it was fun while it lasted.

Sorry to be dense but what's CAG?

  7. No Donkey Kong. I found it searching for SNES home brews. I vaguely remember this being posted a few years ago.
  8. Downloaded the PC Engine set for my Retropie last night and playing these games for the first time. Played Galaga, Raiden and 1943 so far. Games look impressive. Recommend me some games to explore. I prefer games that are easy to understand and preferably shooters.
  9. I actually found Donkey Kong for the SNES last night. Looks pretty kewl.
  10. LOL at that site BRB posting MAME scores using a photograph as evidence
  11. I'm pretty sure there were high score tables that didn't have initials. And then there were games that kept track of the high score at the top of the screen but didn't have a table. Asteroids was released in 1979 and had a table to enter initials.
  12. What's the big deal about posting the link here to the ROM download, jeez...a search takes you to Reddit with a link to Archive.org Anyway, my son and I played it last night and we quit cuz we got stuck. We went down a pipe and there's a room with a bunch of coins and two walls on either side and one has to jump on top of the other to get to the upper block to collect the coins and then we couldn't figure out how to get out. My son thought you had to do wall jumps and go upward but it was so laborious we said fuck it let's watch The Matrix instead. It's OK though. It fixes the one thing I couldn't stand about the original Super Mario Bros was Luigi would just have to sit there and do nothing the whole time Mario was on a run. Boring. BTW: are there any other home brews for the SNES and NES that I might have overlooked where the ROMs are available for download? I haven't kept up with the scene at all.
  13. I have Atari 7800 w/ controllers and over 20 games this week up for auction

  14. Bump for auctions ending Saturday. I'll have more stuff up Saturday afternoon Eastern time.
  15. I owned a Missile Command a few years ago. I could never break 40K though even with the spray n pray strategy.
  16. Phoenix doesn't have wireless controllers so that was a deal breaker for me.
  17. 10 year old thread comes back to haunt me... I would still pick the ColecoVision if emulation didn't exist. But since emulation does exist, my opinion is now why bother with console gaming.
  18. This. To me the classics of the 70s and early 80s are where it's at.
  19. I think I might have two of those. PM incoming.
  20. Bump for this week's auctions. See post #1.
  21. Bump for auctions ending Saturday. I'll have more shit up in the afternoon Eastern time.
  22. Knock yourself out. For that price I've been able to get a playable EM that I'm not embarrassed to invite my friends over for beer and pinball.
