First time beating Waku Waku 7. I’m not good yet. But here’s my high score for now.

Well done!  Fernandez/Fernandeath is one cheap SOB.  I hope to get my MVS running again soon and play this again!  Arina is definitely the best character.

  2. I don't THINK I did this one, so..

    RIP OFF (1980, Cinematronics/Tim Skelly)

B&W vector game in which you simply try to prevent thieves from stealing your pile of triangles at the center of the screen.  Each wave of enemies gets faster and more agile, and shoots at you more often.  You have unlimited lives but when all the triangles are stolen it's game over.  Very simple game courtesy of the late Tim Skelly.  I may have first seen this at a pizza place in town-- perhaps a Rico's Red Lion Pizza (now Round Table).  2 player co-op option.

Wayne Newton Poker & Blackjack! 😜 As card games go, this is one was pretty fun. If nothing else, it at least had personality, and arguably the best presentation of any of its console contemporaries.

When he wins, he says "Danke Schoen"!

  4. Hey Sega CD-philes!

Trying my hand at the rather frustrating (at this point) ETERNAL CHAMPIONS: CHALLENGE FROM THE DARK SIDE for the Sega CD, via emulator Kega Fusion version 3.64.  I have used its controller options in the emulator to try to map the A, B and C buttons (which are the default light, medium and strong kicks) to the keys A, S and D; and map the X, Y and Z buttons (in the event of a 6-button Sega pad), which are the light, medium and strong punches, to the keys Q, W and E.  I can't for the life of me get the punch keys set up to work.  The default way to use them is to press the MODE button to switch between the kick and punch buttons, and that is absolutely annoying.  There is a screen for CONTROLLER SETUP but I can't seem to really do anything here to help me.  If anyone can give me any hints on setting up the controllers to my liking, I would really appreciate it!  Thank you in advance!

Again, I call the Gong Show bullsh*t!!!!!* Never happened. It's a collective hallucination due to fluoride in the water, which they'd been increasing in the time period. Prove me wrong.

*I may have never called the Gong Show this before.

It definitely feels like an LSD-induced dream.  But if want to believe that never happened, you'd REALLY want to purge this from your memory banks:

  6. DEFENDER

Wow, I guess there are some neat tricks to pull off with this one.  You can fry at either the attract mode or after starting a game.  If you fry and make the city buildings go wonky there are all sorts of different effects that may happen-- most notably, your score may be way higher!  Also, you may have possibly infinite lives, start with different enemies or begin on the "mutant wave".  Hard to get this to work right or keep the frying from crashing the game, but well worth trying.

  7. Happy Anniversary to the great NEO GEO thread!

And thank you Anthony for the massively cool NEO GEO sign to put on my NEO GEO cabinet (in the background)!

Would have fashioned together a celebratory video if I had time-- I will have to do that for the 10th anniversary.

    Cheers!

You would be surprised at what Masami Ōbari did outside of Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer.

    -The Fatal Fury OVAs.

-The Battle Arena Toshinden OVAs. (The ones that had Apollo Smile, Lisa Ortiz, and Ted Lewis in the dub.)

    -Detonator Orgun.

He worked on the first anime that got me interested in Japanese animation: DANGAIOH.  It still has brilliant colors and animation (especially for the 80s), and the "fanservice" aspect isn't as overdone as in other anime.

Space Invaders - Frying is how I used to pull off this double-shot trick bitd, and was one of the few frying tricks I ever knew.  I had no idea it was possible to get the same effect by holding down reset and now I'll have to try it!  In any case, I thought it worth mentioning since this can be done by frying.

Oh, I see.  Yeah I had no idea you could pull it off with frying-- I'd never even heard of frying until recent years.  I did know about the reset trick for double shots back then.  What a lifesaver of a trick!

Didn't see Asteroids mentioned yet. It was fairly easy to fry it such that all the Asteroids were white instead of multi colored.

I tried it a few times; I guess I didn't find it all that interesting.  All I remember getting to work was a different position for your ship to start in when you begin your game, if you fry while starting your game.  Maybe I should check it out again.

    Another frying trick I discovered:

    VENTURE (Coleco, 1982)

Frying may cause the screen to go mostly black with perhaps a bit of wonky graphics and sound.  If so, hit the game reset switch.  If it works, the game will be a good deal easier, at least for as long as it's playable (see later).  Some monsters-- dungeon and hallway monsters-- will be frozen in place.  And some will go through walls!  Also note that some dungeon exits will be against a wall and you will either not be able to enter that way or if you try to exit that way you'll get stuck in the wall.  Definitely worth trying though!

    large.1335332821_Venture(1982)(Coleco)_1.png.c87721c830a15da5f45a14224bdedf18.pnglarge.961307792_Venture(1982)(Coleco).png.4115a52519737ba5803a85326ce5aa21.png

Update: You will be unable to play the 2nd level unfortunately, since the edges of the screen are drawn inward to block off both ends of the "spider dungeon" and you are stuck below it.

Ah, this is from the game variations where two players alternate controlling the ship.  You can swap controllers when the ship's color changes to keep control, though that's awkward.

Nuts-- I went into Controller Input in Stella and tried to set up both "controller ports" to use the same inputs, but it won't work.  So I can't just use the same controls when the game switches me to the other player.  It is indeed very awkward to switch to another control setup during your game.  And every time I fry to prevent enemies from firing it's the "swap players" setting.  Boo!

  13. TENNIS

At the beginning screen (the ball bouncing by your player) fry until you see the ball bouncing really slow.  Serve it, and now you will have a much slower game.  If you get lucky another effect is the computer opponent won't move at all!
